Grangevale 1 Millstreet Celtic 1

We drew 1-1 with Grangevale this morning after a hard fought game at Grangevale Park. Both teams started well and had early chances, ours falling to Michael Murphy whose strike from the edge of the box whistled just wide. Brian Murphy was causing the Grangevale defence a lot of problems and in the 20th min he beat two defenders and pulled a cross back for Paul Dawson but the finish was off target. Despite a few scares in our own box, we took the lead in the [read more …] “Grangevale 1 Millstreet Celtic 1”

Hugely popular renowned singer Lisa McHugh is welcomed to the Hazel Tree Inn, Mallow by William Fitzgerald at yesterday evening’s superbly successful official launch of Cork Music Station.   Lisa was top of the bill amongst a galaxy of excellent Country-and-Western and Irish Stars who participated in the spectacular evening of great entertainment in aid of Cullen & District Special Needs Association as well as the Austin Long Fund for Moldova.   It was William and his son, John, who initially established the very popular online radio station.   We shall be sharing lots more pictures later and the full concert was also recorded by LTV2 Millstreet with Seán Murphy as principal cameraman.   Michael Commins from Midwest Radio was the brilliant MC for the mighty occasion.   (S.R.)

 by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1136 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this rather wet but mild Tuesday morning.

Monthly meeting of the Community Council to-night at the Youth Centre starting at 9. All members please attend.

It was another busy weekend here in Millstreet which saw our brilliant Minor Hurling team win the County Final, defeating Aghada in Coachford on Saturday afternoon. The pipe band was out to meet them on their arrival back in Millstreet where they lauded for their great success.   They took the Cup around the town and their sense of pride was plain to see. Well done to them and to all associated with them.

And our U10 Football team won the shield in Canovee on Sunday under the careful guidance of trainer Tadgh O Donovan and his helpers.

Francis Duggan’s Poem Mentioned in Dáil Éireann

This is the article which appeared on last Wednesday’s “Irish Daily Mail” which contained the Francis Duggan poem which was partly quoted by Fianna Fáil Leader, Mícheál Martin, in Dáil Eireann on Tuesday, 2nd October 2012.   It was also included in the RTÉ television series “Oireachtas Report” (4:06 to 5:25) on Tuesday (on RTÉ Player until Oct 24th).   We thank Jerry Lehane (and also Jerry O’Connor) for the newspaper, Tommy Cooper in London for alerting us about the national reference and the Cooper Family, Claraghatlea for bringing the very interesting Dáil reference to our attention.   As the article indicated – Francis, a native of Claraghatlea, Millstreet lives in Australia for the past 23 years. But in fancy i often does seem him again
In full flight for Millstreet in the green and gold

Bio: Denis Long

Denis Long was one of Cork’s brightest stars in the 1973 galaxy of talent. Deep involvement continues in Tralee.

In the days when Carrolls used to sponsor the annual Hurling and Football All Star Awards, a small citation accompanied the photograph of each winner on the much sought after posters. The composer of the citations is unknown but he/she certainly did a fine job. Many descriptions of a player’s finer points were invoked but I can only recall one occasion on which the word “grace” was used. In 1973, Cork’s midfielder Denis Long received his award “for the grace of his football and for his intelligent and shrewd distribution of the ball.” Couldn’t have been more accurate. Two years later, Denis was again on the All Star team, “for his admirable combination of high work rate, excellent catching and lengthy kicking.” Yes, the man, or woman, behind those little citations knew a thing or two about [read more …] “Bio: Denis Long”
