Cork 20 Rally

The Cork 20 Rally which was on last weekend was scheduled to have four stages in the Millstreet area on Sunday morning. Unfortunately the early morning start on Mullaghanish (6:30) was densely fogged with heavy rain, and with driving conditions deemed too dangerous, the first two stages around Millstreet were cancelled 🙁 but the second two Stage 9 & Stage 10 (repeats of the first two stages) were run later in the momrning.

However, there were some Millstreet competitors with Liam Moynihan co-driving with Garry Jennings finishing in third position overall in their Mitsubishi Evo 9:

from RallySportLive: “Driving conditions were made very treacherous by darkness and dense fog during the opening leg, but Garry Jennings and Liam Moynihan put in a great performance in their Group N Mitsubishi Lancer.

Jennings/Moynihan led the rally at the overnight halt, with Daragh O’Riordan and Tony McDaid two seconds adrift while Tim McNulty and Paul Kiely were third. When the action resumed on day two, the battle for both overall and Group N honours was intense.

Netting third overall, Garry Jennings’ and Liam Moynihan’s excellent drive saw them take the 2011 Production category honours after a very close battle with Alan Ring and Adrian Deasy.”

In the historics, Denis Moynihan & Dan Moynihan were the winners by a country mile in their Ford Escort. Kevin Hickey & Derry Healy were also in the historics in their Ford Escort, but unfortunately failed to finish. [update on Kevin and Derry, the car overheated on route to stage one, and they were unable to rejoin, in there cases, there is a Sunday run open to all competitors that were in this situation, thankfully Kevin and Derry put in a storming performance and won this class in an historic mk1 escort.]

Video: There are three videos below, two from the stages around Millstreet, and another with Liam Moynihan:

Stage 9 – Mullaghanish to near carriganima, and back to the finish out near clondrohid – with Brian O’Mahony & John Higgins

Stage 10 – with Joseph McGonigle & Aidan Friel – Around Mushera – Starts at Knocknakilla, down to Cloghoulabeg, heads towards Aubane but comes out near St.Johns Well, across Mushera, up the Butter Road to Dan Joe Keeffe’s, and finally along the back of Mushera to Ballinagree.

It’s interesting to listen to Liam Moynihan’s co-driving style, which you can hear in the video below which is from the “Molls Gap” stage at the Rally of the Lakes 2011.
