When Ballydaly was once part of Kerry

1797 Civil & Eccleastical Map by Beaufort
1797 Civil & Eccleastical Map by Beaufort which shows the East Fractions to the west of Millstreet and to the north of Cullen (click the map to enlarge)

When looking at historical maps of the Millstreet area from the 18th Century, we noticed that Kerry extended into Ballydaly and a totally detached part of Kerry was just north of Cullen. Intrigued having never heard of this, we did some research, this  is what we found out:

“Referred to as the East Fractions, they were exclaves of the barony of Magunihy in County Kerry. They existed from the suppression of County Desmond in the sixteenth century until 1843, when detached parts were transferred by Richard Griffith under the Valuation of Lands (Ireland) Act 1836 to the adjoining baronies. The fractions were part of the MacCarthy Mór territory from which Magunihy was delimited.”

It is not fully clear as to extent of the fraction around Ballydaly. Officially it was just the townlands of Balldaly and Kippagh, but it is mentioned elsewhere in different places that the Ballydaly fraction included Coolanarney and Coomacheo, and the old maps would seem to support this. We have recreated the map below showing the Ballydaly Fraction and the [read more …] “When Ballydaly was once part of Kerry”

Anna’s Food Collection for Penny Dinners

2015-01-20 Cork Penny DinnersThe staff of Penny Dinners have asked us to pass on their thanks to everyone in Millstreet who has contributed so generously to Anna’s Collection for Penny Dinners.

Thanks to the customers of Guy & Dolls, Colemans Centra and SuperValu. A big thank you to the staff, pupils and parents of Millstreet Community School who donated a staggering volume of goods. The photo shows Stephen and some of the Transition Years with just a small portion of what was collected.
We also have to thank the following people who have facilitated the collection and /or delivery:

Mary Murphy of Guys & Dolls • Mary & John Coleman and the staff of Coleman’s Centra • Joe Fitzgerald and the staff of SuperValu • Gerard Ryan of Millstreet Community School • TY students Millstreet Community School • Michelle O’Keeffe • Donagh Reardon.

Collection boxes are still in place in Colemans Centra, SuperValu and Guys & Dolls.

Song: The Plains of Drishane

The Plains of Drishane - music sheet and lyricsOh one morning bright as Phoebus shone quite illuminative
When Flora’s decorations had painted the green
With footsteps quite unwavered—from Millstreet I roamed Eastward
To view the navigation of that pleasing grand scene
Absorbed in meditation—I pondered in amazement,
Admiring each plantation and far spreading lawn,
That have won such admiration for this far famed dwelling station,
Whose proper appelation—or name—is Drishane.

There’s a mill for grinding corn and an engine ploughing the farm,
Fine oxen that are stall fed, the largest to be found:
And the yard resounds with screech of guinea-hen and peacock.
The swan upon the lake and he sailin’ all around.
The lime-kilns are kept blazing with columns most unsparing, [read more …] “Song: The Plains of Drishane”
