Death Notice: Catherine Braun (née Shine), NH

Catherine (Shine) Braun, 94 years young, died unexpectedly at her home in Littleton, New Hampshire on January 30, 2016. Born April 17, 1921 in the village of Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland  at Knocknagurrane, near Cullen. Mrs. Braun grew up in a typical Catholic family as the youngest of 7 brothers and sisters. She was raised in a cottage with a thatched and sod roof, heated only by a peat stove, and lacking indoor plumbing or electricity. In 1937 she travelled to London to train as a nurse. Catherine lived and worked in that city during the Blitzkrieg, tending to the injured and the ill.

During the 1950’s, Catherine immigrated to Boston to care for a sick relative. There she met the love of her life, Frederick J. Braun. They were married in May 1958 and had a son, Gary, the next year. After living for a short time in Connecticut and Vermont, she and Fred settled down and built a home in Littleton, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Catherine continued with nursing in New Hampshire. She frequently worked as a private nurse, caring for permanently disabled patients or those with terminal illnesses. She was devoted to her patients and worked well into her later years giving comfort to those who lived in pain and discomfort. [read more …] “Death Notice: Catherine Braun (née Shine), NH”

Eily’s Update – 2nd February

eily1

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde, and welcome.

Very few programs start this week without a mention of Terry Wogan, and I’m glad that our website  has given a section all of its own to his memory. It makes wonderful viewing. Please bring it to the notice of the many people who are not online. No doubt some of them have followed the renowned Terry’s career from humble beginnings, to the great heights that he achieved in fifty years. May God reward him for all his goodness and give his soul eternal rest.

Another very interesting feature on our Web this week shows the historic Altamount House, the Before and he After. Again a great feature for those who remembered it in its hey-day.

We’ve moved on to the month of February, and the joys of Spring were welcomed in here in Millstreet when one mother sheep gave birth to three lovely little lambs. In spite of the unusual weather, the daffodils  and other spring  flowers are making their appearance. They never fail to fill us hope for the future.

Well done to all those involved in our Men’s Shed. They had their official opening last week. A very large crowd turned up to wish them well. The popular Roger Cresswell made it over from his home in England to help cut the tape.

In spite of the awful weather, it was a night of friendship, and music, song and dance and lovely refreshments.

They open every Tuesday both AM and PM, they have 25 members on the books and now with their new premises in Church St, there’s room for more. Contact Bertie Buckley for more information 087 679 38 41.

Ballydaly’s Last Blacksmith Farrier

2015-11 Brendan Murphy, BallydalyWhen Brendan Murphy was in his physical prime of time one must go back a span
Ballydaly’s last blacksmith farrier he was quite a man
He shod his last working horse in his forge in his brother Eddy’s backyard
For his livelihood he is one who did work quite hard

Tall and lean and dark haired and physically quite strong
Ballydaly’s last blacksmith farrier to a rare breed belong
The hooves of the last working horse, mule, jennet and donkey he did pare
Since the demise of the last working equines blacksmith farriers have become rare

Abandoned: Altamount House

Resting on the edge of Millstreet Town, Altamount House is a big old house that dates back to the 18th century. It has had several owners but has not been lived in for over twenty years, and has nearly totally fallen down. Originally an estate house, it was made into an emergency hospital during the famine in the 1840s and massively extended at the time to include a courtyard in the middle. It is sad to see such a fine building being taken over by nature. Photos below thanks to Ola Cashman.

We’ll stay here all night dear

RIP Sir Terry Wogan who passed away today aged 77 following a short illness. “We’ll stay here all night dear” was his famous quote as he commentated for the BBC on the Eurovision in Millstreet, as the organisers tried to get in contact with the last decisive jury from Malta, as the UK and Ireland battled it out for the win.
