Dr. Barry Cotter – First Doctor in Melbourne

Hello to the Millstreet community,

I wanted to let you know that I have finished researching and writing the biography of Dr Barry Cotter, first doctor in Melbourne, Australia, who was born in Millstreet in 1807. The biography is available here, drbarrycotter.com.  I received news this week that The National Library of Australia is going to archive the website into its online collection, so I’m pretty excited about that. Thanks again to the Aubane Historical Society, especially Jack Lane and Alan Brick who were so generous in supplying information.

I look forward to any comments from members of the Millstreet community about the website. cheers, from Moira McAlister <email>

A very successful Transition Year Graduation at Millstreet Community School

2015-05-11 TY Graduation Night - 1239The Transition Year Graduation took place in Millstreet Community School on Tuesday 12th May 2015.  Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jack Fitzgerald with students playing an active part in much of the liturgy.  Afterwards Mr. Derry Sheehan (Managing Director of Avonmore Electrical) presented a folder containing certificates to every student acknowledging their achievements during the year. Cheques for €500 were then presented to representives from SVP Millstreet and Cork Penny Dinners.  This money came from the proceeds of the recent Fashion Show.  The €730 cheque for Trocaire was raised by the students through participation in the 24 hour fast during Lent. Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1265 from Millstreet.  Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this wet but mild Tuesday morning.

The Town of Millstreet echoed to the sounds of pipers music on Sunday Evening as our Community welcomed home the three lovely lassies with their All Ireland Medals from the Boxing Finals which were held in Dublin on Saturday Night.

They were Cloe Barrett, Linda Desmond who won Gold and Megan Lehane, Silver. Our Pipe Band played them through the Town and a gala reception was laid in their honour.

These 12/13 year olds , are indeed to be lauded for their wonderful achievments and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more of them as time goes on.

I’ve a note here from our Tidy Towns Association saying thatMillstreet Tidy Town Association have received adjudication results from first round of Anti Litter Competition 2015. Millstreet are 4th which is brilliant.

That being said we still have a nice bit of ground to make up to reach 1st place,  which is completely achievable. Remember the prize fund for this competition would go a long way to aid our organisations annual outgoings.

The next judging period commences the 11th May and the entire town again is being judged with particular focus on Tanyard Wood on this occasion. Murphy’s Terrace did very well in first adjudication so a massive congratulations to all those who aided there and please, keep up the good work.

As always the weekly Litter Pick Up is on Thursday evening @ 7pm, meeting in The Square. We would so appreciate anybody who could join us. Millstreet are in with a real chance of winning this competition. Hope to see you all there.

Steam Train 461 Visits Millstreet and is Enthusiastically Welcomed

On an historic day in Millstreet (Sunday 10th May 2015) when a wonderful celebratory parade in honour of All-Ireland winners Chloe Barrett, Megan Lehane and Linda Desmond, an enthusiastic welcome awaited the superb Steam Train (despite the constant rain!) arriving in Millstreet Station from Cork. It remained at the 1853 Station for almost ten minutes. Later on its return journed it passed through with its marvellous steam, its nostalgic whistle sound and its trul elegant movement. It's been several years since we last witnessed a Steam Train in Millstreet. LTV2 Millstreet recorded the magnificent event. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)

May In Annagloor

With such wonderful memories how could anyone feel poor
Of the nesting songbirds singing in the groves of Annagloor
And the hawthorns looking resplendent in their white blossoms of the May
And the old fields in their wildflowers green and beautiful today
And the dark brown birds of the waterways of breast as white as snow
The dipper he is singing where the babbling Cails does flow
Where i first grew to love Nature years ago as a young boy
And today learning of her ways is a thing i do enjoy [read more …] “May In Annagloor”

Memories Of Mick Connie O

An old time story teller from decades ago
He was quite a character Mick Connie O
One who had lived through two World wars and had fought the black and tan
And in his younger years quite a well traveled man

As he spun a good yarn or told a good joke
He puffed on his pipe and blew out some smoke
Coolikerane’s greatest story teller when i was a boy
Good memories of him remain as a source of joy [read more …] “Memories Of Mick Connie O”
