Millstreet Celtic 6 Rathcoole Rovers 0

We beat Rathcoole A 6-0 in our County Cup local derby in Millstreet today. Both teams were slow to get going but we struck first in the 15th minute. Paul Dawson picked the ball up on the left wing and passed inside to Barry Lawlor who finished well. This was the start of a 10 min spell that put us firmly in the driving seat as 5 mins later Lawlor picked out Chris Cleary who tucked away the second. And just a few mins later it was 3. Cleary got free in the box and laid the ball back to the onrushing Danny O Riordan who was brought down for a penalty which Tadhg Collins rolled home. We were well on top and had a number of chances before we got [read more …] “Millstreet Celtic 6 Rathcoole Rovers 0”

Methodist Update – February 2012

It is so wonderful to realize that God’s family crosses just about every ‘border’ of nationality, culture, language and race. During February most Methodist Churches specially focus on partner Churches around the world seeking to share our resources with them and also to receive insight, challenge and inspiration from our sisters and brothers in different places. While Methodism is small in this area there are approximately seventeen million Methodists worldwide. This year in particular we are focusing on the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe which continues to faithfully witness to God’s grace in the midst of very difficult circumstances in that land. We are also thrilled that even in our small group in Millstreet there are many different nations represented. May it always [read more …] “Methodist Update – February 2012”

UCC 1 Millstreet Celtic 4

We beat UCC 4 – 1 in the Mardyke last night to record our 7th straight win in the league. We started the game well and had a chance to take the lead after just 30 seconds. Chris Cleary caught a defender in possession and played in Tadhg Collins who shot just wide. I didn’t take us long to find the opening goal though. In the 10th min Barry Lawlor played Cleary in down the left and his cross to the back post was perfect for Collins to nod home. We were well on top now and almost added a second in the 25th min. The ball broke to Paul Dawson in the area but his shot came back off the post. Cleary picked up on the loose ball and played it back to Michael Murphy whose shot clipped the top of the crossbar. UCC drew level in the 35th min after a defensive mix up and despite having another couple of half chances, we went in at the break level. UCC had a good 5 mins at the start of the 2nd half but after [read more …] “UCC 1 Millstreet Celtic 4”

Regional Report 1102 – 14th February 2012

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1102. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this  lovely Spring morning.

Sadly, this week we mourn the passing of one of our most outstanding people. Willie Neenan, who was born in August of  1933, will forever go down in the history books of Millstreet as being our  best ever in the field of athletics.
His sporting career stretched from the age of fifteen, when he became part of the Millstreet Athletic Club to when he won a silver medal, in the world Veteran  Cross Country Championships at the age of 50, in Puerto Rico, and still he continued to race and win, well into his seventies.
During his long years in sport he never failed to encourage others to get involved and to train and to become winners too.
The huge crowds that attended his funeral went to show the high esteem at which Willie Neenan was held by his co-athletes as well as our community at large. May his gentle soul now rest in peace as we offer our deepest sympathy to his lovely wife Marie and his family.

On The passing Of Willie Neenan

Sad the news of the passing of the legendary athlete
Surely the greatest ever in the green of Millstreet
Against the best in Ireland and the World with success he did compete
Yet despite his fame and success he was one without conceit

The marvellous Willie Neenan he was a mighty man
In more than sixty years of running in thousands of races he ran
So humble in his many victories and gracious in defeat
Every time he lined up at the starting line he was the one to beat
