Millstreet Methodist Update August

Hello again to everyone. Hopefully you are all enjoying the wonderful “Irish” summer!! Of course these days we are being reminded that the weather is not the only thing we can’t control. It seems that all the news these days is about huge monetary figures that are far beyond our imagination. These are uncertain days and we are certainly being reminded that we cannot rely on material possessions as a secure foundation for our lives. In these days I often think of the words from the Bible found in 1 Peter 1:3-4 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth in to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you….” It’s wonderful to know that if our personal trust is in Jesus Christ then we can have certainty in this world and the next.
Our meetings in Millstreet continue this month on Sundays 14th and 28th August at 7.00 p. m. meeting, as always in the Canon O’Donovan Centre (kindly granted) on Clara Road in Millstreet town. [read more …] “Millstreet Methodist Update August”

Francis Connors looking to do well at Millstreet

From today’s Examiner:  Francis Connors has been competing at Millstreet Horse Show for “about 35 years”, and is determined to add to his good memories of the Cork event this week. The Waterford rider is a 10-time national champion and accepted as one of the best exponents of the sport.

That, though, does not guarantee success and, while he mostly remembers the good times, he admits his aspirations have not always been fulfilled at Millstreet, which begins its five-day stint today… [Read the full article]

Genealogy: Griffins / O’Sullivans

My great grandfather Tom Griffin arrived In Millstreet from Co. Mayo C1885. He married Hannah Daughter of Jeremiah O’Sulliavan. They had four children: Mary, Tom, JJ, and Paddy Griffin. Hannah Griffin died and was buried in Cahir Co. Tipperary C1939. The last Griffin was Gretta who owned and ran the pub Tanglewood on the Main Street in Millstreet about 2003.
Anyone have more information on the Griffins / O’Sullivans, or are there any other relations out there?

In Millstreet Hospital

My cousin, they tell me, doesn’t wake up much,
nor does she seem to see the green mountain
framed in the window of this chapel of ease
for travellers booked in for their long pilgrimage.
When I leave at the end of visiting-hours
a small, tidy man is sitting by the door:
stick, well-knotted tie, watch-chain, tweed jacket.
He gets to his feet, raises his hat and enquires:
‘Excuse my troubling you, but would you be
going anywhere near a railway station?’
The young smiling nurse bends over him,
and takes him by the elbow, saying:
‘Maybe tomorrow, James. Maybe tomorrow
we’ll take you to the station.’

A True Irish Welcome at Kilmeedy, Millstreet

The wonderful smiles say it all! What a truly heartfelt sincere Irish welcome was accorded when Margaret Kelleher (on left) and I visited the very lovely home of Eileen O'Mahony at Kilmeedy, Millstreet on Wednesday afternoon. The splendid tea and refreshmnents added further to the great conversation.

It really was a magnificent trip down memory lane when Margaret and I went for a walk up the avenue (near Eileen’s home) on the direction of Clara Mountain which afforded some remarkably beautiful panoramic [read more …] “A True Irish Welcome at Kilmeedy, Millstreet”

Munster U21 Hurling Final

GAA BeoAs mentioned previously, Mark Ellis plays at wing-back (#7) for Cork against Limerick in the Munster U21 Hurling Final tonight at 7:30. For those of us that can’t make the game at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick, it will be live on TV as gaeilge on TG4 from 7:15.
—–
It what has been described as the best game in any sport anywhere in the world this year, Limerick pipped Cork in extra time to win on a final scoreline of Limerick 4-20 Cork 1-27. Mark Ellis was unlucky to be pitted against Limerick’s best forward Jamie Coughlan before he made way at half time. An enthralling game you can see on the TG4 website. (It is is a number of parts)

First half * Second half * Extra time (not available yet)

Sincere Congratulations to Alanna Barry on Magnificent All-Ireland Success

Millstreet is indeed very proud of the very wonderful Alanna Barry who as a member of the Cork team achieved All-Ireland success with her team in the weekend’s All Ireland Ladies Minor Football Final which took place in Birr.   Alanna’s  superb input in the game was very significant in the uplifting great result for the team.    Well done, Alanna.

And we wish the very talented  Mark Ellis every good luck tonight as he participates as a member of the Cork team in the U21 Munster Hurling Final at Limerick when Cork play against Limerick.

On The Passing Of Dick Kiely

Dick Kiely was the principal teacher when I was in primary school
And he seemed quite impartial and with fairness he did rule
He did not have his favourites as some other teachers had
A good and honest fellow and in him nothing bad.

A famous gaelic footballer when he was in his prime
But I never see him playing it was before my time
By all accounts the mighty Dick was a renowned athlete
One of the famous sportsmen for to represent Millstreet.
