G.A.A. club sponsored walk great success

On Saturday September 29th while 17 people walked and completed the Drishane castle loop 60 others climbed Clara mountain to raise funds for our G.A.A. club and the Mercy hospital.
We are still collecting sponsorship cards but to date 1212 euro has been collected which is a fantastic amount in these difficult times.
A huge thank you goes out to each and everyone of you young and old who took part in this great event and thank you also to Thomas Duggan for allowing us to use Drishane.
On our return light refreshments were served  in our local G.A.A. hall much to the delight of the walkers.
Many thanks again -Carmel Walsh.

Of Toots Kelleher

Of Toots Kelleher only the memories remain
But in fancy i often does seem him again
In full flight for Millstreet in the green and gold
Though it is true about great men they too do grow old

Never found to be wanting when put to the test
For Cork, Munster and Millstreet he always gave of his best
In Cork, Coachford, Macroom, Killarney and in famed Croke Park
The Pride of Duhallow often left his mark [read more …] “Of Toots Kelleher”

Bio: Denis Long

Denis Long was one of Cork’s brightest stars in the 1973 galaxy of talent. Deep involvement continues in Tralee.

In the days when Carrolls used to sponsor the annual Hurling and Football All Star Awards, a small citation accompanied the photograph of each winner on the much sought after posters. The composer of the citations is unknown but he/she certainly did a fine job. Many descriptions of a player’s finer points were invoked but I can only recall one occasion on which the word “grace” was used. In 1973, Cork’s midfielder Denis Long received his award “for the grace of his football and for his intelligent and shrewd distribution of the ball.” Couldn’t have been more accurate. Two years later, Denis was again on the All Star team, “for his admirable combination of high work rate, excellent catching and lengthy kicking.” Yes, the man, or woman, behind those little citations knew a thing or two about [read more …] “Bio: Denis Long”

Census 2011: How many Polish in Millstreet

The Central Statistics Office today released its Migration and Diversity Report which looks at diversity in the form of non-Irish nationals living in Ireland, along with foreign languages spoken and ability to speak English.

Millstreet gets a mention on page 11 as the town with the 5th highest Polish Poluation in Ireland with 15% of its population being Polish nationals. A few years ago we reported that in 2006 Millstreet had by far the highest Polish population in the country at 14%. (see the tables below for details) It has risen slightly (even if anecdotally quite a few seem to have left) while other other towns have seen their Polish population climb dramatically. Indeed our close neighbours in Rathmore had [read more …] “Census 2011: How many Polish in Millstreet”

The Human Costs of Deportation

Yesterday saw the launch of a campaign of a new group called Anti-Deportation Ireland who are against the system of direct provision and the practice of deportation. One asylum seeker Aisha Yusuff wrote of the pain inflicted on her family by the deportation of her husband:

“I reside in Drishane Castle in Millstreet Accomodation Centre with my two children ages four and two, both born in Ireland. I arrived in Ireland in July 2008 with my husband to seek asylum. We were given deportation letters by the justice system a year later. The letters explained that as a family we were not to be separated and would be deported together.

We were asked to continually report to the GNIB office in Dublin so that our removal from the state could be facilitated. We did this for [read more …] “The Human Costs of Deportation”

Residential Property Prices

A long awaited register of residential property prices in Ireland has been launched yesterday afternoon (30th September).

The register, which can be seen at propertypriceregister.ie, provides the price, address and date of sale on residential properties purchased in Ireland since 1 January 2010.

It includes details for both cash sales and sales which involved mortgages. The Property Services Regulatory Authority said that the site will be updated on a regular basis with information published within a month of the date of a sale.

The site is awkward enough to navigate, however we have listed below the properties that sold in the Millstreet area since 2010. What is surprising is not the price of sale, but how few have been sold compared to what’s on the market. Having heard that some [read more …] “Residential Property Prices”

Millstreet Celtic 5 UCC A 4

We beat UCC 5-4 in a thrilling match in the town park this morning. We played well for the first 20 mins and had a number of chances through Tadhg Collins, Mark Ellis and Michael Murphy. We failed to convert though and were punished when we went behind 3 mins from half time. We came out quickly in the 2nd half and were ahead after 55 mins following 2 quickfire goals. The first came when Eamon O Keeffe swung over a corner that was well met by the head of Michael Murphy. Straight from the kickoff we won the ball back and went forward. The ball broke to Ellis in the UCC box where he turned and fired left footed to the top corner. The lead didn’t last long though. UCC were back on level terms in the 60th mins and [read more …] “Millstreet Celtic 5 UCC A 4”

Running the Butter Road: Bertie Harte

Mallow man Bertie Harte spoke recently at the Kerryman’s Table (during the Aubane Centenary celebrations) (photo right) about running the Butter Road from Tralee to Millstreet, a distance of 100km.

Today is the day, and he’s currently on route. He left Kerry County Museum in Tralee at 8:50am this morning headed for Castleisland and following the Butter Road he is currently (1pm) near Knocknagree and will continue to Rathmore where he will follow the Clara road for the last section as the main Rathmore to Millstreet road is too busy. He’s running at about 5mph so 3-3:30 should see him in Millstreet. He has a GPS tracker and you can track his current location on greenalp.com

It is hoped to have people greet him at the Wallis Arms Hotel, so please come out and give him your support.
