Obituary for Fr. Ned

On Friday , May 24th the death took place of Fr. Ned Corridan , a son of Knockmaol and more recently of Killarney. Fr. Ned was ordained in Maynooth in 1952 and spent a few years in Salford , England before taking up a short few appointments in Moyvane , Ballybunion , Tousist & Tralee.

In 1957 he was appointed to the staff at St Brendan’s College, Killarney where he remained until 1974. Many students will remember Fr. Ned as a Greek teacher. He had a great interest in the classics of Greek & Latin and was well versed in the writings of Homer.

In 1974, Fr. Ned was appointed as curate to Ballylongford Parish where he served for nine years, before crossing the County bounds to Millstreet where he served for thirteen years. He then had two short spells in Firies and Kenmare before his retirement in 2005.

Fr Ned was well respected as a tireless worker. He was diligent about home visitations, care of the housebound and visitation to Primary schools. His hobby was walking and he covered many miles every week. While he was a serious classical scholar, he had a way with words and a great sense of humour. He was a very sincere and dedicated priest and he will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtfulness in the Diocese of Kerry for fifty three years.

Removal of Fr. Ned’s remains took place on Sunday, May 26th to St Brigid’s Church, Duagh. Requiem mass was celebrated on Monday at 12 noon, with burial afterwards in Springmount Cemetery , Duagh…the resting place of his parents and hundreds of Corridans before him. He is survived by his sister Peg and younger brother Tom (who resides in England) as well as his nieces and nephew and extended family

MAY HE REST IN PEACE

National Cycle Rás 2013 in Millstreet at Lunchtime Today

Great excitement in Millstreet today as the superbly fit participants in the 2013 National Cycle Rás passed through the centre of Millstreet at lunchtime with two leading cyclists. The main Rás was preceded by the very inspiring Charity Cycle. A grandfather with a Millstreet connection was given a royal welcome while the cyclists were served delicious refreshments by Millstreet G.A.A. and FÁS Staff. We shall have lots more pictures later and we got excellent interviews for LTV2 with Roy who worked with RTÉ conducting the introductions with stars of the cycling and G.A.A. world.   Click on the images to enlarge.   (S.R.)

This past week was extra special as we recalled events of our hosting the EuroVision Song contest twenty years ago. On Wednesday night people gathered at the Wallis Arms Hotel bringing with newspaper cuttings photographs and stories that they had saved since 1993 to share with their friends.

On Friday night a EuroVision style Caraoke Contest was held at the same venue and a great time was had by all. Many congratulations to the lovely Muireann Buckley who was successful and also Brian O Leary was also declared a winner  in another category..

Millstreet Celtic 5 Grangevale 1

We beat Grangevale 5-1 in the town park to ensure our survival in division 1 for next season. We were poor in the 1st half and went behind in the 20th min. Chances were hard to come by until in the 45th min Shane Dineen won the ball in the tackle and fed Donagh Murphy. Murphy played a ball into the feet of Paul Dawson who controlled it well and fired home at the near post. The goal gave us a bit lift and we took the lead 5 mins into the 2nd half. Dineen played in Tadhg Collins who held off the defender and finished well. We had a number of chances after that but had to wait until the 75th min to get the third. A long ball sent Collins clear again and he slotted home for his 2nd if the day. Just 5 mins later he [read more …] “Millstreet Celtic 5 Grangevale 1”

Millstreet Methodist Update

Services continue every Sunday night at 6.30 p. m. meeting in Drishane Castle (kindly granted) these meetings are open to everyone, not just residents of Drishane.

Also we are excited about plans for our mid-week Bible Group to move to more public premises in the town centre. From Tuesday 21st May this group will meet at
8.00 p. m. at the new Millstreet “Enterprise Centre” right on the town square. These are informal meetings when we gather to discuss the Bible together. They are open to anyone and everyone. A great way to find out more about the Bible and grow in faith. It would be great to see you there. <email>
