Apple Day at The Secret Garden Centre 23rd October

Our annual Apple Day takes place this Sunday from 1 – 5pm. We will once again be joined by John McNamara of McNamara Nurseries, who has been growing trees since he was a sapling. He’ll be on hand to give advice on choosing and growing apples, and he’ll be bringing along some apples from his nursery for you to taste. We’ll also be joined by Ballyhoura Apple Farm who will be selling their delicious award-winning juices. If that’s not enough there’ll also be poultry for sale on the day(hens are the perfect partner for an orchard!) and apple specials in the Tea Room.

A Millstreet Love Story

The latest from the Aubane Historical Society is unusual in that it is a love story set in Millstreet and written in 1905 by one of the best known writers of the day, George Egerton. It is called “The Marriage of Mary Ascension.”

Egerton was in fact a woman, Mary Dunne, who had lived in a cottage named ‘Ardrath’ near Millstreet for some time (1892-1894), and the story is based on her experiences here. It is an unsparing account of the town and some people in it.

It is interesting in a number of ways. Among other things she suggests that the town had a previous Gaelic name that meant “the little town in the lap of the hills.”

It is currently available from Wordsworth in the Square and other outlets for €5.

Regional report 1087 – 18th October 2011

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome this news report 1087 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this bright but cold and wintery Tuesday morning.

A very enjoyable function was held at the Clara Inn on Friday night last atwhich the proceeds of the fundraising efforts in memory of the late Jerry O Leary, was presented to the Oncology department of CUH. Over the past number of months since his untimely death, his family and friends have used different ways to raise funds in his honour, from a Coffee morning at his home in Rathcoole, to a monster auction and then a Vintage Day out of Drishane Castle. In all over €25,000 was raised. All those connected with this great venture have to be commended. And May the Lord reward their efforts.

Genealogy: Fordes, Riordans and Buckleys

Mike Cotter has a number of queries of people from the Millstreet area:
1) I am trying to find out anything that people might know of the family/descendants of a Patrick Forde and his wife Julia (Riordan), who lived in Gortaveha, Drishane at the end of the 1800’s. I know that two sons of theirs emigrated to the States and one grandchild, Nellie Forde, was born in 1895 in Scotland.
2) I am also interested in finding any descendants of a Dan and Margaret Riordan who lived in Toorboney, who were married in 1903 and had the following children; Tim, Julia, John, Michael and Hannah, all born between 1903 and 1911.
3) Lastly, I would also like to make contact with, or find out about the family of Dan Buckley and Johanna Riordan, who were married on 9/2/1896, and lived in Caherbarnagh. They had 8 children; William, Margaret, Tim, Julia, Mary, Hannah, Josephine and Daniel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Donoughomore 1 Millstreet Celtic 2

We beat Donoughmore 2-1 away in a hard fough game this afternoon. There were no real chances early in the game except for some set pieces that created some half chances. We took the lead after 20 mins after an excellent move. Eamon O Keeffe started it with a nice ball down the line to Tadhg Collins. Collins cut in along the end line and squared it for the onrushing Chris Cleary to slot home. We pressed for the second but Donoughmore got back level after 35 mins with a penalty. Five mins before half time we took the lead again. Michael Murphy was fouled 25 yards from goal and Tim Kiely stepped up to [read more …] “Donoughomore 1 Millstreet Celtic 2”

In Tribute to a True Gentleman – the late Paddy Mulcahy of Cork City

A special Tribute Stone has in September 2011 been put in place at Mushera marking the location where Paddy Mulcahy of Cork City – a superb teacher, splendid husband and father – sadly went to his Eternal Reward while participating with others in a walk on Mushera Mountain on Sunday, 13th September 2009.   Paddy’s beloved wife, Terry, wishes to express her heartfelt gratitude to the numerous people (many from the Millstreet area) who accorded much appreciated support and comfort not only on that very sad day but in the days and months that followed.   I had the privilege of having known Paddy in his work as a magnificent teacher in the world of special needs and thereafter as Principal Teacher.    A true gentleman of the very highest calibre, Paddy’s wonderfully cheerful approach to life tremendously uplifted the spirits of all who met him.   We thank Terry for sharing this photograph with us and we feel certain that when people will pass this beautiful panoramic setting – an area which Paddy so loved to visit – they will say a special prayer in memory.   Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.   (S.R.)
