Fancy Dress Main Feature Delayed Until November

Here we feature the three winning entries plus one of the many very colourful groups who participated in Friday night's Annual Fancy Dress event at the Wallis Arms Hotel, Millstreet. Usually we feature lots more images from the consistently enjoyable occasion....and this we shall again do this year but because we've used up most of our bandwidth allocation for October we shall have to wait until the beginning of November to share a much fuller feature of images. Apologies for this delay but it was due to a temporary technical problem which is corrected for future months. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)

The Deceased Characters Of Millstreet Parish

The deceased characters of Millstreet Parish amongst the dead may lay
But in Duhallow around the Cork and Kerry border memories of them live today
Distinctive individuals they had ways of their own
And as characters in their own lifetimes they were loved and well known

A beloved character of Millstreet Town the well liked Jerry Shea
And one can truly say of him a big man in every way
He was such fun with a few beers in laughter he did provoke
And it truly can be said of him that he was a good bloke

For Michael Murphy better known as ‘Mick Punk’ one must go back in time
To more than fifty years ago long before i reached my prime

1893 Ceremonial Trowel

1893 Ceremonial Trowel from the start of work on Millstreet Boys School - from Cannon Griffin to Miss Madeline McCarthy O'LearyA fascinating item from Millstreet’s history has appeared on eBay this week, courtesy of a high quality antique dealer in England – Pushkin Antiques. It’s a ceremonial trowel presented to Miss Madeline McCarthy O’Leary by Cannon Griffin, on the occasion of laying the foundation stone at the Male School in 1893.

The school in question was located across from the Catholic Presbtry on the Clara Road.

The trowel is 925 standard silver purity. Due to it’s historic value and being made from silver, it’s retailing at £1,955 so it is way outside of the budget of Millstreet Museum.

Page 16 of “Notes of the History of Millstreet” talks about schools in Millstreet, but makes [read more …] “1893 Ceremonial Trowel”
