Surprise Hayfield Whirlwind at Mount Leader on Wednesday Evening

2014-06-18 16.28 Hay Whirlwind at Clara Road - photo by Niall Murphy
Niall Murphy sent us this photo of the hay flying around up high which he took with his phone, that confirms the presence of a Mini Whirlwind at 16.28pm yesterday in Mount Leader – click the photo to see the detail.

To describe what occurred at Mount Leader, Millstreet on Wednesday, 18th June 2014 at 5pm approximately there is an excellent similar incident on YouTube  www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FSsSN2JJAw . But back to our very own Millstreet Whirlwind!  Below we feature a series of images in the aftermath of the Hayfield Whirlwind at Mount Leader off Clara Road.  Joe Roche and his dedicated co-workers witnessed the developing whirlwind which occurred in the field where they were baling hay – just at the rear of my own home.   Suddenly a surprise whirlwind lifted lots of hay which rose very high into the air and travelled over a number of houses in the direction of the K&L Complex depositing hay on driveways, roofs, gardens and roads.   Some of the residents who witnessed the brief occurrence found it utterly surprising and somewhat frightening.  Fortunately no harm was done but many people had to get the rakes and brushes to tidy up in its aftermath!  We met Mary Dempsey from Galway who works at Alps Electric Ireland and she also had hay evidence that the whirlwind also passed close to the Alps Complex.   So from the Funnel Cloud of some weeks past  (so splendidly photographed by Ola Cashman) to yesterday evening’s Hay Whirlwind one wonders what’s next?!   And now enjoy our recording of the rare occurrence even though nobody seems to have recorded the actual whirlwind …but we have the aftermath right down to when the hayfield with its many bales returned to its peaceful setting and we were treated to a truly superb sunset as we approach the longest day of the year on Saturday.  And we guess that at least enough hay for one bale or  more of hay travelled far from the field.  Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Why this Whirlwind should have happened  may be the result of the hottest day this year experienced on Wednesday and the unusual cloud formation at the time of the occurrence…perhaps.   Here are some more pictures of the event which caused much conversation in [read more …] “Surprise Hayfield Whirlwind at Mount Leader on Wednesday Evening”

Conor Hartnett teaching Soccer in Rio de Janeiro

2014-06-10 Conor Hartnett with Carlao and kids at their concrete pitch in RioSays Conor: ‘‘FIFA is doing a great job taking the game away from the people.’’ Two years ago, Irish-born Conor had an epiphany. After finishing work as a business analyst at Westpac in Kent Street, Sydney, he needed to kill time before training with Balmain Old Boys, who play in the Canterbury league. He typed ‘‘round-the-world ticket’’ into Google and volunteering abroad came up. ‘‘Guys, I’m moving to Rio,’’ he told his teammates when he arrived at training that night.
Conor, 39, now partners with two organisations in Rio. IASESPE, with which he helps children aged between three and 14, and Carlao’s Football Project, which involves a hundred kids.

Injury Curtails Another Good Performance by Mark

2014-06-15 Mark Ellis is helped off due to injury near the end of the Cork v Clare Munster Senior Hurling SemiFinalMark Ellis had another really good game at #6 for Cork hurlers yesterday against All Ireland Champions Clare in the Munster Semi-Final.

He didn’t seen as much on the ball as last week, but the amount of tracking he did of Clare runners through the middle of the defence was great to see, and it snuffed out one of Clare’s most dangerous tactics (which is how Clare took Cork apart last year). In fact he seemed to spend as much time behind his own full back line as out in his centre back position.

But two minutes from the end he was injured in a collision with Aidan Walsh as he was catching a ball. Thankfully the injury’s not too bad … in a press release this evening the County Board have said:

“Following assessment by the medical team, Mark Ellis has been diagnosed with [read more …] “Injury Curtails Another Good Performance by Mark”

The Rathcoole Ambush – June 16th 1921

2014-06-16 Monument at the site of the Rathcoole ambushOne of the largest ambushes of the War of Independence took place at Rathcoole, North Cork, situated between Millstreet and Banteer, on 16th. June 1921.

The railway line between Banteer and Millstreet had been cut in several places so the Auxiliary forces based at Millstreet had to travel to Banteer by road for their supplies a couple of times every week. Therefore, a combined force of 130 men were mobilised to attack the Auxiliaries as they returned from Banteer. The volunteers were from the Millstreet, Kanturk, Newmarket, Charleville and Mallow battalion columns in the second division area and were under the command of Paddy O’Brien from Liscarroll.

On the night before the ambush the I.R.A. volunteers slept at Rathcoole Wood, which overlooked the planned ambush position. Shortly after sunrise the following morning, Captain Dan Vaughan laid six landmines on the [read more …] “The Rathcoole Ambush – June 16th 1921”
