Eily’s Report – 11th March

  1. Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my report.

Everybody has one and I suppose it’s my turn to have one too, even if I didn’t want it. When the common cold is doing the rounds it’s not easy to hide from it. So I’m sitting beside a very large box of tissues and mopping away ’till I run out of bodily fluids and then perhaps I’ll get a little respite. Flu jabs do nothing for the common cold, it’s a lad all of it’s own and the plan is to give it time and  soon all will be well again.  le cúnamh Dé.  Five years ago we had worse trouble when we were told that the illness that we felt was Covid 19. A new name in the medical world and we would do well to cast our minds back to the devastation that it led to and it will make the common cold seem like a dawdle.

St. Patrick is coming  in a fierce rush this year away ahead of time.  He was honoured by the people of Rathmore last Sunday and next Sunday,  the 16th the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held in Carriganima, followed by our own on Monday March 17 the real feast day of our Patron Saint. Sunday was a beautiful day and the Millstreet Vintage Club held a wonderful run in aid of our local St. Vincent de Paul and everybody came out to help.  As people left the Church after 11.30 our Pipe band members were getting ready to play the Vintage Run out of  town, before rushing to Rathmore to take part in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade there. The brilliant sunshine reigned down on all the events, which made it so much more enjoyable for all. We wish the people of Carriganima similar weather for their parade on next Saturday. They pull out all the stops, the rural atmosphere adding to the fun. The main parade starts from the Glountane road, where no exhibit is too big ,but nearer the finishing point from the church gate to be precise.  They have a section for smallies, which attracts more attention than the others. Little ones can bring their multicoloured mini bikes and lorries and tractors etc. and drive to the finish line as good as the adults. There will be music galore to follow. And the good news is that Seanie has booked people like TR Dallas and more for your Summer entertainment. The Yanks Chipper on site to feed the hungry revellers. So watch that spot.

At home it’s all happening in our own town on Bank Holiday Monday March 17th and while our Taoiseach Micheál Martin is doing his best for us in the Big Apple our Community Council is leaving no stone unturned here to make our St.Patrick’s Day Parade  our best. The amount of co-operation is heart warming and please give them your very best support .  Starting out as usual from Noel C’s carpark, Station Rd. Reviewing stand in the Town Square will have live music in the run up to the five o clock start.  There will be prizes for the best in each category.  Look up our website for all the details. So get out there and celebrate  and TG we have a lot to celebrate.

A note from John Randals summing up the work that has been done by the Tidy Towns. Thanking the many people who helped along the way to keep Millstreet looking good in 2024 spite of wind and weather. He extolled the fact that the footpath all the way to  Coole Cross has been completed and what an asset it will be to those who can now walk safely all the way from our Killarney Road to Coole Cross. A footpath from the Town to Tubrid well has been requested for a very long time and we hope that it too will become  a reality some day. Litter still remains  a problem and due to the unsightly state of Liscahane Road, The Black Shed Road and the Macroom road into town. This in itself is a popular circle for walkers  and the  plan is to clean up these areas on Saturday March 22nd. Meeting in the town Square where pickers will be supplied with all the requirements. But at the end of the day please do not throw your litter around, for others to pick it up.

Our Church was crowded to capacity on Sunday last when our young people who are about to be confirmed on the 9th April and their parents attended. Some read the prayers of the Faithful and at the end each one was called to the alter where they were given a lovely wooden cross by the Canon John.

Another season of the Weigh In fundraiser in Cullen came to a close last night. It was a night of fun and celebration as people rejoiced at shedding of those extra pounds and the handing over of the proceeds for a very good cause. 355 lbs was lost over the six weeks and  €5,615.00  collected with a lot more to be added when all the cards have been returned. So well done again to the Cullen and District Special Needs Association. They started many years ago with a large number of both men and women on their list. But sadly many of their beloved helpers passed away with the passage of time. But the few who remain refused to give up and as God helps those who help themselves they continue to be supported every time by the wider community and long may they continue.

Well done to those who lost the most  weight.  Andrias O’Sullivan, 2.5 stone. Joint ladies Mairead O’Sullivan, and Maeve O’Sullivan 1 stone three pounds each. Most money was collected by Mary O’Mahony, €350.
