We bring your attention to our most recent online LTV2 Programme No. 258 in which we share some very interesting sequences including an exclusive interview with Donncha Ó Dúlaing, P.J. Murrihy, Annmarie O’Riordan and Nora Reidy – all recorded in Killarney.   Steam Train in Millstreet recently has also received lots of views.  We thank John Tarrant for his appreciated mention on “Corkman”.  John’s brilliant picture on a recent tweet (29th May) relating to the Boherbue/Cullen football match on Friday night in the Town Park is hugely impressive and worthy of “The Picture of the Year” award!  I had the privilege of being beside John when he captured it from the sideline. Inspiring All-Ireland Walk in Aid of Mourne Mountains Rescue Service

Stephen (centre) from Co. Down accompanied for part of the journey by the two Johns is pictured at Conrad Jones's (sitting by unique fire setting) exquisite Pod accommodation centre in Mushera as he overstays on a few nights during his truly epic journey from Dursey Island in West Cork following the O'Sullivan Beara-Breifni Walkway and far beyond to arrive back in his native Co. Down. The fund-raising project in aid of the Mourne Mountains Rescue Service to which he is inspiringly dedicated, will take some five weeks to complete. LTV2 recorded a brief interview with Stephen for later transmission. We wish Steven and his wife (who provides backup transport when necessary). It's a very challenging adventure but the wonderfully cheerful Stephen recognises its many benefits and is also seeing Ireland in a splendid manner and tuning into the various accents. Many thanks to Conrad and his wife for alerting us to this superbly uplifting project. Click on the images to enlarge. (S.R.)

“When six months ago I got a call from Mr.Fraser with the proposed project I was very excited and very grateful of the opportunity to come back to Millstreet school and work in the environment that I grew up in. Mr.Fraser and I discussed the project and came up with a brief for the students. The brief was simple but broad. It was for the class of 13 to design, develop and build a group of creatures that interact with each other and the environment of the school grounds. I met the students and we started brainstorming. A plan slowly started to develop from lots of different areas, such as squid creatures, an alien crash site, coconut monsters and tree like creatures. We had ideas of functional creatures that doubled as seating areas and a fantastical two headed creature that would chase itself in a circle. We settled on a preditor prey situation, where two Aligatyres ambush a Cementapede that is erupting from the ground. St Anna’s Church and Graveyard

St. Anna's Church, Millstreet 02
St. Anna’s Church and Graveyard, with Clara Mountain in the background

St Anna’s church was built in 1798 on the site provided by the local landlord J. Wallis of Drishane Castle. In the period 1807-1814, the church was enlarged and a belfry added. The church building covered an area of approximately 1,500 square feet (175 sq m) and had the capacity to seat 70-80 people. An 1835 Church report stated that, on average, 60 people attended the weekly service. Due to the gradual decline of the local Church of Ireland population from the 1800’s, the parish of Drishane with its church, St. Anna’s was eventually united with the nearby parish of Dromtariffe in 1904. Thereafter, church services became less frequent in Millstreet. The last religious service held in St Anna’s was in the late 1930’s and it was officially closed for public worship on 16th November 1958. The following year the church building was demolished for safety reasons, leaving only the belfry intact. In 1994-95 the Millstreet Tidy Towns Association, assisted by FÁS and Cork Co. Council, undertook the project of restoring the Belfry and the adjoining graveyard and recording its history. The St. Anna’s restoration project has enhanced the image of the town and preserved an element of our history and heritage.

The resulting St. Anna’s Amenity Park was officially opened by Rt. Rev. R. A. Warke B. D. Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross on May 4th 1997. In 1995 at the time of the restoration, Denis Tagney wrote a book about it called: “St.Anna’s Church, Millstreet – a history” published by Millstreet Museum Society (56 pages)

“St. Anna’s Amenity Park – This Church-yard having remained unused for many years was developed for the people of the Millstreet area by Millstreet Tidy Town and Tourism Association in conjunction with FÁS and Cork County Council. We dedicate this park to the memory ofthe Church of Ireland Community who worshipped here 1798-1930. We acknowledge with heartfelt gratitude all those who lent their support and helped in various ways during its development and reconstruction. Officially opened by the Rt. Rev. R.A. Warke B.D. Bishop of Cork Cloyne and Ross on May 4th 1997. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas d’anmacha na marbh atá curtha anseo. (God rest the souls that are buried here)”

Getting there

St. Anna’s is only a two minute walk from the Square. See the map below. You can also park outside the gate.

The Rectory for the protestant clergy was located just 100m further up the Liscahane Road. It is now a private dwelling house (bottom-right of the above map)

Poem

The Clock Tower
by Sandra Ann Winters

Stone upon stone the bell tower rises outside my window,
a protestant ruin of the village church. You belonged
to Drishane Castle. You belonged to the people.
The ringer gently bowed to the lintel, climbed
narrow stone steps spiraling, to call worshipers to holy communion.
Years later, Tidy Towns filled your belfry with a white-faced clock.
I raise the linen shade, wake to your dial, Black Roman numerals
go round and round. You move through my tea and egg.
I notice the time as I am off to the shop for the Guardian
and lamb. You are my companion as I play with poems
and read Passing Through. I stroll in the deep grass,
rubbing old tombstones, no longer legible.
You move through my days until you wane in the light
of the evening and fade at the unfairness of fate.

Denny Murray Was Our Hero

The man who owned the stud stallions Rambling Boy and Rising Light
And who was widely known as the man to kill the blight
In fancy i do see Denny Murray today
On horse drawn sprayer spraying the potato gardens from here far away

Though of love he did have a few flings in his life
Denny Murray he did not have children or wife
From his late teens to his mid fifties he lived on the wild side
And beyond Ballydaly became known far and wide

Our vote at Referendums and Elections are the only way us ordinary people have to influence the direction of our country. Yet at the last referendum, only 39% of voters turned up to vote on the “Abolition of the Seanad”.

We would encourage everyone to cast their vote today on the “Marriage Referendum” and on the “Age of Presidential Candidate Referendum”, no matter whether you want to vote Yes or No. Fair play to our own Laura Cronin who works for Tourism Ireland in Amsterdam who is flying home to vote. She was profiled yesterday in a long article in Stellar Magazine, with a shorter piece in an article in the Irish Independent.

It’s hard to see anything other than a Yes vote in the Marriage Referendum, especially if younger voters turn up at the polls, but stranger things have happened. Now does anyone know how the Age of Presidential Candidates Referendum will end up? [read more …] “It’s Referendum Day – now get out and Vote !”
