Regional Report 1248 – 6th January 2015
by
Eily Buckley
Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1248 from Millstreet. Fondest Greetings dear readers and welcome to 2015.
The mild weather over the Christmas period saw to it that every planned event and function went ahead as planned. Our Church services were a joy and very well attended throughout in all three churches. with a marked increase in the number of those attending confessions.
The Christmas Day Climb of Mushera Mountain drew great crowds. As did the New Years Day dip in the cold and swollen waters of the mighty Blackwater. All raising much needed funds for needy causes.
Because of the favourable weather, many people took to walking the developed and signposted treks on Clara Mountain and beyond, were enjoyed by a marked increase of people at Christmas time.
The fifth annual Little Womens Christmas Party organised by Mairead Daly was an outstanding success on Friday night last, and again raised money for those who are affected by cancer.

Most Extraordinary Evidence (1850)
That fact is stronger than fiction, is fully verified in the following true case of Irish ingenuity, in which the ferocious and the absurd are curiously blended. At the present sessions now holding in Mallow an unhappy wretch was indicted for stealing turnips from the field of Mr. Leader of Millstreet, in this county, the principal witness being the watchman, known familiarly as “Mad Tom Eagar.” The attorney who defended the prisoner as “the length of himself,” but upon being further pressed he coolly said – “Didn’t I know what the attorney would be at, and what he’d try to make me swear! Faith I did so, and when I caught the prisoner I knocked him down and took out my knife and cut off a piece of his ear, that I might match it, next day.” This terrific statement was mournfully corroborated by the prisoner in the dock, who turned his mutilated ear to the bench, crying out at the same time in a piteous tone – “Oh! wisha, me lord, sure enuf he did crap me!” The worthy assistant-barrister, who was justly horrified at the act, vented his indignation in the strongest terms, and expressed a wish that he had the witness in the dock, but the witness seemed to look upon this startling mode of procuring conclusive testimony as entitling him to a civic crown instead of meriting a judicial reprimand.– Cork Examiner April 1850.
Celebrating Women’s Little Christmas at Wallis Arms Hotel
Highlights of the special occasion were recorded by LTV2 and some of the video footage (William) and digital images (Seán) are expected to be used on TV3 to illustrate Mairéad’s discussion. The meal provided by the Wallis Arms was superb and a true credit to the very dedicated Staff and Management. “Back on Track” (Pat and Danny) provided excellent musical entertainment. Our Stats for 2014
In 2014 millstreet.ie again had an increased in visitors to all parts of the site (we do wonder, but it shows no sign of stopping).
There were over 1.1 million page views across the year. It works out at 3,044 views a day on average from about 2,000 distinct (human) visitors. The pageviews are up from 933k in 2013 and have been rising every year since we were first recording them in 2009. Our home page was again by far the most popular page viewed with 714 thousand views over the year, as it really is the centre of the site.
We have about 2,500 Facebook followers, 264 Twitter followers, 100 subscribed to emails, but most of the visitors to the site now appear to be just regular visitors which is nice to see.
So, to those that are now putting articles up themselves (Seán, Hannelie, Bernard, John, and Rebbecca), regular contributors (Eily, and Sharon), to the countless people who shared news, photos, notices, and anything else with us, and to everyone who visited the site to keep up with the news and happenings … we’d just like to say Thank You, because without you we’re nothing, and we’d be a little less without any one of you.

Paddy Healy
With his wife Peg they raised their children at Claramore before moving to Murphy’s Terrace
The quiet man with few words to say
And sad to think that he is with the departed
With the dead of Millstreet he forever lay.
There was so much to like about in Paddy Healy
I knew him before he grew old and gray
He drunk many a pint of frothy dark porter
Without being aggressive or loud in any way.
