Funding for Blackwater Bridge approved
Failte Ireland has approved €105,750 for a new pedestrian, cycling and wheelchair access bridge at Millstreet in Co Cork at the exact location where O’Sullivan Beara crossed the River Blackwater in 1603. This is part of the larger Beara Breifne walking route project.
‘I am pleased to confirm funding for both of these projects which will further improve Ireland’s tourism facilities. The new bridge on the Beara Breifne way marks the exact spot where O’Sullivan Beara crossed the river with his followers, and the overall route is a really exciting walking project which takes in all four provinces.’
The new bridge at Millstreet is a key link in the development of the Beara Breifne Way long-distance walking route which traces the 1602 march by Donal Cam, Chieftain of the O’Sullivan Beare clan, after the [read more …] “Funding for Blackwater Bridge approved”

Regional Report 1169 – 28th May 2013
by
Eily Buckley
Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1169 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this changeable Tuesday morning, the last one on May.
Another busy week has gone by, the weather was good and of the course the main task of the week was to prepare the Green Glens for the hosting of the International Sheep-Shearing Championships. St. John’s GAA Club excelled themselves.
And when the weekend came the place was afar cry from the way it looked the previous weekend for the 20th anniversary of EuroVision. It was all to do with sheep and their needs. Elevated stands made sure that the audience were able to see the experts at their work from their comfortable seating.
Trade Stands abounded , and there was every kind of bouncing castles , merries for the children. And Sheep Dog Trials. Tug o’ War. Dog Show
The crowd was not that big on Saturday but on Sunday they came in their thousands in brilliant sunshine, not that it mattered because there was ample room inside for it all.
Look up the website and get the feel of it with the lovely pictures taken by Sean Radley and others. The Community singers gave a recital and were very well received, The Show was officially opened by Weather Lady herself Nuala Carey aided by Cork Footballer Noel Lynch , Canon John FitzGerald also attended.

Obituary for Fr. Ned
On Friday , May 24th the death took place of Fr. Ned Corridan , a son of Knockmaol and more recently of Killarney. Fr. Ned was ordained in Maynooth in 1952 and spent a few years in Salford , England before taking up a short few appointments in Moyvane , Ballybunion , Tousist & Tralee.
In 1957 he was appointed to the staff at St Brendan’s College, Killarney where he remained until 1974. Many students will remember Fr. Ned as a Greek teacher. He had a great interest in the classics of Greek & Latin and was well versed in the writings of Homer.
In 1974, Fr. Ned was appointed as curate to Ballylongford Parish where he served for nine years, before crossing the County bounds to Millstreet where he served for thirteen years. He then had two short spells in Firies and Kenmare before his retirement in 2005.
Fr Ned was well respected as a tireless worker. He was diligent about home visitations, care of the housebound and visitation to Primary schools. His hobby was walking and he covered many miles every week. While he was a serious classical scholar, he had a way with words and a great sense of humour. He was a very sincere and dedicated priest and he will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtfulness in the Diocese of Kerry for fifty three years.
Removal of Fr. Ned’s remains took place on Sunday, May 26th to St Brigid’s Church, Duagh. Requiem mass was celebrated on Monday at 12 noon, with burial afterwards in Springmount Cemetery , Duagh…the resting place of his parents and hundreds of Corridans before him.
