Millstreet Fire services support World Remembrance Day for victims of road traffic collisions

World Remembrance Day for victims of road traffic collisions is Sunday next 15th November.
In previous years the Fire Service participated in Church Services and other events to mark the day. This year it is not possible to mark the occasion in that way.

The Local Authority National Road Safety Officers Group is instead lighting up Council Headquarters between 7 – 8pm on the evening of Sunday November 15th in memory of road victims.

Here is a piece to express Millstreet Fire services support in lighting up for road traffic safety.

Millstreet Parent Assn Competition Winners

Millstreet Parents Association sadly couldn’t put on the annual ‘Halloween Disco’ this year, so recently over half term they held a Netflix party where children from the Presentation N.S. & Scoil Mhuire Boy’s N.S. watched a film together from the safety of their own homes, also they held a couple of competition’s, firstly a colouring competition and then a fancy dress competition.  Below are some of the winners.  Thank you to everyone who entered, it was really hard picking the winners and we wish we could have shared all the entries as they were wonderful and scary.  Also thank you to both schools and everyone who helped.

“Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103

We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s programme – 15th Nov. 2020 at 7pm on C103.  (S.R.)

On this week’s ‘Where The Road Takes Me’,  John Greene puts the finishing touches to ‘The Christy Ring Story’, continuing and concluding with the final part, in what was a two part programme.

Just like the death of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, most people also remember where they were when news of Christy Ring’s death broke.  Contributors to the programme recall how they received the sad and tragic news………

And…..

Mr. Sherif Sultan, a professor of vascular surgery based at the Galway Clinic, looks at some of the possibles, as to why a seemingly fit, strong and healthy man, who never smoked or drank,  suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at the age of 58.  [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

Historian and Author, Jack Lane at Millstreet Museum in 1998.

Geraldine Goggin with one of the two hugely important Millstreet Posters which she has kindly presented to Millstreet Museum in memory of the late Michael and Matthew Murphy.
We believe the year of this magnificent Poster is either 1960 or 1965. Perhaps someone who attended the historic occasion at the “Star” Ballroom might confirm the correct year.
A wonderful “West End Cinema” Poster from 1973 which was the year that the Cinema closed. For years we were hoping to acquire for Millstreet Museum one of these precious Posters. Earlier Posters were narrower. If anyone finds such Posters we would be so very glad to make a copy of such Posters for archival purposes.   Many thanks to Geraldine Goggin for this great Poster.

Mark Keane’s truly amazing winning goal for Cork on Sunday.

Eily’s Report – 10th November

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my weekly report.

What a difference a goal can make. I’m sure you know by now that my knowledge of football or any competitive game is almost nil. My many interests are elsewhere. But I cannot fail to be  overjoyed, proud  and plain delighted at the lift which that winning shot scored by Mark Keane, for Cork at the  very last minute on Saturday  evening gave to every red blooded Cork person in every corner of the world. Where else would you get such a return for a kick of a ball that put Kerry out of the Munster Final. Most people were forced to watch it at home for obvious reasons, the loss of companionship  and banter meant that it was a fairly noiseless event as matches go, but when that ball went in all hell broke loose. Babies and other resting folk were roused out of their sleep, peaceful dogs and cats scrambled for shelter by the explosion of screaming cheers that went up in every house. It is still almost unbelievable that Kerry will not be in the Munster Final.  The importance of sport cannot be over rated. Win, lose or draw, sport of any kind brings people together, it’s great to see youngsters getting the chance to be part of it and better still to see girls making their presence felt. Even those who have no competitive skills have have a part to play. Looking back I can recall a some lads who did no more than mind the coats for the players, or the water and they were made part of the whole and  made just  as important as the players themselves. On winning day they were fitted into the group photo to go down in history with the rest.    As I said at the outset, I know very little about sport, I could never watch a match, if my side were losing it would be all too much for me.  But I’d always want to know who won when all was over. I had a friend like that, she would go off out during the play and on her return ask the husband who won. One day when she came back and asked him who won, he said he didn’t watch it at all and she said didn’t you know I’d want to know  who won, he said yes and if your side lost you’d give out to me.  When your side wins  you’re as happy as them all. Well done Cork.

“Aghinagh’s Vincent Coakley” by Francis Duggan

Poet supreme, Francis Duggan  composed this very special poem some time ago remembering Vincent Coakley.    Vincent went to his Eternal Reward during this past week.  R.I.P.. We thank Con Meade for alerting us to this truly superb poem. (S.R.)

A tall and classy Gaelic footballer the midfielder complete
Aghinagh’s Vincent Coakley played for Aghinagh and Cork and Millstreet
He and Kippagh’s Con O’Connor the best midfielders in Cork at their best
Were never found to be wanting when put to the test

Though this is going back some three decades in time
I remember Vincent Coakley in his physical prime
For Millstreet he gave many a memorable display
Perhaps in his dark hair there is gray today

Beyond Aghinagh he is one widely known
The Millstreet fans did claim Vincent for their own
And why not they for he was a fine sporting player
Not many at his best who with him could hope to compare

On Sundays in Summer in Seasons long gone
In Cork County Championship games in Coachford and Macroom we cheered Millstreet on
Though down on the scoreboard the Finnowsiders were fighting back
With O’Connor and Coakley at midfield sending them to attack
