Down in Millstreet

… a few hardy Down souls are determined to fly their county’s flag in Cork.
Millstreet Community School’s John Magee is intensely proud of his Mourne Mountains roots and will be cheering on Down despite his admission that he loves living in north Cork.
“They are quietly confident of a Cork victory, but I think Down will hold a surprise up their sleeve,” he said.
And despite the fact that Millstreet, Charleville, Kanturk and Newmarket are a sea of Cork flags, he has proudly adorned his car and home in the Down colours.
“It’s all in good nature,” he said…

Liz Lyons – Books

A love for books like the Famous Five, BFG and Fantastic Mr Fox set Cork author Liz Lyons on a road that has seen her write two hugely successful novels. From Kilcorney in North Cork but exiled to Ardcath on the Meath/Dublin border, Liz always had an interest in reading and books, she didn’t discriminate and would read “anything I could get my hands on”. Naturally it was at English that she excelled at the Community School in Millstreet.

This led her to study English and History at Trinity College in Dublin (TCD), but it would be a while before she tried her hand at writing.

“I initially thought that I might end up teaching,” she recalled. “But I soon found out that I didn’t have the temperament for teaching, I just don’t have the patience.” When Liz graduated from TCD it was into book selling she went and found herself staying at it for ten years. “It was ideal for me. I was near books all the time, I was like a kid in a sweet shop and everyday I was getting more treats. [read more …] “Liz Lyons – Books”

September Newsletter from the Secret Garden

September and October are busy months, so there’s quite a bit to get through in this newsletter!

We have now taken delivery of our bulb collection for this autumn – loose top-size daffodil bulbs, tulips, dwarf daffodils, snowdrops, alliums, hyacinths for indoor preparation amongst others. There are bulbs for meadows, pots and rockeries – a bulb for any situation!  There are some lovely little gift items for under €5 including the bulb planter with bulbs inside.

There is a lot of confusion as to when you should plant bulbs – for your daffodils and snowdrops, you want to get them in as soon as possible. For tulips, although now is a good time to buy before all the best varieties sell out, the ideal thing is to hold on to them until November and plant them then. The golden rule of planting is plant the bulb at least 2 – 3 times the depth of the bulb, and if you’re not sure which way is up plant on its side – it’ll find its way up!

Regional Report 1030 – 14th September 2010

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1030 from Millstreet

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this wet and soft Autumn  morning.

We got a great psychological boost here this past week when an Australian film company came to make a documentary on the history of the EuroVision Song Contest and the places that hosted it. Niamh Kavanagh herself came too. They all stayed locally in Michael & Pam Thorntons beautiful new B ‘n B at Drishanebeg. They told us that there is more positive talk about Millstreet around the world than any other place that hosted it. It was different, it was great, and it was their reason for coming back to recall it all again. Cameras rolled  as  volumes of memorabilia  so lovingly preserved, were brought to light and stories of the whole euphoria were told again. Niamh wanted to meet everybody, shake every hand, hug everybody. It was as she said, like coming home. All too soon their three days were gone and they had to leave, but the memories and friendships live on. Lots of their visit was captured for LTV2, so you’ll see them in time. Look up our website also and in time we will get a copy of their entire documentary.

Johnny Jack From Clara Or The Devil From Hell

A story from my childhood I often heard old timers tell
One that I remember as memory serves me well
Of Johnny Jack of Claramore two miles from Millstreet Town
To be a champion road bowler his great claim to renown.
.
On his way home from Macroom on horseback on a sunny sunday
The wildflowers were blooming in the prime of the May
Johnny Jack in his sixties then well past his life’s prime
Had been retired from road bowling for quite a long time.
.
Two miles out of Macroom on the road to Millstreet
Two young bowl players with their backers he happened to meet
And though the old bloke on horseback they had not seen before
From their fathers they would have heard of the champ from Claramore.

Methodist Update September 2010

Hi again folks,
I am just back from Haiti having spent a week there planning various mission projects including a team which I will lead from the Methodist Church in Ireland travelling for two and a half weeks after Christmas. Twenty years ago I lived and worked in Haiti for a period and was pleased that the language came back to me reasonably well! It was good to be there again but of course very distressing to see the amount of devastation since the earthquake. However it was also hugely impressive to see the way that the Haitian people, who have always had great guts, have begun to rise up again and get on with their lives as best they can. Most Haitians just survive as best they can with no real job. Like every other organization the Methodist Church in Haiti has been badly rocked by the earthquake but again there is a determined effort to re-build and resurrect all aspects [read more …] “Methodist Update September 2010”

A Reunion of Minor Row Friends

A wonderful reunion in Church Street, Millstreet today when (second from left) Eamonn McSweeney (Cork) met with Ron O'Connor (Australia) together with his brother Joe (Millstreet) and sister Margaret (Millstreet). All four (including yours truly behind the camera!) are all natives of Minor Row, Millstreet where we all grew up in the 1950s,1960s and 1970s. Note the exquisite view of Clara Mountain in the background. (Seán)
