Jack Lane Speaks at the Kerryman’s Table on 19th August 2012

Historian supreme, Jack Lane gave an outstanding address at the Kerryman’s Table, Mushera, Millstreet at noon on Sunday, 19th August 2012.   Jack emphasised the importance of the Butter Road and gave a very interesting history of the famous Road.   It was held during Heritage Week 2012 as well as on the very same Sunday as the celebration of the centenary of Aubane N.S..  (S.R.)

While it was raining for part of Jack’s address this did not dampen the spirits of all who attended on the Sunday at this wonderfully picturesque setting.   Jack also introduced [read more …] “Jack Lane Speaks at the Kerryman’s Table on 19th August 2012”

The Child Born Without Eyes

The human will to succeed in the face of adversity never ceases to surprise
Three years old Jacob Nowak from Millstreet the child born without eyes
About to start pre school and in life progressing quite well
His story if written in book form millions of copies should sell

The child born without eyes he never may see
In Spring the lovely pink blossoms on the apple tree
Or see the old fields lush and green in April showers
Looking quite resplendent in their Nature’s flowers [read more …] “The Child Born Without Eyes”

On the high Butter Road above the the Town of Millstreet
There is laughter, song, dance and music where Aubane  people meet

Baby Jacob to start Pre-School

The parents of a little boy born with no eyes have told of their joy that their son has made enough progress to start pre-school.

Little Jacob Nowak, who celebrates his third birthday tomorrow, was born with a rare condition called anophthalmia, that left him without eyeballs or optic nerves and facing six years of surgery.

His parents Mariusz and Wiola had feared that Jacob, from Millstreet in Cork, would have no quality of life after discovering there was no funding available from the HSE to cover his €300,000 medical bills.

However, an overwhelming response from the public has transformed his life and allowed him to travel to Germany every three months for [read more …] “Baby Jacob to start Pre-School”

McCaul Goal puts Millstreet into Duhallow Final

Kanturk Credit Union Duhallow Junior Football Championship Semi Final

Millstreet 1-11 Lyre 1-09

Saturday, 25th August 2012 at 7.00 p.m. in Cullen

———-
Match Report
Lyre were red hot favourites for this game and had eyes on winning Duhallow and getting to the county final as they did two years ago, but it wasn’t to be as Millstreet came with a late goal to snatch victory and proceed to the Duhallow Final. Millstreet started the game strongly playing much the better football between the two half lines, controlling the ball and linking well with the forwards, but poor kicking meant the points weren’t coming. Lyre to their credit had few forrays towards the Millstreet goal, but they were much more clinical and after 15 minutes the score stood at two points a piece. However, Millstreet thanks to Patrick Coleman and Mark Ellis dominated the high ball in the middle of the field, and with the full forward line continuing to [read more …] “McCaul Goal puts Millstreet into Duhallow Final”

Oral History training in Duhallow 2012

IRD Duhallow is funding a training project in Oral Heritage Studies which will examine the wealth of our recorded folklore and oral history sources in Ireland at local and national level. This training forms part of a wider project in Duhallow to document elements of our heritage, local history and genealogy. “Oral History” can be a difficult term to describe but IRD Duhallow is seeking to perform training for the people of Duhallow to allow them to record both formal and informal accounts through the spoken word. This training is seeking to preserve others firsthand accounts of the past and to record these accounts accurately. While libraries and classrooms are full of history books, these books may only portray a small portion of our community’s true history. We are linking in with the University of Limerick over a 24 week period ensuring that the course will be participative and skills based. Participants will receive training in interviewing, writing, digitisation and presentation skills. For more information or an application form please contact Mary Mc Hugh on 029 60633.
