Millstreet Community Hospital must get its respite care beds back

Cork North West TD, Michael Moynihan has said that the HSE in Cork need to ensure that respite care beds that were transferred from Millstreet Community Hospital to a private facility to allow for refurbishment works are returned as quickly as possible.

“Last year, six respite care beds were moved to allow refurbishment works be completed. A contract with a private operator was agreed to ensure that the existing capacity was not diminished.

“However, it has come to light recently that the contract with the private operator has ended, yet the six beds have not been reopened in Millstreet Community Hospital.  [read more …] “Millstreet Community Hospital must get its respite care beds back”

Bernard didn’t win the T.S. Eliot Prize

We hoped he would, he didn’t expect it himself, but in the end Bernard O’Donoghue didn’t win the top poetry prize in this part of the world for his book The Seasons of Cullen Church. The T.S.Eliot prize for 2016 went to Jacob Polley for his book Jackself. But the T. S. Eliot Prize Shortlist Readings took place on the eve of the prize. It was an evening of poetry, dinner and music, and all nominated poets attended. The audio of Bernard’s introduction and reading from the night have been published online, and you can listen to it below:

At the awards ceremony itself, the Chair of the Judges, Ruth Padel, had this to say of Bernard’s book:

“Bernard O’Donoghue’s The Seasons of Cullen Church combines an elegantly wry tone, deceptively easy flow, intimacy with the reader which seems effortless but is actually very original, with scholarly love of poetry down the ages. Many poems think with Dante, Virgil, Old English; many lines give you one more beat than you’d expect and, when you re-read, disclose one more layer of meaning too: very suddenly – just as, he says, the swifts arrive in Cullen, like unexplained gifts on Christmas morning.” [from tseliot.com]

Alas, despite not winning, Bernard’s profile has
once again been elevated, and his nomination has seen him profiled in the Irish national newspapers, as well as [read more …] “Bernard didn’t win the T.S. Eliot Prize”

Eily’s Report – 24th January

Dia is Muire daoibh go léir a cháirde, and welcome to my report.

Last week the Machinery Show went on for two days at the Green Glens Arena was an outstanding success with entries coming from all parts of the country. Some from as far north as Co. Tyrone and Fermanagh.

And many of the local services benefitted from the influx of extra people into the area.

Well done to the people of Aubane who presented  the proceeds of their annual Christmas Day Climb of Mushera Mountain to representatives of the, Reach Out To Cancer Support Group, at a pleasant function which was  held at their Community Centre last week.

Does anyone know of Crippleford?

Bob Kenney has been researching his family tree and is stuck at his great great great grandmother. She was Ellen Healy of Crippleford, and her marriage to Timothy Buckley on June 1, 1833 is listed in the Dromtarriffe Parish Register.

He had been trying to locate Crippleford, but after some time failed, so he asked us, but we’ve never heard of it, and no-one we asked has heard of it either. So we’re wondering if anyone of our readers has heard of it, or could ask someone that might know. Bob would be delighted if someone could help him out. If so please leave a comment below, or contact us directly [contact details are on our Contact Page].

A few thoughts:

1.. There are a couple of references to Crippleford online, all referring to “Thomas Wallace born Jan.6, 1806 in Rethcool, Duhallow, Cripleford on the Blackwater in County Cork,Ireland”. [1] [2]. There are also more references to Crippleford in the parish register, so it’s safe to say that the name did/does exist in the Dromtarriffe Parish area.

2.. It was normal for [read more …] “Does anyone know of Crippleford?”

Full information on the race is on the Slí Gaeltacht Mhúscraí Page

“Professor Gerry o’Sullivan – Surgeon of Renown – Legacy of Hope” Part 1 on C103 Sunday at 7pm

We thank Presenter supreme, John Greene, for the following advance notice regarding his upcoming 7pm Sunday radio programme (22nd Jan. 2017) on C103 (S.R.):

From a farming background in the rural village of Caheragh, he went on to become an outstanding cancer surgeon and founder of the Cork Cancer Research Centre. The sad irony is that the disease he spent almost a lifetime operating on and attempting to find cures for, seemed to take it’s revenge on him in the end.

On ‘Where the road takes me’, and over the course of three programmes, we look at the life and times, the career and many achievements of the larger than life Professor Gerry o’Sullivan, who passed away in February of 2012.

In Caheragh we meet his brothers Con and Donal. We meet the people behind the Threshing festival in the village who have raised one million euro so far, for a cause that one of their favourite sons passionately believed in. And we pay a visit to the Amenity Science Park in the village which honours the memory of a world renowned Cancer Researcher and surgeon.

We spend a day with the scientists and investigators at the Cork Cancer Research Centre, which was founded by Gerry o’Sullivan. Now in a state of the art facility, it houses clinicians and researchers under one roof, where new cancer treatments are brought to trial quicker.
