Of his arrival in Millstreet on Monday he said: ” Running(walking!) behind schedule Joe and Willie welcomed us to Millstreet by leading us over the last climb of the day (Clara Mt.) and into Millstreet. A day that began at 9.15am came to close at 6.15pm and some 20 odd miles covered was again a very special day and I finish by saying a Cead Mile Maith Agaibh to Padraig agus Donal, Rachel agus Cathal, Joe and Willie for their Welcome to Country.”

He stayed for the night at Geararoe B&B with Eily Buckley. The following day he walked with Michael Thornton, who took him across the Boeing, to Derrinagree School, and on to Lismire, and he said of his day: “To end a perfect day Michael brought me to his

In Millstreet’s West End than Elizabeth there was none quite so fair
But from the Millstreet Town of her young years she died far away
None of her siblings are living in Millstreet today
A credit to her family and the Town of Millstreet
One always quite friendly and pleasant to meet
With those who knew her good memories of her will remain

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir Cairde and welcome to news report 1118 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this rather wet but calm Tuesday morning.

It was another action packed week here in Millstreet with many, many people working on a voluntary basis to make Millstreet a better place. Let me remind you once again that Judging for the Tidy Towns Competition, at all levels, starts in June, and will go on right through the Summer months. So
please make a visible start on what you plan to do in your own place. I’m asking road users to please stop throwing litter out of their car . This problem has improved, but you’d be surprised at those who still have not taken it on board.

The Men Who Played For K R R

The men who for Killarney Road Rovers did play
From Neily Duggan’s Inch Field some of them live far away
Whilst some of them in and near Millstreet did stay
And a few of them deceased which does seem sad to say

But as is often said few things seem to last
The Killarney Road Rovers a Football Club are a Football Club of the past
They will never play in the Inch Field again
And only the memories of them now remain

The Concert will also assist the musicians to fund their forthcoming visit to Derry where they will meet many other very gifted musicians and teachers.   We shall be sharing highlights of the Drishane Concert on Cork Music Station on Tuesday, 12th June between 8-9 p.m. in the “Radio Treasures” broadcast.   The Drishane Chapel [read more …] ““Strings” Concert at Drishane Chapel”

Hello from Boston

Hello from Boston ! I am attempting to trace my family back to Millstreet in the early 1800′s. Would you by any chance know of someone local that undertakes geaneology research for hire ?

I suspect my great great grandfather Denis Buckley and his wife Ellen Buckley nee Welch /Walsh came from Millstreet. Dennis and Ellen had at least one son Richard D. Buckley born around Nov. 1845. He emigrated to America in 1861 and settled in Bosto. I believe Ellen’s fater was Edmond Walsh from Millstreet born around 1822.

I would apreciate any help or guidance you may be able to provide as I will be in Kenmare in early Oct. and would love to visit Millstreet if I can establish a family connection.

All the best, Jack Buckley ( <email> )

Justin Case

He said his name was Justin Case, which seemed a wee bit odd
Because he was so cavalier, so spiffy and so mod.
When buying socks or shoes or gloves, he always bought three pairs
He didn’t want to end up short as he came down the stairs…
just in case

When traveling on a train or bus he purchased fares for four
And even though he had these seats, he stood right by the door.
He owned a house or two or three but lived in only one
He had a car, a truck, a jeep, an epee and a gun…
just in case

Kanturk Garda District to be Axed

A possible major shake-up of policing is on the cards for Cork which will involve the axing of two garda districts – Cobh and Kanturk (of which Millstreet is part of).
The stations at Ballydesmond, Millstreet, Boherbue and Rathmore, Co Kerry, will fall under the control of senior gardaí in Macroom.
The remaining stations in the Kanturk district — including Kanturk itself, Newmarket, Meelin — will come under the direction of Mallow.
If the proposal is enacted it could mean that administrative staff, and possibly specialist units, would be transferred from the current district headquarters in Cobh and Kanturk to other stations. [read the full story in today’s Irish Examiner (31st May 2012) ]
