Anne Casey Joy Memorial Classic Car Run

On Sunday 29th May, 112 cars left Darby O’Gills Hotel in Killarney and set off on a 90 mile tour of the mountains of Kerry. The aim was to raise money for the Oncology Unit in Tralee General Hospital. The run coincided with the first anniversary of Anne Casey Joy who passed away on 24th May 2010.

Organised by Anne’s brother Declan, along with her husband Billy, and a number of good friends, the route took the cars over the famous Molls gap, Ballaghbeama Pass, Ballaghasheen pass and continued to a rest halt at Rossbeigh Beach. Finally the convoy made its way to Beaufort via another famous landmark, Caragh Lake where [read more …] “Anne Casey Joy Memorial Classic Car Run”

Millstreet Methodist Update June 2011

In the Methodist Church June is always marked by the Annual National Conference of our Church.  This Conference is the main governing body of our Church and is the final authority in any decisions that we make as a Church.  It is carefully constituted of exactly half lay people and half ordained ministers.  It is presided over by the President of the Church who is a minister and the Lay Leader who is (obviously!) a lay person.  Every Methodist Church in Ireland is represented at the Conference and any Church or in fact even any individual member can bring a motion to the Conference.  In this way the Church seeks to involve everyone in its governance.  This is an important principal of Methodism. Please pray that God would guide all our deliberations and decisions. [read more …] “Millstreet Methodist Update June 2011”

JD’s a bad boy in Ros na Rún

Actor JD Kelleher who grew up on Minor Row is in the news for his character on the hit Irish language soap Ros na Rún. The long-running TG4 series ended the season on a disturbing note this week, as a little girl went missing just as radio station boss, Breandan Mac Gearailt (JD Kelleher), was exposed as a paedophile.

“It was a very challenging part and I welcomed that,” JD told the Herald. “He’s a very morally questionable character and that’s very interesting for an actor. “I never lost track of the fact that it’s drama so I wasn’t disturbed, I was just excited to play such a morally ambiguous character. I don’t know how viewers will react, it’s a very difficult subject. [read more …] “JD’s a bad boy in Ros na Rún”

Cork City Walkers Visit Millstreet and Thoroughly Enjoy Clara Walk

Alerted by the recent "Irish Times" feature on the Clara Walk these wonderfully energetic members of a Cork City Walking Group (many of whom are members of a Cork Tennis Club) enjoyed not only a superb walk this evening (Sunday, 29th May 2011) but also a splendid picnic upon Clara Mountain. Meeting with the very fit Group at Mount Leader, LTV2's Brendan Murphy (on video camera) and I arranged to interview the sincerely friendly and very cheerful people for the Autumn Schedule of LTV2. They accorded much praise regarding the excellent Clara walkway. It's wonderfully uplifting noting the visit of such interesting people to our area who promote the advantages of such healthy outdoor pursuits. (Picture by Seán Radley for website and LTV2)

Reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy

The Irish Times today profiles the walk up Clara Mountain bringing in Mount Leader House and other items along the route:
—————–
Reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy are a compelling attraction on the way up Claragh Mountain.

THE GHOSTS of old estates with their haunting reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy always provide a compelling attraction and I can mooch around them for hours, especially if they are not well frequented. Such is the case with the Mount Leader Estate through which the Duhallow Way provides access to Claragh Mountain (452m) whose profile provides such a fine backdrop to the town of Millstreet.
