New Comhaltas Instrument Bank

2015 Millstreet Comhaltas - logoMillstreet Comhaltas Branch are trying to build up an new instrument bank. This is a great way for children to try new instruments without initially having to commit to the cost of a new one.

If you have any old instruments you are finished with and would like to donate, we would be most grateful whatever the condition. If you could drop into our weekly session on a Monday in the Parish Center from 7-8 pm. The instruments will then be available to rent to our comhaltas members to try out.

Many thanks from Millstreet Comhaltas Branch

2016 General Election Campaign, Independent Candidate LOOKING FOR SUPPORT

Woodland Drive,

Tel: 0870674520

Date: 14/02/15

Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m writing to you In relation to the possibility of putting my name forward as an Independent Candidate for the 2016 General Election.

My name is Steven O’ Riordan and I’m a member of Millstreet Macra. I’m the brother of disability activist Joanne O’ Riordan who was born without limbs. My background is in the Arts and my political interests are social and human rights issues.

I’m currently looking for help in mounting a campaign that would result in taking a seat within the Cork North West area.

The campaign would be run on a number of issues, these include; Disability, Young People, Urban V Rural Ireland, Dail Reform, Immigrants, Sport & The Arts.

I’m probably best known for my work on the issue of the Magdalene Laundries and my most recent documentary “No Limbs No Limits” The Joanne O’ Riordan. I was a key figure in securing the state apology for the women of the Magdalene Laundries. Over the years I have also used my ability to ensure that people with disabilities live in a society that is inclusive. You can see this in my local area where I was successful in getting the County Council to make all public buildings & footpaths wheelchair accessible.

I believe that the time is right to put [read more …] “2016 General Election Campaign, Independent Candidate LOOKING FOR SUPPORT”

*** Indicates Not a nun. There are three burials in the nuns plot that are nuns, and these are:

  • Michael McGrath was the wonderfully popular Gardener for decades in Drishane and he was buried in the Nuns’ Cemetery …. not along the main row…more nearer the hedge.   I remember him from my youth. – S.R.
  • Mary Teehan was a Dublin woman who was a nun for a number of years. She left the order and worked in the Catholic Communications Institute in Booterstown, Dublin. She used to come to Drishane every year for her holidays. She was immensely popular with everyone and some of the nuns used call her “Lady May”. It was her desire always, to be buried in Drishane. – L.F.

Sr. Malen del Valle IJS
On 18th April 2012 Sr. Malen del Valle IJS was presented with this award in recognition of her work with the Aisling Project, which supports young people’s education through its innovative after-school programmes in Ballymun. “Magdalena del Valle (abbreviated to Malen) was born in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Islands. She grew up in a family of four, with two brothers and a sister and as a child enjoyed swimming, basketball and scout activities. She attended the Sacred Heart Convent School and enjoys meeting up with friends when she revisits her homeland.
At age seventeen Magdalena moved to Spain to live with her grandmother and to attend university. While there she came into contact with the Infant Jesus Sisters and, following graduation, joined the Infant Jesus Sisters taking the name Sister Malen. The next few years were spent teaching in Madrid, working as a School Principal in Bembibre, a mining town in the north of Spain, and subsequently running an after-school project in Barcelona. Sr. Malen then moved to Liverpool where she worked with a young team in collaboration with the Christian Brothers and ran retreats for secondary school students. Some years later she came to Ireland and started a similar project ‘Challenge for Life’. This work involved running retreats in schools all over Ireland.
In 1997, during a parish mission in Ballymun, one of the Principals of St. Joseph’s School asked Sr. Malen to initiate a service for local children who had dropped out of school. The Aisling Project began in a flat provided by Dublin City Council. It was prepared by volunteers and furnished by generous donations.
There are now five individual Projects operating in Ballymun. The main aims of the Aisling Project are to prevent early school leaving, to benefit the
community and to advance education by running an after-school intervention project for children at risk. This intervention provides purposeful activity including drama, music and swimming. The projects
take place Monday to Thursday 2.30pm to 6.00pm with a full three-week Summer Project during the month of July each year. The programme is
designed around the interests, needs and learning of the young people involved in the project.”
In her acceptance speech Malen paid tribute to all who have made this Aisling project possible over the years. [ijs]

Steven O’Riordan to run for the Dáil

The best of luck to Steven O’Riordan, who will run as an Independent in the forthcoming General Election (due by April 2016), and who is hoping to take a seat in our three-seat Cork North West constituency.

Steven said the policies of both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael parties “simply do not work”, that he wants to “give something back” to the people who have helped his family over the years, and “I want people to be proud of the TDs they elect. The people of Cork North West and Ireland deserve better.”

Rumblings over Community Hospitals

St.Joseph’s Community Millstreet Hospital – photo by TMC Photography (Jan 2015)

In mid January, newspaper reports began to emerge of problems with many nursing homes across the country, especially in light of upcoming new stricter regulations from HIQA. It became a national political event for a few days, but unfortunately St.Joseph’s Community Hospital Millstreet was one of six in Cork that were mentioned.

Local FG TD Michael Creed dismissed suggestions that the local hospitals faced closure, but FF leader Mícheál Martin insisted that a huge crisis was looming due to new stricter HIQA requirements that are coming in July 2015.

At a local meeting, FG TD Áine Collins suggested that a private modern hospital should be built to replace St. Josephs, and that the community should get behind it.

Locally people have put a lot of time and money to upgrade and maintain our local hospital, because God forbid we can’d afford to lose another service in our community. It’s hard to know what will happen, only time will tell, but it can’t be stressed enough that these services should remain local.

The latest inspection reports a “warm environment … residents voiced how happy they were with the care they received … how residents enjoyed the food of offer … Staff exhibited an in-depth knowledgeable about [read more …] “Rumblings over Community Hospitals”

Slowing down for the sake of our Children

Jake Brennan

In June of 2014 little Jake Brennan was knocked down by a speeding driver while playing outside his home on a cul-de-sac in Kilkenny. Since then his parents have been campaigning to have speed bumps and a maximum speed of 30km/hr mandatory in residential estates nationwide (50km/hr is the current speed limit).

Our local Councillors have been asked to set up five estates as a pilot scheme for the 30km/h limit, and they have chosen Drishane View in Millstreet.

It is hoped that this will be rolled out in 2015, sooner rather than later. It’s a great initiative to protect our children, but as ever getting some to slow down and cop on is easier said than done 😕 [read more …] “Slowing down for the sake of our Children”
