On Shaky Ground
The large earthquake in Nepal this last week has been terrible for the people there, but most of us don’t know that in Millstreet, we actually live on a major fault line that was once as active as the any in the world. Referred to as the Killarney-Mallow Fault (KMF), it stretches from the Iveragh Peninsula in Kerry to the other side of Mallow and is the point where two continents were colliding. It is a reverse and thrust fault, and it resulted in folding of the rocks that created all the mountains of south of here.
This all happened 270 million years ago, so thankfully we get no serious earthquakes these days. The mountains were once almost three times as large, but they have since been weathered and scoured by glaciers during the ice ages, down to their current shapes, while the valleys have been filled in with debris.
Below are detailed maps and explanations and links to further detail: [read more …] “On Shaky Ground”

Millstreet Community School students attend SVP Youth for Justice Exhibition
Eleven Transition Years from Millstreet Community School attended the SVP Youth for Justice Exhibition in Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork on 30th April. Youth for Justice is an initiative to encourage students to get more involved in their school and local community. Our students organised three very successful events during the year:
1. Bake Sale in aid of the Marie Keating Foundation in October 2014 which raised €687.22
2. An Intergenerational Christmas Table Quiz in December 2015
3. Cluichi agus Ceol! An afternoon of games and music involving adults and the TY students in March 2015
Over four hundred students attended from schools all over Cork. Each set up a display and gave a presentation to everyone present about what was achieved during the year.

Regional Report 1263 – 28th April 2015
by
Eily Buckley
Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1263 from Millstreet. Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the best on this very changable Tuesday morning.
At all Masses at the weekend our Canon John read out a request from the head of the Unions of Ireland asking that today Tuesday April 28th be deemed as a day of Prayer for all those who were killed in the course of their work. He said it was the first time that this request was ever made.
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred on 80 children of Millstreet Parish on tomorrow Wednesday, Ceremony starting at 3.30 and all are welcome to attend.
Times of Eucharistic adoration for Wednesday have been slightly altered as a result. It will be held from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm and again from6.30 to 10.30pm.
Confessions every Saturday from 12,30 to 1pm.
The weather is really living up to what we called Garabheen na g’Uuach( Cuchoo) when we were young. It referred to the last weeks of April and the first two weeks of May when the climate went willy nilly and unpredictable. It used to fill those who had hens down hatching with dread in case the heavy hailstones pelting off the galvenised roofs would kill the birds in their shells. But that was fado fado.
The sudden slump in temperatures last week sent us all scurrying for the warm clothes once again.
Even family pets were seen to be distressed by the sudden cold snap. And should get special attention at this time.
But cold did not deter all those who took part in the MonsterMac which was centred at our Country Park on Saturday. Look up our website for the results.
