Genealogy: Sweeney / Creedon

After a long search I have finally found out where my great grandparents came from i.e. Millstreet and Drishane. I am hoping that someone has some information that coud take me further with my family’s history.

Michael Sweeny was born Millstreet Workhouse on the 25th July 1865. His parents were Margaret Creedon and John Sweeny who shortly after came to live in Brentford, England where they had a further two children, Cornelius (1867) and Margaret (1870), my grandmother.

Another child, Johanna Sweeny, had been born in Cork in 1859 but [read more …] “Genealogy: Sweeney / Creedon”

Rathcoole Rovers 0 Millstreet Celtic 4

We beat Rathcoole on an impressive score line of 4-0 yesterday evening in the St Michaels Cup. We started very well; with almost our first attack, we were awarded a penalty when Michael Murphy was tripped inside the box after making a great run from midfield. Tadgh Collins stepped up and confidently slotted home our opener. Just five minutes later we were up two, when Finbarr Corcoran split the Rathcoole defence with a fantastic long pass to find Brian Murphy who squared the ball to Michael Murphy and he was again hacked down inside the box giving us our second penalty. Collins converted again with a cracking strike to the top of the net to make it two. Late in the [read more …] “Rathcoole Rovers 0 Millstreet Celtic 4”

Genealogy: Healy / Sweeney

My Healy Great Grandparents had a farm in Millstreet, My Grandmother Margaret Healy left the farm in the 1920′s and came to New York.

Does anyone know of a Denis and Margaret SWEENEY HEALY FARM IN Millstreet.T? We were in Millstreet a few years ago but could not find it. The children went to the Coulhabeg School and there were about 18 children, Any help would be great. Thanks a million, Chris Kennedy. <email>

Genealogy: Greetings from Connecticut

Greetings from Stamford, Connecticut, USA! I am proud to say that my ancestors lived in Millstreet at least as early as the 1830′s and probably long before that. My great-great-grandfather John Murphy married Ellen Curtin in Millstreet parish in 1858. Their daughters Mary and Margaret went to the US in the 1880′s, son Daniel went to NZ, and daughter Ellen (Nellie) and sons Patrick and Daniel (Twins) and John, I have no idea what happened to them. Margaret disliked America and came back to Ireland; she and Nellie ran a guesthouse in Cork city at 8 Kings Terrace, that still stands, from at least 1910 on.

Would love to find out if there are any Murphys and Curtins still living in Millstreet whose roots go back to the 1830′s. Better still would be to find living cousins!

From photos I can see that your area is beautiful, and I hope to come visit soon.

News Report 1088 – 25th October 2011

by

Eily Buckley

Dia Is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1088 from Millstreet. Fondest greeting dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on thiscalm but overcast Tuesday morning.

Two nights stand out among all the rest on our town’s annual calendar,  as far as good entertainment is concerned. St Stephens Night and the night of the Fancy Dress Ball. Last Friday night our town was a mecca of fun and colour and sheer enjoyment. All week people of all ages scanned the shops and their findings found them dressed in regalia that they would not be seen dead in the following day. Every kind of paint and colour   was used to good effect. And best of all it was all in a good cause. This years proceeds will go to Cope, for the care of people with special needs. Once again the Aubane Social Club and the Wallis Arms Hotel have to be lauded for the running of this great annual event, and for such a great cause.
