Colman Cloran’s Wonderful Video Song Regarding Michael Commins

Many thanks to Colman Cloran and to Michael Fitzgerald of Star Trax Studio for sharing this superb feature just launched.   Michael Commins is a Midwest Radio Presenter Supreme and also does a hugely popular Country & Western Feature in the weekly “Farmers’ Journal”.  We are delighted that Michael Fitzgerald has decided to use a selection of still images which William Fitzgerald and I took when visiting Michael Commins’s Studio a few short years ago.  Well done to Colman on composing such an excellent song and for performing it with such great feeling as he also did when he appeared recently at the Salthill Hotel in Galway at the Michael Commins Music Festival before an enormous capacity audience.   (S.R.)

Magnificent Christmas Nativity Play by Presentation N.S.

Presentation N.S. truly impressed the capacity congregation at St. Patrick's Church on Monday night with its wonderfully superb production of its Christmas Nativity Play. by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News report 1245 from Millstreet.  Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this cold and frosty Tuesday Morning.

First thing this morning I want to thank the ever reliable, Sean Radley for stepping in for me last week.

Our town is taking on a real Christmas atmostphere as we enter the month of December. The lovely tree in the town Square looks even lovelier this year with all the newly planted trees around it lit up as well in matching blue lights.

The tree is lovingly erected every year by polish young man whose name is Majic. And even though he is about to go back to his own country following ten years working locally, he vows to come back to Millstreet every year to erect our Christmas tree. Many thanks Majic. And every good wish for a Happy Christmas to you and Anna and little Simon.

O’Leary’s Family Butcher’s newly refurbished store is bright and colourful in the same area.

Tony of the popular Craft Burchers, always at the ready to please while across the street by  our SuperValu store the popular Aroma Café has reopened just in time to greet the steady stream of Christmas shoppers and provide them with a restful cup of coffee or a sustaining meal.

At the other end of town Herlihy’s Centra store is brightly lit and at the entrance to our Town Park the Water Fountain got a Christmas facelift by way of new lighting and decorations. [read more …] “Regional Report 1245 – 2nd December”

Eoghan McKenna

Eoghan McKennaOver the years, many of us would have seen or heard of one of ireland’s greatest actresses Siobhán Mc Kenna, but not many would know that her father Eoghan was born in Millstreet. This extract is from her papers which have been catalogued and archived by NUI Galway

Biographical History: McKenna, Siobhán (1922–86), actor and theatre director, was born 24 May 1922 at 28 St James’s Park, off the Falls Road, Belfast, Co. Antrim, the second daughter of Margaret (Gretta) O’Reilly from Loch Gamhna, Co. Longford, and her husband, Eoghan McKenna (b. Millstreet, Co. Cork, 1892) lecturer in mathematical physics at the Municipal College of Technology, Belfast…

Born on December 13th 1891 at the Main Street, Millstreet … (please read the comment below which has a detailed biography of Eoghan)

His first teaching post was at the Municipal College, Belfast, and it was there that his daughters Nancy [1919] and Siobhán [1922] were born.
In 1928 the family moved to Shantalla, Galway, following his appointment to University College Galway, where Eoghan was a lecturer in Mathematical Physics (through Irish) until 1933, when he was made Professor of Mathematical Sciences – (from tcd.ie). He trained UCG to Singerson Cup glory in 1941, and was still heavily involved in their 1960 win.

Eóghan died on January 29th 1967: – “(10 Mar 1967). Also letter from Siobhán McKenna, Highfield road, Rathgar, Dublin 6, to Mark [Rudkin] saying that she has been told by “himself” to write to Mark. She apologises for not writing sooner as her father had died in Galway over the Christmas.” He is buried in Rahoon Cemetery in Galway with his wife Mairead and daughter Siobhán (see the headstone below)
“…and, as he wished, his coffin was carried to Rahoon on the shoulders of the great Galway footballers of the fifties and sixties, many of whom had known him as one of their greatest supporters in the Sigerson Cup and All-Ireland Championships’” – ainm.ie

EOGHAN MacCIONNAITH

Eoghan MacCionnaith, M.A., A.R.C.Sc.I., who died in Galway yesterday, was a former professor of mathematical physics in U.C.G., and was the father of Siobhan McKenna, the actress.
Born in Kanturk, Co. Cork, he taught in Cork and Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, at The Pines, now Garbally Diocesan College, and in Belfast before being appointed in U.C.G., in 1928, as lecturer in mathematics through Irish.
In 1934, he was appointed professor of mathematical physics and supervisor of examinations, and he held both posts until he retired from the College in 1961.
Since 1928 he was president of the G.A.A. club of the college, and through his work in that capacity the resurgence of Gaelic football in Connaught was mainly due.
He is survived by his wife and, in addition to Siobhan (Mrs. Denis O’Dea), another daughter, Mrs. Patrick McMahon (Dublin); his brothers, John, in Cork, and Peadar, in Dun Laoghaire; and by four sisters, the Rev. Mother Bonaventure (Convent of Mercy, Cork), Mrs. Sean Shorten, Cork, Mrs. Sean McCurtin (Dublin), and Miss Henrietta McKenna (London).

94th Kilmichael Commemoration address by Jack Lane

2014-11-30 Kilmichael Commemoration (from @pjom72)

94th KILMICHAEL COMMEMORATION

Address by Jack Lane, Aubane Historical Society, 30th November 2014

I want to thank the Committee for giving me an opportunity to address this commemoration here today. The ambush that occurred here was a pivotal event in the War of Independence and it is a privilege to be involved in a commemoration of such an event. It changed the character of that war because after it all involved realised that this was a real war and the Crown Forces realised for the first time that they were up against a competent army because they were thoroughly defeated. It concentrated their minds wonderfully. Nothing like it had happened before in that war.

Anyone who takes an interest in our history will know that there is an ongoing debate about the War of Independence and it is appropriate that this Ambush has been central to this debate.  The Ambush has been the subject of [read more …] “94th Kilmichael Commemoration address by Jack Lane”

Millstreet Athletic Club News

Over the past month Millstreet Athletic Club has been represented at the Munster Cross Country Championships held in Tipperary, Clare and Carrig na Bhfear

by Emma Lehane, Donal Bourke, Donnacha Murphy, Orla Buckley, Caoimhe O’Leary and Dan Bourke.

The club recorded great results in all age groups and are delighted that Caoimhe O’Leary will represent the club and county at National level in the All-Ireland cross country Championships in Dublin next weekend in the Girls U15 race.

It is a fantastic achievement for Caoimhe and we wish her the very best of luck and also to Billy Cronin of Knocknakilla who will also be representing Cork in Dublin next weekend.

Dan Gould

I remember Dan Gould as an ageing man
He was then in the twilight of his lifetime span
He lived near Millstreet Town up the Cloghoula way
The passing of time had left him looking gray

He was a great road bowler in his life’s prime
One of the best in Cork and Ireland going way back in time
Till the biological clock did become his foe
He lived his last day many Seasons ago

Feeder Schools

Today’s Sunday Independent published the full list of feeder schools for all third level colleges in the country, and for each the Secondary School it lists where and how many of their students went to third level education. Millstreet Community School students fared very well in this survey, but in reality one should take the list with a pinch of salt, because as most people know, there’s much more to education than just how many go on to college.
