Inspiring Volunteers Coordinate Aid for Moldovan Orphanage

Loading Much Needed Aid for Moldovan Orphanage. Recorded by LTV2 at East Link Industrial Estate in Limerick on Saturday, 9th June 2012. With William Fitzgerald (on extreme right) on camera we arranged to record interviews with Austin Long from Co. Cork and Fran Noone (1st from left) from Co. Louth having met their superb volunteer co-workers from Co. Limerick. The full container will be transported by Austin ( 5th from left) to Moldova within the next few weeks. The generosity not only of these splendid Volunteers but of the many Companies, Hotels, Shops and Individuals who contributed such items as hundreds of pairs of shoes, thousands of nappies (which are like gold in that country), complete toilet sets including sinks, two ton of porridge, beds, toys etc. - is utterly awe-inspiring and shows why Ireland has such a great name abroad. Our LTV2 feature on our visit to the project on Saturday will be shown online very soon. We shall alert you to the feature on our website. (S.R.)

What a big day of sport ahead for us today: Cork play Kerry in the senior football championship at Pairc Ui Caoimh at 2pm, and later Ireland play Croatia at the UEFA championships at 7:45pm. We’ve been waiting 10 years for Ireland to be back in a major championships. Hopefully it will be a perfect day … (half way there already – Kerry boys seen to fairly handily) … the less said about the soccer the better 🙁

She became a nun in the U S of A

Murphy Family has combined 200 years of service

From the Irish Examiner: The Murphys have a remarkably long service record with Liebherr hotels in Co Kerry, touching on 200 years between them.

Donie Murphy, concierge at The Europe, is the hotel’s longest-serving employee and plans to retire next year after 51 years.

The Millstreet, Co Cork, native started as a commis waiter in 1962. It was a summer job that became permanent and he now wonders where all the years have gone.

“Working at the porter’s desk, you meet hundreds of people and I certainly love that. If you put an effort into your work, you don’t miss time passing and I’ve always enjoyed being with people,” he says.

At this stage, Donie could spend hours listing the names of celebrities, leading politicians and sports stars he has welcomed.

Singers Rod Stewart and Joe Dolan, actors Rex Harrison [read more …] “Murphy Family has combined 200 years of service”

Looking for Murrays of Ballydaly

I am interested in getting in touch with any descendants or family members of the Murrays who lived in Ballydaly from about 1909 to the 1940s. Denis Murray who came from Curraleigh married (in 1909) Nora Breen whose family lived in Ballydaly during the 1800s. My grandfather from England visited the Murrays during WW2 in 1940 and 1941. I would like to shed some light on the reasons for his visits.

Competition Authority finds in favour of Millstreet Horse Show

from MillstreetHorseShow.ie: The Competition Authority has recently finalised its investigation into alleged anti-competitive behaviour by Show Jumping Ireland (SJI). They have found in favour of the consumers right to free choice thus vindicating our position held firmly over the past three years.

Subject to two laid conditions being met by the host show, SJI members cannot be penalised in any way – to do so would be unlawful. Millstreet International Horse Show has no difficulty in satisfying these two conditions.

The Millstreet International Horse Show is on from Tuesday 7th to Sunday 12th of August 2012.

Coming Home to get Married in September

From Today’s Irish Times: Donagh O’Sullivan, from Cullen, near Millstreet, has worked for more than 20 years in Britain – but he is coming home in September to get married.
The September 8th nuptials mark a homecoming of sorts, too, for his bride-to-be, Francesca Fenaroli, even though she had never heard of Millstreet until she met the Cork man in London three years ago.
“We had been dating for about a year when she showed me her family tree in her mother’s house. Her mother’s maiden name was O’Connor,” he says. A quick examination revealed the Millstreet connection.
Fenaroli’s great-great grandfather, John O’Connor, had married in 1872 in the same church in Millstreet that will be used by O’Sullivan and Fenaroli.

“They had known he [O’Connor] was from Cork, but not that he was from Millstreet. This story is more interesting than [read more …] “Coming Home to get Married in September”

She’d be a lovely little country if you could only roof it!

Well there went our summer! Listening to Radio 1 this morning, weatherman Gerard Fleming forecast about 100mm of rain up to tomorrow (friday) afternoon on the Cork / Kerry border. We had about 30mm last night, so we’ve a bit to go yet, and add in some high winds tonight too … but it seems to be just coming and coming! To put it into perspective, in the very bad flooding in June 2009, we got 92mm, though in the space of a few hours.

All the same, look the video below which might give you a laugh, and make you forget about it … for a short while 😉 … [read more …] “She’d be a lovely little country if you could only roof it!”

Peter Lonergan – Walking Visitor to Millstreet

Joe Fitzgerald, Willie O'Regan, and Peter Lonergan at the front door of Mount Leader House

A visitor to Millstreet for the last two days was Peter Lonergan, a Cork man living in Australia for the last thirty years who is following the footsteps of the O’Sullivan Beara March of 1603 from West Cork to Leitrim. Of his arrival in Millstreet on Monday he said: ” Running(walking!) behind schedule Joe and Willie welcomed us to Millstreet by leading us over the last climb of the day (Clara Mt.) and into Millstreet. A day that began at 9.15am came to close at 6.15pm and some 20 odd miles covered was again a very special day and I finish by saying a Cead Mile Maith Agaibh to Padraig agus Donal, Rachel agus Cathal, Joe and Willie for their Welcome to Country.”

He stayed for the night at Geararoe B&B with Eily Buckley. The following day he walked with Michael Thornton, who took him across the Boeing, to Derrinagree School, and on to Lismire, and he said of his day: “To end a perfect day Michael brought me to his
