Something Special

Millstreet Pipe Band at Ballydaly Mass - photo by John Tarrant
Millstreet Pipe Band at Ballydaly Mass on Tuesday morning last – photo by John Tarrant

St.Patrick’s Day is always very busy for Millstreet Pipe Band. On Tuesday they started early at Ballydaly mass, followed by Millstreet mass at 11:30, followed by the Killarney Parade at 2pm, and finally back to the Millstreet Parade at 5pm.

Now our Pipe Band always play during St.Patrick’s Day mass in St.Patrick’s Church Millstreet, so when it was mentioned the week before that they would be played again this year, I was happy because it’s always nice, but didn’t take extra special notice of it.

But … what they played as the reflection after communion turned out to be something unexpectedly special. It started with a number of pipers playing from the altar, but then the church organ started to play at the opposite end of the church, and as the musicians played, for a few precious minutes as the low bass vibrations of the organ and the pipers passed through us, everyone was enthralled by beauty and emotion of the moment, as the hairs stood on the back of our necks … and it was of course followed by a rapturous applause.  Truly, a moment not to be forgotten. Genealogy: Dr. Michael W. O’Keefe

Michael W O'Keefe, born in Millstreet in 1852 012-800On St. Patrick’s Day, I send along a pic of my great-grandfather, Dr. Michael W. O’Keefe, 1852-1926, born in Millstreet, son of Daniel & Catherine O’Keefe, so it is said, and sent to the US about 1860 to be educated by his older brother Rev. Dennis Aloysius O’Keefe (1840-1868), a priest who sent the boy Michael to a Catholic school (St. Charles) in Maryland.

Dennis had parishes in Uxbridge, Mass., and then Clinton, Mass., and died while raising funds to build a church. His parishioners built a huge monument to him in the graveyard (instead of a church?).

Michael went on to the College of the Holy Cross in [read more …] “Genealogy: Dr. Michael W. O’Keefe”

Nadd Ambush – March 10th 1921

John P & I are very interested in local history, so we went up to Glentaneatnagh on Tuesday (March 10th) on the anniversary to pay our respects. It also ties into the burning of Dromagh Castle the day before (March 9th 1921)

The main picture below is of flags on the monument at Glentaneatnagh (located here). The next (small) monument is at Nadbeg (located here), and the last monument is at Nadd village on main Banteer to Cork road (located here). – from Tom of TMC Photography

I.R.A. Suffer Losses During Roundup at Nadd is a very good article describing the activities before, during and after that wet and foggy morning in Nadd in 1921.

New Nest Boxes by our Men’s Shed

20150310_200459- Men's Shed Nest Boxes10th March 2015, the Millstreet Mens Shed presented members of Millstreet Tidy Town association with 12 nest boxes.

The nest boxes which were beautifully built by the Men’s Shed  and will be strategically located around the greener parts of Millstreet. Mainly the Town park, Clara Rd, Community school and perhaps even across from the Men’s Shed so the lads can observe their handy work.

There are 3 different types of nest boxes involved and a huge amount of effort and craftsmanship was placed into the creation of these nest boxes.

More information will be available on nest boxes on Millstreet Tidy Town website, which will be up and running in the coming weeks.

Many thanks to all involved. Pictured are Bertie Buckley and members of Mens Shed and Derry Sheehan and Kieran Murphy of Millstreet Tidy Town.
