Millstreet Community School – “A Celebration of Culture and Inclusion”

The Celebration of Culture and Inclusion is a chance to recognise and celebrate the different countries and cultures that are represented in our school and community.  The evening will feature song, dance, music, poetry and the chance to sample food from many different countries, including Ireland. We will be welcoming a special guest for the event, Dr Manizha Khan.  Dr Khan and her family are originally from Afghanistan.  She is a dentist by profession.  In fact, she was the dean of a dental school in the city of Herat in Afghanistan but she and her family fled to Ireland because their lives were under threat from the regime in the country. Apart from being a dentist in Cork she is also a School of Sanctuary Ambassador and we are delighted she will be able to join us.
Admission is free.  Please feel free to join us for what is sure to be a memorable night.

Eily’s Report – 9th April

Dia is mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my Report.

I hope you are all well and safe following the ravishes of storm ‘Kathleen’ which put us all to the test over the weekend. Thank God, very little damage has been reported locally, perhaps we are getting better at reacting to the warnings and battening down our hatches in good time.  Or maybe by now that everything that was loose has already been blown away. Ironically we had no less than two weddings in the Parish on Saturday. It must  have been any bride’s worst nightmare. First of all the days leading up to Saturday, heavy sleety showers were driven by hurricane winds, not the sort you’d need if you were putting the final touches to your big day. There was no let-up. The adverse conditions still raged on Saturday morning, causing power cuts at homes and even at the hairdressers. Which forced some to seek help from neighbours whose power supply survived.  God was good, there was a little respite at mid-day when the sun shone out to give all the wedding parties the opportunity to make it to the church and then the rain and storm returned. What a story those couples will have to tell their grandchildren in years to come.   We wish them God’s Blessing and many years of wedded bliss in the years ahead.

New Footpath from Drishane to Coole Cross

The Drishane road has long been day or night a popular place for  people looking to get out and walk or run in a safe location. Good news is that the pavement looks set to be extended out to Coole Cross in the near future.

The Corkman tells us that at the most recent meeting of the local municipal district, funding of €40,000 was allocated for  the Footpath Project Millstreet from Drishane to Coole Cross, while the Christmas Lights  in Millstreet are also to receive funding of €8,000. [1]

So many people walk that stretch of the road that a path has long been reddened into the roadside, so hopefully this footpath will add extra safety for those out walking.
