When i was in my better days some four decades ago
Some pretty and quite friendly girls they lived in Minor Row
I never got to talk to them though them i often see
And they remain as they were then young in my memory.
Perhaps some of them left Minor Row for places far away
Whilst others less adventurous in Millstreet Town did stay
Perhaps some married and raised children and others single did remain
I knew them by sight only and i may not see them again.
Blessed with magnificent weather on the day the official opening was followed by a number of speeches and a splendid musical and drama presentation by the very talented pupils. Then followed the partaking of a wide variety of [read more …] “Opening of New Cullen N.S. on 9th June 2012 – Part Two”
Joan Ankettell, Boherbue who used to work at the Avonmore Electrical Co. in West End, Millstreet provided Maree Healy, Cloghoulamore, Millstreet with this very interesting school class photograph of 1936 taken in the Presentation Secondary School, Millstreet. Joan is seated in the front row to the extreme right (Her name appears under her). We believe that Gobnait Twomey also appears in the photograph. Maree and the website team would be very grateful of identification of the various people in this quite excellent photograph by any of our many Millstreet website visitors. Many thanks to Joan and Maree for making this fascinating picture available to us to share with all worldwide. (S.R.)

The fine weather at the weekend was well appreciated for the annual Mass at St. John’s Well on Friday night and again for the Family fun day at Aubane on Sunday afternoon and also the lovely Country Park. So the people up there must be well in with him who makes the sunshine.

A dogged Millstreet came from five points down to draw their U21 County Championship quarter-final tie at Inchigeela on Saturday night.
The drama didn’t end there though, as confusion reigned about whether extra-time would go ahead or not. However, it was confirmed the match would go to a replay and with daylight disappearing it was the right decision.
Bantry forged 1-5 to 0-3 ahead at the beginning of the second half and appeared to be in the driving seat. But Millstreet, with midfielder-cum-centre-forward Michael Vaughan spearheading their attack, refused to give in. Vaughan finished with seven superb points and along with Brian G Murphy, Kevin Crowley and Michael Murphy led the revival … read the full article in today’s Irish Examiner

“… it emerged yesterday that disability rights campaigner Joanne O’Riordan has been selected for a Cork Person of the Month award.
The 16-year-old from Millstreet — who recently spoke at the UN — was nominated by MEP Brian Crowley and her cousin, Denise O’Donoghue.
She was chosen to mark her positive and inspirational work in the disability rights area. Her name now goes forward with other monthly winners for possible selection as the Cork Person of the Year which will be presented by President Michael D Higgins on Jan 18 next.” – from the Irish Examiner (21st June 2012)
Across so many bridges above river, stream and rill
Up the steep rise from Rylane to Mushera and to Aubane downhill
And on uphill to Tullig the road winds up and down
The back road from Cork City that leads to Millstreet Town.
A narrow mountain roadway through the hilly countryside
Through a rugged scenic valley that is known far and wide
Since tourists from all Nations have often passed this way
The scenery breathtaking on a clear and windless day.
