by

Eil Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1036 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this rather wintery Tuesday morning.

Another highly successful horsey weekend has come to an end here in Millstreet. The 24th Pony Owners Show which is run here every year for charity,  was said to be the biggest to date, with patrons coming from North and South of the Border to compete. Over 3,000 entries were on the books and competitons went on from early morning till late evening since Thursday. And the finals on Sunday night didn’t end till 3am on Monday  morning.

The head man Keith Griffin was over-joyed by the support, which included getting the venue free of charge from the Duggan Family, and many deserving causes throughout the country will benefit from the proceeds . Well done all round.

Cuts to Night-time Ambulance Services?

The HSE has moved to cut night- time cover at almost half of its ambulance bases in the south west region are to be thrashed out at the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) after unions vehemently objected to the proposals. Last June, the HSE put forward several proposals aimed at rotating closures of ambulance stations in order to cut on-call payments to ambulance crews. SIPTU believes the HSE is softening its approach in the face of LRC meetings and that a brokered agreement will significantly dilute the initial proposals.

Under the proposals, only two of the three ambulance stations serving Youghal, Midleton and Fermoy would remain open any weekday night. Each one, it emerged, would have to close on a rotating basis.
It also proposed that only two of the stations serving Mallow, Kanturk, Millstreet and Macroom areas would remain operational, while Caherciveen and Kenmare would rotate cover on the two Kerry peninsulas. Listowel and Dingle ambulance stations would alternate to cover each other’s areas.

Keeper of Tubrid Well & Shrine

James O’Sullivan keeper of Tubrid Well Shrine near Millstreet, Co Cork

I caretake it. I inherited a responsibility, an obligation from my father, who inherited it from his father, and I will pass it along to my son Matthew as well. I come from farming stock, and we always take our responsibilities seriously. We didn’t have a whole lot, but what we did we looked after. And I see this as my duty – to look after this well the same way my father did.

Around the well there are rosary beads, and then there’s a crucifix at the end of that. So people come down and they do the rounds. The usual thing is to go around three times. There are people down there, I am not joking you, every hour of every day. The month of May being the month of Mary, that’s when people go there in their droves. And I mean at any one time on a Sunday afternoon, there could be 300 people, 400 people there. You might think maybe it was only the elderly people that go there, and sure enough they do go there. But there are younger people as well. I see a lot of people in their 20s. [read more …] “Keeper of Tubrid Well & Shrine”

Parade of Retiring Riders at Green Glens Equestrian Event

The Sunday Parade as well as the Prize Giving at the annual Owners Pony & Young Riders Charity Show is always so very colourful and is hugely popular with the audience.    As I walked down to be in time at Green Glens I noted a “deer” in the grounds of Millstreet Community School!   Not a real live deer but rather a superb sculpture apparently recently been placed on the grass setting at the entrance of the school.   Arriving at Green Glens I was just in time to [read more …] “Parade of Retiring Riders at Green Glens Equestrian Event”
