The Millstreet Community School Senior Soccer Team’s terrific run in the John Murphy Cup sadly came to an end on Monday 11th January. The team lost 2-1 after extra time to Nagle Community College in their semi-final. Billy Cronin scored the team’s goal. Nothing was left on the pitch – all the boys gave everything for the cause and they should be proud of their efforts in this game and in the previous fixtures.
Huge congratulations to the Millstreet Macra team of Rebecca Ambrose, Steven O’Riordan, and Katie Guerin who won the Macra Public Speaking National Championships in Killarney last weekend, and to top it off, Steven also won Best Speaker on the night. They are pictured below with Macra President Seán Finan.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the food collection for Cork Penny Dinners. This time last year, Penny Dinners was serving 1,000 meals per week. By the end of 2015, they were serving 1,800 per week from a dilapidated and sub standard premises. Francis and John Brennan of At Your Service took on the challenge of giving the Penny Dinners premises a much needed makeover and the results were broadcast on RTE 1 on Christmas Day. This episode is still available on RTE Player (here).
Christmas is over but the need is as great as ever, especially in the harsh weather conditions we are experiencing at the moment. Food collection boxes are still in place in Guys & Dolls Hair Salon, Coleman’s Centra and SuperValu. Thanks to Mary Murphy; Mary & John Coleman and staff; Joe Fitzgerald and staff for their continued support. Any other local businesses wishing to donate or get involved can contact 087 6886725.

So what better way to start a New Year than to reflect on the achievements of the previous year. There is so much to choose from. Well we had a very successful Anti Litter Challenge campaign this last year. We have an eye on first place for 2016. Then there is also the various projects that Tony Keneally, Wildlife Biologist has been heavily involved in with both the National and Secondary Schools. Also brilliant results in the National Tidy Town for this past year, only narrowly missing out on a Bronze Medal. Millstreet won a Pride of Place award in October. Dia is Mhuire diobh and welcome to some notes from Millstreet.
A wonderful night was had by all at the Womens Christmas Party which was held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday January 8th. In excess of 130 ladies of every age and background flocked to the venue where they were greeted with some warm mulled wine, before being seated for a wonderful meal. Music was provided by Back on Track, headed by local man Danny Creedon. There were spot prizes golore, and the fun ‘n games went on till late.
Six years ago our first Womens Christmas party was organised by a new girl in town Mairead Daly and it has gone from strength to strength since then. Others have rowed in now to help Mairead with the workload. Any money left over goes to the local cancer support group which was started by Mairead Daly, who has the disease herself. We wish her well.
A group of students from our Community School aquitted themselves at the Young Scientists Exhibition which was held at the RDS last week. Some had the honour of being photographed with the president and his wife Sabina while others were interviewed by the popular TV presenter Vincent Brown and appeared on his program. They were James Cronin, Knocknakilla, Padraig Moynihan, Keale ,whose mother runs our Post Office, and Shane Hickey, grandson of Noel C Duggan.
Well done to them all.
