Eily’s Report – 25th November

Dia is Mhuire diobh go léir a Cáirde and welcome to my Report

The frosty mornings of  last week put a new face on everything.  The silvery tinge on the autumn colours created a fleeting scene that was worth looking at. As the morning sun malted to icy cover away there was an array of colours all blending in ways that are seldom seen. My little wren didn’t miss a moment of it, again beating all the other birds of the woods to the top of the morning.  Nature has so many things to be enjoyed. When I was a child, people rarely took stock of what was around them. Maybe it was because they were so immersed in making a living that they seldom saw the woods for the trees. You’d never hear those coming in for the dinner in the middle of the day saying that the wild flowers looked lovely in the fields or that the primroses and buttercups were a scene not to be overlooked. I think that there were too many other features in nature occupy their minds. How the stalks in the potato fields were doing  as well as  the corn and hayfields. There was little emphasis on the things that did not make money.  The main aim was to grow your own food and make enough money to pay your way. Our thinking has changed with the passing years. Thanks to the help of modern machinery and methods work in the land is less laborious and time consuming and has led us to a new way of looking at Nature. More time to enjoy the beauty of our flowers and fauna and even find ways of nurturing it.

The morning Mass on Monday of last week was very special. It being the Feast Day of the Presentation of Our Blessed Lady, the pupils of our Presentation Convent School attended.  Children in turn read the story of the foundress of the Pres. order of Nuns, the great Nano Nagle and when Mass was over they went along to our nuns graveyard at the back of the church and laid a wreath as a mark of Respect. Our Parish Choir came in for a very special word of praise from our celebrant, Fr. Jim Kenneally at last Sundays 11.30 Mass. They attended a Choral event at the Cathedral in Killarney the previous week.

We are full of things to be happy about and to relish this week. The giving of our people has surpassed all, with Coleman’s Dyno Day for Timmy reaching  €75.000 already and Sean Radley fast approaching €12.000 for his Museum and Website.  Enough to put everybody in a celebrating mood for the Turning on of the Christmas lights at the end of the week, the last day of the month,  on Sunday November 30th. Already the town is taking on the look, as the tall green tree lords over Mary Hickie’s domain and the giant Snowman and Teddy bear have taken up their normal place in our Town Square. All over town the Spirit of Christmas is the order of the day. Our Mna na hEireann, Niamh Twomey, Noreen Twomey and Catherine Murphy/Pomeroy have put their shoulders to the wheel again and with the help of the many young men they will make November 30th a just opening of our Christmas Season. They want everybody to be part of the scene.  Dress up in Festive gear, plenty of colour. Those with any sort of transport, be it a bike or a tractor or car, or whatever dress it up in Christmas fare and assemble at Dairygold Stores at 5.30 for the grand entrance and the biggest night in town.  The Turning on of the Christmas Lights. Don’t miss it.  Be there, be part of it all.   I  am confident that our caring Garda force will be there as always to see that everything goes in a joyful but an accident free way. Make it a fun start to our Christmas Season.

The organisers want you to know that they use LED bulbs in all of their lights.
