Encouraging Millstreet Website Support Received

Today, while shopping in Millstreet an uplifting further gesture of support for our work on the Millstreet Website was received.   Following our recent church gate collection for the combined funding of both our Museum and Website it’s totally encouraging to note the response our appeal has received from loyal followers of our Website living elsewhere in Ireland and across the world in such a generous and concrete manner.  The relative of one such kind follower (who wishes to remain anonymous) donated €50.00 towards the support of our website.  Míle buíochas for this much appreciated gesture.   This contribution will be added to our overall fund as we continue to share such news as the following:

Eily’s Report – 23rd Aug. 2016

Dia is Muire díobh go léir a chairde and welcome to my weekly Report from Millstreet.eily1-150x150[1]

The down turn in the weather over the weekend did much to spoil a lot of carefully planned events. The residents of Drishane put many hours of planning into their first ever Garden Fete. It was going to be a gala outdoor presentation with fun and games and food and music and crafts of many countries on the list but alas the continuous rains forced the entire programme to be held indoors. However not to be outdone the organisers still forged ahead and put on the best show they could.

In the dining area there was a wide variety of foods representing many lands ,Pakistan, Lithuania , South Africa ,to name but a few. And the people were there to serve the food, say what it contained , and tell a little about from where it came. Further down in the function room there were displays of different crafts from pottery to bead craft and many other things in between. [read more …] “Eily’s Report – 23rd Aug. 2016”

Cinema: “Mick”

This local documentary by LTV & The Michael Collins Centre traces the life of Michael Collins, from his birth near Clonakilty in 1890, through his school days at Lisavaird and Clonakilty national schools. It follows his time working in London, his role in the 1916 rebellion and Collins coming to the fore as one of the most important Irish leader of The War of Independence. Events in Dublin and West Cork during that war are highlighted as is the division over the treaty. The Civil War and “The Big Fella’s” death in Beal na Blath in 1922 are explored. The film uses dramatic sketches and interviews with relatives of the people involved to tell the story of this extraordinary period of Irish history. We have a look at the Michael Collins monuments around the country, including the unveiling of the [read more …] “Cinema: “Mick””

Terence McSwiney Historic Badge at Millstreet Museum

On this Sunday, 21st August 2016 President Michael D. Higgins will officially open the new state-of-the-art Independence Museum at Kilmurry (near Lissarda) following his delivery of the Michael Collins oration at nearby Béal na Bláth (at which Millstreet Pipe Band perform annually).  The original Kilmurry Museum was named the Terence McSwiney Museum because of his close connection with the area.   Several years ago before the official opening of Millstreet Museum in 1980 I recall visiting that impressive Museum where Mrs. O’Sullivan gave me such a wonderful welcome and provided a superb guided tour of the splendid Centre.  To mark this Sunday’s historic event we here feature from our Lucey-Coleman Collection at Millstreet Museum a truly historic Terence McSwiney & Family Badge – part of a larger selection of important medals and badges.   We hope to share images from this Sunday’s Kilmurry event at a later point. Incidentally, due to further very generous contributions towards our recent annual church gate collection for Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website – our final amount has reached a much appreciated €1,820.00 for which we are truly grateful. Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)3Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -6002Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -6004Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -6001Terence McSwiney Badge at Millstreet Museum -600

Eily’s Report – 16th Aug 2016

Dia is Muire díobh go léir a chairde and welcome to my weekly Report .eily1-150x150[1]

We said it would be a busy week but found that that was a bit of an understatement.

The passing of the legendery Rita Hickey came as a little surprise in mid week. Her passing brought people from many parts both at home and abroad to pay homage to their wonderful teacher. Ninety seven year old Rita came to Millstreet in 1942/3 from Tullow Co. Carlow to teach at our Presentation Convent School at secondary level. From where she progressed with her husband Garret along with Joe Garvey to start the first secondary school in Millstreet. It was a very new venture at the time, a ground-breaking project. From cautious beginnings it grew to be the most successful school in the south. Students came from miles away to attend, some cycling as much as ten miles to and from every day, while others took lodgings in the town. Such was the hunger that people had for Education at the time. So it was no surprise that Rita’s demise brought loving ,grateful past pupils from all quarters to pay their final homage to the great Lady who gave them the high quality of life that they are enjoying today.
