Plans are well in place for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Parades which will be held in Carriganima on Sunday next March 16th and in Millstreet town on the Feast of our Patron Saint Monday March 17th which is a Holy Day of Obligation. Our people are already decorating the places, parades will start in Carriganima at 3pm on Sunday and at 5pm in Millstreet on Monday. There is a wide range of categories and prizes galore for the best in each. Free face painting, and street entertainment. And lots more not least among them our own Pipe Band.
There’s a Community Council Meeting at the Wallis Arms Hotel to finalise
plans for the Parade. Starts at 9.
Sullane Sessions at the Briery Gap
Currently running at the Briery Gap, Macroom are the “Sullane Sessions”, a new series of intimate gigs highlighting the best in national and international singer songwriters.
The series kicked off on Saturday 24th May with the enchanting Katie Kim and support from Joan Shelley, and continues on June 13th with Oliver Cole & Guests The Shaker Hymn, 25th July with Daniel Martin Moore & Guests Jackson Dyer & Ghost Town Jenny, and 23rd August with John Blek & The Rats, with further dates to be announced.
Following an extensive renovation programme in 2013, including a state of the art lighting and sound system, new theatre seating and refurbished Theatre Bar, Briery Gap has focused on delivering a broad and diverse programme of events. According to Ann Dunne, Manager of Briery Gap, “The Sullane Sessions series will be a fantastic addition to the theatre and will attract yet another new audience to Briery Gap, further demonstrating our commitment to attracting the best in musical talent”

The Maiden Aunt
Ahakeera Drama Group present “The Maiden Aunt”. Gertie, has been in hospital for some time but is now coming to stay with her niece, Mary, who attempts to get her hands on Gertie’s money. With many twists and turns this is a must see, hilarious play! This event takes places on Friday 14th of March at 8.00pm at the Briery Gap Theatre in Macroom.

Celebrating Pancake Tuesday 2014 at Rathcoole Playschool
Very successful Games Day held at Millstreet Community School
A most enjoyable afternoon of games took place on Monday 3rd March in Millstreet Community School library between 2-4pm. It was organised by the Transition Year SVP Youth for Justice group and adults of all ages were invited to take part. Games played included scrabble, monopoly, jenga, draughts and a variety of card games. Refreshments included a beautiful selection of home baked buns and cakes provided by the participants. Clonbanin Ambush
On this day March 5th 1921, the IRA ambushed a British army convoy near Clonbanin, near Derinagree, killing Brigadier General H. R. Cumming, one of the highest ranked British officers to die in the Irish War of Independence. After two hours fighting, 13 (apparently) British were dead, and 15 wounded, while the republicans suffered no casualties.

In early March, 1921 Sean Moylan, Commandant of the Newmarket Column, made the decision to ambush a British party of senior officers and their military guard returning from an inspection tour in Kerry. The position he selected was at Clonbanin, near Derinagree, which was about five miles from Kanturk, where there was a strong military post and five miles north of Millstreet, then garrisoned by a force of Black and Tans and RIC.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1208 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this calm but cold Tuesday morning, the first one in March, with a hint of snow on the distant hills.
The annual March fair was held in the town on Sunday, in fair weather thoughthe crowd was noticeably down. Our camera men have captured over sixty images of the Fair, look them up on the Web.
Our annual St Patricks Day Parade falls on a Monday this year. Already some of our shops have dressed their places for the big event and others are urged to follow suit.
This year our town looks all new and beautiful, thanks to the great improvement work that was carried out in the town square. The new seating giving an air of welcome and relaxation, so please be ready in good time , to take part in the Parade.
Out in Carriganima they will have their Parade on Sunday March 16th.
And thanks to our Website our St Patricks Day activities will be on show around the World.

Catering at the European Juggling Championships
The organisers of the European Juggling Championships which take place in Millstreet from the 19th to the 27th of July 2014, are seeking food vendors to supply food on site for the EJC festival.
These are the sort of numbers they’re talking about:
- Customers who live on site for the entire week and require 3 meals a day, as well as snacks and drinks. Day-trippers also attend.
- Anticipated attendance of 1,500-2,500 jugglers.

Death Notice: Jeremiah Cronin, Cullen
The death has occurred of Jeremiah Cronin, of Oxford and late of Knockduff, Cullen, who passed away on 21st February. Reposing at Tarrant’s Funeral Home, Millstreet on Wednesday from 6.30pm with removal at 8pm to Millstreet Church. Requiem Mass on Thursday at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Millstreet.

Joshua’s Six Tae Kwon-Do Medals
Joshua O’Sullivan, Ballydaly pictured with his Instructor Master Don Dalton at the TaeKwan-do tournament held in Tralee on Sunday March 3rd.
Joshua scooped a very impressive 6 medals. He competed in his own category – 10 years – and also in the 11 years. The categories were Sparring, Tul and High Kick.
Master Dalton’s training sessions are held in the the GAA hall Millstreet on Friday evenings.

MonsterMac Adventure Race
Join Ireland’s unique adventure race on Saturday 26th April 2014. With a varied mix of challenging on road biking, off road running and a short kayak section, it is set to get the hearts racing on either the 64km MonsterMAC EXPERT category, the somewhat shorter 33km BigMAC SPORT category or the 20km “BabyMAC” event which is achievable by anyone looking for their first ever adventure challenge.

Cake Sale – Thank you for supporting this event
A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported the cake sale that took place in Millstreet GAA Hall last night (1st March) and this morning after 11.30am Mass. A total of €538.50 was raised. As a result, the €4000 target to cover the travel and accommodation costs of the six students who are going to Lourdes as helpers at Easter with the IHCPT – The Irish Pilgrimage Trust, has now been reached! Thank you to everyone who has supported the students in their efforts over the last few months. We wish them well for their week in Lourdes. J. Magee
