by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1176 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this beautiful balmy Tuesday morning.

The long awaited documentery on the Bearra Way and Donal Cam O Sullivan was very well received on RTE 1 on Sunday evening at 6.30. Both Sean Radley and I were delighted that Millstreet got such fine coverage. And those who missed it can log in to RTE’s website, enter the title and it can be viewed anytime..

Millstreet is taking a well earned break following our highly successful Gathering Festival, and there’s a note here from Veronica Perdistat as follows-

Millstreet Development’s Gathering Committee would like to thank everyone who supported the recent Summer Festival.

We were blessed with good weather and very appreciative of the help and assistance from across the community.

It really was a Community Gathering for both young and old and we hope that our families, friends and visitors enjoyed the four days of events.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish the other communities in the Duhallow region who are hosting events that they also have a safe and successful celebration. I have a poster from Boherbue to say that they are holding their Gathering Festival in August from the 2nd to the 4th. with a wide range of events to pack every moment. Please look up their posters and get ready to help or join in.  [read more …] “Regional Report 1176 – 16th July 2013”

Willowbrook – a flawed Eden. A memoir of growing up in Millstreet

2013-07-16 Willowbrook - a Flawed Eden - Book Cover“Willowbrook – a flawed Eden. A memoir of growing up in Millstreet, Co. Cork” by Jim O’Brien is the latest publication from the Aubane Historical Society.

The author was evacuated with his brothers from London during WWII and they were sent to live with their aunts at Willowbrook House in Cloghboolabeg.

He paints a very vivid picture of his experiences at the house, of the people who owned and lived there and of those who worked there. He also gives entertaining pen-pictures of the local ‘characters’ he got to know. He describes them ‘warts and all’ and they are thereby made unforgettable.

Like all good stories it operates at many levels – the story of children separated from their parents and the effects this had on both; the issue of property relations within families and its consequences for individual members, particularly women; the relations between men and women, sexual and otherwise; the relations between adults and children; the class distinctions that were prevalent at the time and the consequences of this.

All the farm activities are well described with the attendant social activities that brought people together and showed the [read more …] “Willowbrook – a flawed Eden. A memoir of growing up in Millstreet”

lovely pups free to good homes

THREE 5 MONTH OLD TERRIER CROSS PUPS FREE TO LOVING HOMES. I’ve found homes for 3, but have had no luck with the remainder. There’s 1 boy and 2 girls – they’re almost completely black, small, very cute, clever and playful, are showing signs of making good hunters like their mother. I hate to let them go, but can’t afford to keep them as I have the mother and another dog already. They’re vaccinated and wormed and ready for a new home. Thanks for taking time to read this.

Genealogy: McNamara’s over the Post Office

I am a Benedictine nun writing from the USA, and I was hoping to be in touch with someone who knows anything of the family of my great grandfather, Jeremiah McNamara who emigrated to the USA and settled in Boston late 19th, early 20th century.

My father, now deceased, told me that his ancestors lived in Millstreet, County Cork, above the Post Office. However, the sister of his grandfather was born in Macroom.

Her name was Mary and her parents, Daniel and Margaret McNamara, came to Boston with their five sons and five daughters. Mary (Sr. Rosalie Josephine) became a Little Sister of the Poor in Jamaica Plain, Boston, but died in the motherhouse in London, England.

I have put in this query to the folks in Macroom as well.

Thank you so much for any hints you may have!

The heat was a killer but i kept riding

2013-07-07 Ian Redmond rounds the corner by the GAA Hall in the Cycle Race during the Gathering Festival in Millstreet

Fermoy cyclist Ian Redmond wrote a piece
in his blog about his trip in the Race at the Millstreet Gathering Festival:

“… The race beg an after the u16 race had finished. It was so hot i was thinking how long would i last in the heat but that never came into my mind again. I jumped away early on after the start to see would i get a gap but i didn’t get much of a gap. One limerick guy came with me but after few 100ms we were caught. I stayed up around the front for most of the race and stayed active. We had a 3 min lead on the cat1&2s at the start but they would eventually catch us only the first  6 who got away would. A lot of riders tried going up the road but i think the heat was getting to them and no one was getting a reasonable gap who ever jumped up the road. They would stay out for a bit but would come back into the bunch. The road surface was quite good. Just after the finish line going down a small drag it was a bit rough but it was grand other than that.

On lap 5 Paidi O’Brien and 5 others joined us and a category 3 rider ended up doing a tumble into the ditch. I never saw him again. Hope he … [read the full article on Ian’s blog ianredmondcycling.com]

American Author visiting Millstreet this week

A very welcome visitor to Millstreet this week is Rebekah Ruth with JoshuaAmerican author and blogger of Irish descent, Rebekah Ruth. She is visiting the “real” Irish town that inspired the setting for her first novel Where the Pink Houses Are. Released in 2011, the novel took place in the fictional “Millway” where the author’s ability to conjure up the scenes were based on good old-fashioned imagination, and a bit of Google.

In her first trip to Ireland, Ruth intends to use her visit to Millstreet to follow where the first story left off and launch, in earnest, her second novel.  She is thrilled to be staying in one of Millstreet’s gracious B&B’s; a home base for her visit this July.   “I will actually be able to infuse the real town into my book. I will have a feel for the “personality” of the place. It will still be fiction. But it will feel so much more real to me…and hopefully to my readers!” says Ruth.  A full description of her decision to make this first trip to Ireland is in her blog post from last May. Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a Cairde and welcome to News Report 1175 from Millstreet.Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this glorious Tuesday morning.

Well it’s all over and it will go down in History as one of our finest achievements. The Four day Gathering Festival was an outstanding success,to put it mildly. I suppose the first one to thank is God himself for sending the beautiful weather which brought every body young and old out to get the feel of the warm sun and to take part.

Over 20 events took place over the four days and each just as good as the one before it. Our website is full of pictures telling the full story of it all. One event which was not on the list was the All Ireland Fishing Championships which brought fishermen from the four provinces. The top prize going to Ulster.
