You recall the wonderfully memorable Blackberry at Dooneen feature we posted a few days ago - Well, the excellent follow-up emerged yesterday evening when I found a marvellous jar of delicious Blackberry and Apple Jam waiting for me at the door - the result of Mary Healy's enthusiastic picking of a superb amount of fresh and sweet blackberries. Straight away - a mighty spread of the splenidly tasty jam onto fresh brown bread. Mmmmmm Magnifique! A million thanks to Mary for her very kind generosity....and now for another slice of that great jam/bread combination! (S.R.)

DOS (Before Windows) Computer Sought

  • We’ve had a request from a loyal Millstreet website visitor – This person would very much appreciate it if a DOS Computer was available by anyone.   This would be a pre-1995 Computer before the Windows format.   To operate equipment which this person wishes to use it’s necessary to have a DOS (Direct Operating System I think it means) type Computer which is not as fast as the later Windows format.   If you feel you may be able to help in the provision of this Computer please get in touch with us here at the Millstreet website or email millstreetmuseum @eircom.net – Many thanks.  (S.R.)

Very Pleasant Unexpected Blackberry Treat at Dooneen – Autumn 2013

On a recent cycle around the Glebe Route I came across a dedicated Crew taking a break from a hard day’s work saving silage. And then we met Mary Healy picking blackberries to make delicious jam. Mary very kindly (as is usual for Mary who is always so generous to everyone)  treated us all to a feast of wonderful blackberries. For me it truly brought back fond childhood memories.   Click on the images to enlarge.   (S.R.)

Four Millstreet Related RTÉ Television References Today!

Yes – Four references to Millstreet related themes today.   Firstly, Annmarie O’Riordan gave one of the best ever renditions of  “Amhrán na bhFiann” in Croke Park this afternoon before the Mayo v. Tyrone Football Semi-final.   [see the video below]    Secondly,  on the RTÉ News we saw and heard Millstreet Pipe Band as well as,  thirdly, Cameraman supreme, Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV from Carriganima – all at the Annual Béal na mBláth Commemoration.  Fourthly, on the News also – it was indicated that the United Nations in conjunction with Universities are to award €50,000.00 for research into the creation of the Robot which Joanne O’Riordan requested when she gave her superb address to the United Nations in New York some time ago.   Also today at Millstreet Country Park – Francis and John Brennan with their Television Crew spent a very fruitful day recording at the very popular Bike Fest for their very popular television series “At Your Service”.    We’re presently preparing a full feature of this very special day at Millstreet Country Park…and will soon be uploading on our website.   (S.R.)

Well done to the Cork Juniors tonight on winning the All Ireland, and especially to Millstreet men Michael Vaughan and Kevin Crowley who are both in the Cork squad. Michael came on in the second half as Cork fended off a stiff challenge from Kildare to take the title on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-7 [match reports: GAA.ie, Evening Echo]

… and hopefully Mark Ellis can pick up the All Ireland Senior Hurling medal in two weeks time.

Blackwater Trip for Six Boatmen Ends Successfully in Youghal on Thursday Afternoon

Many thanks to Eileen O’Riordan of Dromsicane for informing us that the six courageous boatmen who began their adventure at the Boeing on the River Blackwater on Monday morning ended their enjoyable but challenging trip successfully as they arrived in Youghal early on Thursday afternoon (22nd August 2013).  They had a great adventure but it was hard work the first day with the water so low.   The six men enjoyed our website feature regarding their very interesting adventure.     (S.R.)

Fascinating pre-1894 picture of Andreae Shop at Main Street, Millstreet

We extend sincere thanks to Maurice Buckley of Cork
We extend sincere thanks to Maurice Buckley of Cork for this absolutely magnificent picture of the Andreae Sisters’ Shop in Main Street, Millstreet taken before 1894.   Maurice also very kindly provided (below) excellent background information regarding the picture and also in regard to the history of the Andreae Family in Millstreet.  Click on the image to enlarge.   (S.R.)

Maurice Buckley writes:  “The man in the photograph is likely to be Agustus Andreae the owner of the shop and some of his daughters.
Agustus inherited the shop from his mother (a widow) after she died 31/03/1858.

Agustus married Catherine Dennehy (a shop assistant from Millstreet in 1880) and they  had 5 daughters, and a son:

  • Margarita Maria born 12/9/1883,
  • Brigida Maria 13/10/1885,
  • Sophia Maria 14/5/1888,
  • Maria 9/5/1890,
  • Ellena Maria 29/03/1892.
  • Gululmus (William) Joseph Andreae, but he died aged 6 months.

The girls were known, as far as I know, as Margaret, Bridget, Sophie, May,and Elsie.   None of them married.

Agustus had 2 sisters Margaret and Sophie Andreae:

  • Sophie was my great grandmother who married Maurice Quinlan and lived in Kingwilliamstown (Ballydesmond). Maurice died on Feb 9th 1890 in Kingwilliamstown, son David present at death. [1901 census]. [1911] [1911 Sophie  in Newcastle West]. Sophie died in September 23rd 1916 in Newmarket.
  • Margaret never married but looked after the 5 girls after their mother died in 1908. Agustus predeceased his wife Catherine on 28/03/1894.

The original Andreaes who came to Millstreet were 2 brothers – William and Augusta.   Both were German Lutherans. They came around middle to late 1830s.   William was married to Margaret Browne said to be from the Castleisland area they were married in London in 1835.

The other brother Augusta never married and served in the local church of St. Anna’s (in Pound Hill) as Church Warden 1860-1875.

Together they started a bakery etc. and it appears business grew from there.   William died in 1844 aged 36 and is buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery as he became Catholic after the birth of their first child.

Augusta died in 1884 and is buried in St. Anna’s Cemetery in Pound Hill, Millstreet.”

——–

Epitath on headstone in St.Patrick’s Church Cemetery: “Erected in memory of Augustus Andreae who died 28th march 1894 aged 52 years. Also his beloved child William aged 6 months and to his young mother Margaret Andreae who died 31st May 1858 age 49 years”. The grave is at the very back corner behind the sacrastry (full details on HistoricGraves.com)

Some of the Andreae children were sent to study in Padraig Pearse’s school Scoil Éanna in Dublin (from ‘Ready Willing Waiting: Keale Millstreet Mushera, Rathduane Irish Volunteers 1916’, page 19)
