Shannon Cruise – Part One
We invite you to join us for Part One of a recent Darren Kealy’s Coaches day tour to the River Shannon and beyond. Here we share images of our arrival at Ballina, Co. Tipperary where some 51 people enjoyed a very warm welcome at the Lakeside Hotel from Manager, Eoin Little and his very friendly Staff who served delicious scones with coffee and tea. With William Fitzgerald as Driver of our coach and Charlie Drake as a very helpful Guide/Co-ordinator we then proceeded to the nearby very scenic Killaloe Harbour, Co. Clare where

Sean Radley retires
Yesterday saw the end of an era as Seán Radley officially retired from his teaching position in the Presentation National School. As a teacher he has been renowned for the quality of his work, emphasised by the fact that he was asked to give lectures in universities in Cork and Dublin. Most in Millstreet know Seán through the schools, or through his tremendous work in the community with Millstreet Museum, LTV2, and more recently here on millstreet.ie, and his efforts in the community are appreciated by all. We wish him well with this transition, and we are sure that he’ll be as ever-present in the community as before.

Millstreet Celtic 4 Killowen 0
A.U.L. 2A – Millstreet Celtic 4 Killowen 0 (Thursday 26th August)
Killowen’s first away fixture of the campaign ended in defeat as costly errors in the second period contributed to Millstreet’s victory. Despite a promising first half showing, Killowen faded badly in the final quarter, as Millstreet’s superior fitness and teamwork prevented any notions of a Killowen comeback. The Killowen line up featured new signing Jason Mc Carthy in midfield with experienced ‘keeper Eamonn Murphy resuming in goal. Millstreet opened with a number of long range efforts that didn’t trouble Murphy whereas Killowen’s main source of attack stemmed from Pa Bermingham’s excursions down the left wing. Millstreet had a goal disallowed for pushing in the area before Owen Braun set up Declan O’ Brien after 27 minutes but his effort was blocked. [read more …] “Millstreet Celtic 4 Killowen 0”

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1028 from Millstreet.
Fondest greeting dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this beautiful Tuesday morning the last day of August.
The beautiful weather continues to make work and play very enjoyable for everyone. For the past couple of weeks people are out picking blackberries, some for the very first time and seeking advice from the more experienced about how to make jam, the proper sugar to use, how to freeze them and so on. On the wider scale the grain harvesting is almost complete with returns as were seldom seen as good before, and prices up 50%, because of the drought in other countries. Everything else like silage, potatoes, vegetables etc. falls into the same line. The fine weather brought young and old out in the great out of doors to enjoy country walks, trips to the sea, or just messing around at home.
The schools are re-opening this week and for once the children have a fine summer to their backs as they face the confines of the classroom. And please be on the lookout for the extra traffic ,especially around schools, school buses and so on.

Our Pipe Band was very busy attending key events, The Rose of Tralee parade on Saturday evening and the Michael Collins Memorial service at Beal na Blath on Sunday. and well done to them also.

New lights on Mullaghanish
Work is ongoing on the the new digital TV transmitting mast on Mullaghanish which is beside the old analogue transmitter. Signal testing has been taking place over the last while, and last week they turned on the beacon lights for aircraft etc … but they are so much stronger than the old lights, as to actually hurt the eyes if you look at them, and Millstreet is six miles away! The masts are easily visible from parts of Millstreet, and several locals have complained about how bright and intrusive they are (you can even see the lights during the day).
Lots of people were ringing into C103 radio station last Friday complaining about them, and there was a also this letter in the Examiner:
Mast light blots out the sky and pierces the eyes
AND so they have finally wiped out the sky. Stargazers lament. The strobe-like light atop the new TV mast at Mullaghanish in Co Cork must be the worst case of light pollution I have ever witnessed. [read more …] “New lights on Mullaghanish”
