In this House of Brede
In December 1974 there was an air of excitement in Millstreet as filming for part of the movie “In this House of Brede” took place at Drishane Castle. Adapted by James Costigan from the best-selling novel by Rumer Godden, In This House of Brede stars Diana Rigg (of the Avengers fame) as a widowed, fortyish business executive in search of a more meaningful life. She turns her back on the world of commerce and capitalism to enter a strict order of Benedictine nuns at Brede Abbey. Here, the peace of mind that Rigg seeks remains elusive, especially when her fidelity to her vows is questioned by the younger novices. Filmed on location at genuine convents in London and Ireland, In This House of Brede premiered February 27, 1975.
Above is a ten minute shortened version of the film, while below are some photos, and interesting extracts from newspapers. [read more …] “In this House of Brede”

Ellen O’Mullane, Gneeves, Dies at an Extraordinary Age
“Extraordinary Age. In a recent issue we chronicled the death of the oldest person in Ireland at Gneeves, four miles from Millstreet, County Cork. Mrs. Ellen O’Mullane. the deceased, was born in Ballyvourney in the year 1783. ‘ Her father, Timothy Cronin. belonged to a respectable family of farmers in the neighbourhood of Millstreet. The deceased, at the age of 35, married a farmer named O’Mullane, who died forty-three years ago. She had three daughters, who are living, the eldest being 82 years old, 25 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren, some of whom are in Canada. She was a woman of robust frame and vigorous constitution. Her chief pride was to boast that she was never a day sick during her long life, although working hard. Food Collection For Cork Penny Dinners
Sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to Anna’s Food Collection for Penny Dinners. We are delighted with the response.
We delivered another bootload on Saturday and the staff at the centre were amazed at the volume of food that we had for them. Their premises is tiny so storage is very limited but they assured me that they would make room for everything. We will be able to do another delivery this week thanks to the generosity of all in Millstreet Community School.
Two years ago, Cork Penny Dinners was serving approx. 150 meals per week. It now provides over 1000 meals per week so all donations are greatly appreciated.
Food collection boxes are in place in Guys & Dolls Hair Salon, Coleman’s Centra, SuperValu and Millstreet Community School. Please keep giving. We will continue to deliver the food as long as the collection boxes are filling up.
Many thanks to Mary Murphy of Guys & Dolls, Mary & John Coleman and the staff of Coleman’s Centra, Joe Fitzgerald and the staff of SuperValu and Gerard Ryan of MCS for facilitating this collection. Any local businesses wishing to donate or get involved can contact 087 6886725.
Thanks for your support!
