Oh dear, I don’t have a lot of news for you this week. Whatever I have is hearsay, because I wasn’t out very much to attend the local happenings. I got a bug which left me ill for over a week. It was an unusual sort of bug, strange, and I was a little concerned until I heard of others having the same symptoms. Cramps in the stomach. Not your usual pain in the belly but painful cramps and a feeling of sickness. No appetite for food and no tolerance of it except something light and soothing. The family wanted me to see a doctor, but I chose to wait, go to bed and take rest. Take light food, I had to because any thing heavy hurt inside. T.G. I’m the type who bounces back. But I want to let others know how I was ,because it was such a comfort to me when I heard that others had the same symptoms. The old adage that there is safety in numbers works in many ways and we can all fit it into our own case when it suits us.
For those who can nothing beats being out among the people. In being confined to the house it’s very hard to find aways to pass the time. I don’t follow sport and Quiz programs like the Chase etc. are barely tolerable. You can only watch those repeated tv shows so many times. Blind yourself trying the read subtitles and never get to see the show itself because you don’t have the time to watch it when trying to read the subtitle. And with my dyslexia, forget it. While we are interested in other people’s lives, the six o’clock or any news bulletin is a no no for anybody who is living alone. If you’re worried as a result ,there is nobody to change to subject, to talk about something more cheerful. At my time of life, I have no say nor power over the way the world is run, so there is no point in I making my life a misery ,thinking about it. I pray about it all the time, but beyond that no. It’s great to be out among the people. A stranger is just a friend that you haven’t met until now.
My lawn has just been mown, shaved, and the sun is shining. Just got a couple of new plants put in the ground , so there are lots to be happy about and more importantly further afield the silage is being harvested at a great rate and land which could not be tilled because of all the rain are now sporting green carpets of lust green meadows. Buíochas le Dia. But all’s not well in the garden all of the time. There are times when desperate measures have to be taken to stamp out a nagging problem. Up to now this year I wasn’t able to sit out on my patio. The ants, pissamirs had taken over and were ready to attack anybody who dared invade their territory. They could swarm up your leg and take a sting faster than lightening and leave you searching for the anti-histamine or what ever ,but still the pain would persist. Anyway Nora came armed with a box of cocoa-like powder called Nippin ant killer. She mixed it with some dry sand to make it go further and spread it into every nook and cranny. In no time at all it put an end to my problem and now for the first time this season my patio can be enjoyed. The long spell of dry beautiful weather and the air is full of fluffy debris riding on the breeze, and lots of people are complaining of hay fever. I wonder is there a connection. Needless to say a drop of rain would be no harm, but everybody is afraid to even utter the word.
Anyway I’m told that the Darkness into Light five km walk was very well supported. A fine crowd turned out for the dawn of another beautiful day for all the many good reasons which it was held for. Those who took part enjoyed welcome refreshments which were sponsored by the businesses of the town at Millstreet Fire & Safety store on the Main Street. Well done to all concerned.
I missed the beautiful spectacle, the First Holy Communion Mass. I’m always taken by the sight of all the perfect little angels in their virgin white frocks and veils, the special prayers by the priest and the Choir the whole package that is First Holy Communion Day. And this year it was blessed by fine weather. T.G. Next day the parents took over the GAA/Community Hall and held a gala party in their honour. This was a great example of Community co-operation on the day. When the new communicants enjoyed the goodies until two o’clock and were replaced in quick succession by our Active Retired Club who staged their Annual Bealtaine Tea Dance. The transition between the young and the not-so –young went off with wonderful precision. Club members from Baile mhuirne, Boherbue, Castlemagner, Clondrohid, Carriginma, Muinefluich, Donoughmore, Dromtariffe, Inniscarra, Kanturk Oven/Farran,and Tooreencahil came to celebrate. Beautiful refreshments were supplied by popular Kall & Dynne. And with music by Lee Sound they danced to evening away in a wonderful atmosphere of friendship and neighbourliness. In these difficult times with our town at a loss for a Hotel or Hall the great efforts of our Club has to be commended. They did us proud. So hats off to our Mná Na hÉireann and all who helped, for a wonderful undertaking in difficult circumstances.
I want to wish God’s Blessing on my own little great grand daughter Olivia Forde who will receive her First Holy Communion in Cork this Friday. We will all be there to wish her well and cheer her up in the wake of her little sister who went to Heaven last November.
