March By The Finnow

RobbirtreeOn a budding birch tree the male robin on song
Near where old Finnow river goes babbling along
Though the wind from the high country by Clara Hill
Does blow with a touch of a wintry chill
In mid March in the earlier days of the Spring
When the early nesting birds are commencing to sing
The swallows not yet back on their breeding ground
And the chill of the Winter it is still around
And the old Finnow River in flood waters of brown
Babbles through the fields and bogs by Millstreet Town
Though in shady places by ditch and hedgerow
The wildflowers of Nature in the blustery winds blow
Where Finnow from the high country the Cails does meet
Just west of the Duhallow Town of Millstreet.

Details of Millstreet St.Patrick’s Day Parade 2016

MILLSTREET ST PATRICKS DAY COMMITTEE

Hello all, please find below details of the St Patricks day parade in Millstreet.

CHANGE IN PARADE ROUTE

2016 marks the start of a new chapter for Millstreet St Patricks Day Parade, as we are changing the route the parade takes. The parade will now commence in the front carpark of the Green Glens on the Station Road. This change was due to increases in the numbers of individuals and floats taking part over the last number of years. For the first time in a long time we will have all participates in the one place, this will ensure that we will be able to maintain our high level of safety and comfort we offer to all taking part.

The route is as follows

Starting in the Green Glens Carpark Station Road at 5.00 pm, taking a left at Corkery’s corner, up to viewing stand in the square and will break up at the turn off for the fair field carpark in Minor row.

This will enable people to get back into the square quickly and also access the carpark. For vehicles wishing to return back up to the square, you may turn at the Dairygold front carpark.

1916

Millstreet St Patricks Day Parade committee have introduced a new category this year to commemorate 1916, we are looking for individuals and groups to take part. [read more …] “Details of Millstreet St.Patrick’s Day Parade 2016”

Eily’s update – 1st March

eily1
Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a caidre and welcome.

Today is the first day of March and tradition has it that if March comes in like a lion it goes out like a lamb.  So we live in hope.

Well thank God the General Election is all over, goodness knows it created a great stir in every corner of the country, and the amount of voluntary effort that goes into it can only be imagined. The putting up of the posters, (and repairing them after the storms). The canvassing, the debating, the pleading for your vote. I think you have to be very special sort of person.

In our area at least the die has been cast. And we congratulate those who were successful, but our hearts go out to those who were not. Áine Collins worked so hard for us over the past five years and is responsible for so many great new developments in our area. Not least among them the funding for the bridge across the Blackwater at Dooneen. The €4m funding for our local hospital, to name but a couple. We will miss her so much. Not that we find any fault with the men, but you can’t beat the “Woman’s Touch”.

Many thanks Aine for all your great work. And we wish you the best of health and happiness in the years ahead.

The annual March Fair in Millstreet, last Sunday, was almost a non-event. The feeling is that there may have been some confusion as to when it was on. Our March Fair is self advertising, as it is held on the Sunday nearest to the First of March. So last Sunday was the right day. Very few horses turned up and the trade stands in the town were few and far between. Still there was a lot to see. Hens and ducks and sheepdog pups drew great attention, and the popular honour was there in the West End, with her antique treasures, in gold and silver.

The General Assembly of the Twinning Committee took place in the Community Council Hall last Friday on February 26th.   About twenty people were present to listen to the words of the president Yves ALLAIN. He redrew year 2015 with the stay of our Irish cousins at the beginning of September. A very good week which still strengthened the links between our two municipalities. The Bagad and the group ” Drôles de Dames “ wish to join to the next journey to Millstreet in 2017 or 2018.

The meeting was closed with a video projection of the week of exchange and of course a little drink!

Very Best Wishes –

Daniel and Nelly IGIGABEL
