Listen above to the latest Regional Report – from C103

To begin – We’re delighted to report that Eily Buckley (for whom I’m presently deputising) is recovering splendidly from her recent knee replacement procedure and wishes to extend her deep appreciation for the many supportive messages which she has been receiving.   And very special thanks to Poet supreme, Francis Duggan in Australia for his dedicated to Eily poem entitled “The Female Voice of Millstreet”. We shall keep you updated regarding Eily’s swift recovery to excellent health.

Millstreet International Annual Horse Show at exquisite Green Glens Arena was truly magical and hugely successful with some of the best weather of this Summer.  The live internet broadcast going worldwide through “Clip My Horse TV” was magnificent transmitting many hours of equestrian happenings on a daily basis with marvellous commentary and tremendous uplifting comments about the overall Millstreet atmosphere.  And, of course, a further major equestrian two-day event – the Millstreet International Horse Trials – takes place on 29th and 30th August.   It was Billy Twomey for Ireland on “Ardcolum Duke” who won the prestigious Grand Prix Championship on Sunday.  At one point during Show Week Press Officer supreme, Tadhg Ryan, arranged to feature a 1986 Millstreet Show video on the gigantic outdoor screen.  What a surprise I got when I could hear my own voice echoing through the Arena.  I had in fact done the commentary on that very same video in 1986 and never expected to be viewing with many others between competitions some nineteen years later!  Memories recorded for posterity.

Great credit is due to Millstreet Tidy Towns regarding the many new floral arrangements throughout the town this Summer.   Show visitors were vastly impressed.

Millstreet Pipe Band will this weekend be playing at both the Millstreet Pádraig Pearse Commemoration and Béal na mBláth annual Commemoration having participated at the 56th Rose of Tralee Festival Parade last Saturday night.

Pádraig Pearse’s historic visit to Millstreet in 1915 is to be commemorated on this coming Saturday, 22nd August at 7.30pm.  A plaque will be unveiled at Corkery’s Bar, West End during a full commemoration ceremony at which the Guest Speaker will be the very well known Tom Meaney. The wonderfully dedicated Millstreet Monument Committee has been doing Trojan work preparing for this hugely historic event which is likely to attract an enormous attendance.   Fáilte roimh chách – Everyone is most welcome!  Look out for full details on millstreet.ie and observe the truly historic original Poster from 1915 kindly made available by Jerry Lehane and the marvellous Coordinating Committee.  And now also we have the very impressive official advertising Poster supported by IRD Duhallow.  This very special event marks the beginning of National Heritage Week in Duhallow.

And on the very same night, Saturday 22nd August we are reminded by Nigel that the renowned “Crystal Swing” will be appearing at the Wallis Arms Hotel.   Our very best wishes to Dervla Burke of “Crystal Swing” on her recent marriage to Tim O’Connor in East Cork last Saturday.

And we’ve also now discovered a Millstreet link with the renowned Thomas Kent for whom there is to be a State Funeral on 18th September 2015.   Eileen Noonan originally from The Square, Millstreet is married to Éamonn Walsh who is very well known in his marvellous work for many praiseworthy charities through his Vintage Machinery hobby.   Éamonn is a grandnephew of Thomas Kent.

I met with Eileen at Springfort Hall Hotel last Sunday where the marvellous Golden Jubilee of Sr. Mary Lucey of her Profession as a Presentation Sister was being superbly celebrated with Mass, a meal, lots of photographs and splendid memories recalled.  Sr. Mary of Rathcoole and Millstreet has spent many years of dedication as a Teacher in Ireland and on the Missions abroad.

Artist supreme, Brian O’Leary is presently creating a new mural outside the Gym at the entrance to Millstreet Town Park.   The original mural dedicated to the late Aidan Burke has been much admired since 2003.  Brian’s new creation in memory of Aidan is also developing into a magnificent work of art where sun, sky, colour and prayerful words are forming such a noble tribute.   The new Gym will be officially opened on Monday, 31st August with excellent Coordinator of the renovated centre – Denise Neenan.

What mighty successes were achieved in this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Sligo which again have Millstreet connections.   Sincere congrats. to James Linehan of Millstreet CCÉ Branch who finished second in the U18 Bodhrán; to Patrick O’Callaghan, whose U18 Mixed Set came away with top honours (dancing with Kilcummin CCÉ) and in the Bannaí Céilí / Céili Band (O18) it was the hugely impressive Shandrum Céilí Band, CCÉ, Craobh Chronáin, Corcaigh with Millstreet’s Tadhg Ó Súilleabháin and other Duhallow musicians (who have often played in Millstreet) that won the prestigious honour of being selected as the All-Ireland Céilí Band  of 2015.  Rarely have I seen such happy live television as when the Band were featured on TG4’s “Fleadh TV”on Sunday night playing a rousing selection  having only just won the All-Ireland.  And our very best wishes also to the many others from the area who were very successful at this year’s Fleadh.  Lots more details of these great successes on www.millstreet.ie .

“John Casey’s stamp-and-ink shop is a throwback to a simpler era, without computers and sky-high prices. Here’s how it has beaten the odds in a high-rent neighbourhood (in New York).” Thus begins a highly prestigious article (which we shall be linking to www.millstreet.ie ) in the recently published “The Guardian” newspaper.  John C. Casey is originally from Drishane Road, Millstreet.   We congratulate John on such highly regarded news focus.  And thanks to Geraldine (nee Buckley) Dunne for alerting us to the hugely interesting article.
