Bob Kelly

Bob Kelly died on the 4th April here in Corby, Northamptonshire. He was aged 74. He came from Bantry but he worked in Millstreet in the early 60s (I think he was a mechanic at Lucys garage). He played football with the Millstreet football team and I’m sure there are some people who will remember him. He stayed with the Burkes in Murphy’s Terrace. Tommy will remember him. His wife is Rose. She comes from Cork city. Her grandmother was a teacher in Shrone school back in the late 40s, early 50s.

With thanks to Donal O’Regan (formerly from Ballydaly) for this notice

John (Jack) Corcoran – killed in the Korean War

John Corcoran from Coolikerane who died in the Korean War 03Born in Coolikerane, Millstreet on the 29th of September 1929, John Corcoran emigrated to the United States, and settled in Lafayette Parish in Louisana where his uncle resided.

He was one of only a few who volunteered for military service, whence he became Private First Class Corcoran, a member of the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division.

On a day when many were wounded or killed, he was seriously wounded by enemy mortars while fighting on September 24, 1950, as the 32nd attempted to create a bridgehead on the opposite side of the Han River close to Soeul in South Korea.  John was wounded when he instinctively and nobly used his body to protect his injured friend and comerade Paul Oliver. He died of his wounds on October 2, 1950 in Osaka Hospital, Japan.

He was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery, Lafayette, Lafayette Parish Louisiana, USA (see photos below). Paul Olivier whose life he saved continued to maintain John’s tomb in Lafayette, but Paul himself passed away recently – December 9th 2014, so one wonders if it is maintained anymore but it is still being maintained beautifully (see photos below). John Michael Curtin

Denis Curtin (1843-1917) with his son John Michael Curtin (1879-1946)

Did you know that a first cousin of Australian war-time Prime Minister is buried in Drishane Cemetery? Their fathers John and Denis, and another brother Michael emigrated together on the Earl Dalhousie in 1874, but Denis returned with his son John in 1882 after his wife died.

“John Curtin’s (the Australian Prime Minister 1941-1945) early ancestry is Irish. His father, also a John Curtin, was born in 1853 at, Kilpadder, near Dromohane, Mallow, in the Parish of Kilshanig, Co Cork. He emigrated to South Australia in January 1874 on board the “Earl Dalhousie” with his brothers Michael and Denis. He served in the Artillery Corps and transferred to the Victorian Police in 1878. He retired from the Force in 1890.
John’s brother Denis was born in 1843. He married Bridget Conway in Adelaide, South Australia in 1876 and together they moved to Melbourne, Victoria. Their son John Michael Curtin was born in 1879. Sadly Bridget died, and in 1882 Denis and his young son went back to Ireland. Denis is buried in the [read more …] “John Michael Curtin”

Genealogy: Charles Chenery Justice

Dear sir/madam,
I shall be over in Millstreet on 4th/5th May, tending to my Nans grave.
One of my aunts has sent me a photo of a plaque in Drishane cemetery and would like some more information, it is for a Charles Chenery Justice, who we believe died in early 1879. I’m hoping that I could meet up with someone who could enlighten me.
Many thanks

Regional Report 1261 – 14th April 2015

by

Eily Buckley

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a Cairde and welcome to News Reporty 1261 from Millstreet. Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely April Day.

A note from the Community Council to say that to-night’s (Tuesday) meeting at the Wallis Arms has been deferred.

Millstreet has emerged from one of its busiest weekends ever.

The Millstreet Welcome Tour, equestrian event which brought horses and horsey people from all over the country since April 2nd  was an outstanding success. The Eventing on the planes of Drishane is proving very popular and is drawing the crowds.

A Gala Fundraising Dance with Liam O’Connor was held at the Green Glens Arena on Wednesday April 8th, and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh was MC. A Great night was had by all.

The crowds also came for our two-day Walking Festival which was held on Saturday and Sunday. This time our organisers had four new Walks added, some more challenging, but walking enthusiasts took it all in their stride, literally.

Spring Horse Fair 1965

Video from the RTÉ Archives

The video above has been published by RTÉ of Millstreet coming to a standstill for the Annual Spring Horse Fair of 1965. The Fair was not only a time for bargaining and dealing. It was also a social occasion that continues to attract the crowds, young and old, to the town. The video above is from a Newsbeat report broadcast on 12 April 1965, and was probably held on Sunday February 28th 1965 (the closest Sunday to March 1st). [update July 2015: the video has since been removed by RTE 🙁 ]

Below is a gallery of 27+ stills from the video. It is likely many of the people are not locals, but it would be interesting if people could help us recognise some people in the photos: [read more …] “Spring Horse Fair 1965”

Banteer Drama Group “Family Fever” by Sam Cree continues at the Glen Theatre this Sun 12th April at 8:30pm and this hilarious comedy is a follow up to last year’s “Wedding Fever”. As the Galbraith family prepare for Christmas and New Year, Alec Galbraith hopes for a peaceful Christmas. However, Myra, his eldest daughter, is heavily pregnant and is ready to give birth at any moment, while daughter Linda is cooing in a lovesick fashion over the latest object of her affections, the kilted Scotsman Archie McNulty. Stir in a pair of staidly disapproving in-laws, nosy neighbours Willie and Emily Beatty disturbing the peace, some slinky ladies underwear, an amorous Aunt Maud, a nappy-changing scene where flour is used instead of talc to salve the baby’s bottom, and a generous amount of seasonal tippling, and you get the picture!

Everyone is welcome. There is also a show on Sunday 19th April at 8:30pm.
