Brian’s Magnificent “Guns ‘n Roses” Memorabilia Collection

Millstreet’s Brian O’Leary recently shared part of his truly amazing “Guns ‘n Roses” memorabilia collection display. For decades Brian (who is such an accomplished Artist) has been collecting what must now be one of the world’s most complete collections of items associated with the world famous Band. Brian’s interest began decades ago and he attributes such an absorbing interest as being of great importance to him as he bravely coped with health procedures for many years.   “Guns ‘n Roses” appear at Slane this weekend and we sincerely hope that the great Band become aware of this magnificent Fan and that they will arrange to meet with Brian considering that he must be one of their most ardent and most loyal Fan ever.   We wish all attending this weekend’s Concert every enjoyment and safety.  Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Audio: Boil Water Notice and Millstreet Ambulance discussed on Cork Today

Millstreet news items were the topic of conversation when Cllr. John Paul O’Shea spoke to Patricia Messenger on the C103’s CorkToday, this morning. Two different topics were discussed (listen to them above):

  • The boil water notice for tap water in Millstreet, and communication issues with Irish Water (from 22:00 to 30:30), and
  • the removal of the ambulance service from the Millstreet area since last Wednesday which was done with no prior notice, and no consultation with anyone (from 30:30 to 37:00)

More on the Millstreet Ambulance: The Millstreet ambulance was originally withdrawn over two years ago, and reinstated temporarily 15 months ago after public pressure, and only a day service at that (8am to 8pm).

Eily’s Report – 23rd May

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to my weekly report.

Another warm spell is on the way and get ready to avail of the lovely sunny days ahead. At the same time be careful with the use of our local water system. It came as a great shock during the week to be told that it is polluted and  we were warned to boil  it before use. A new purifying system is to be installed and we sincerely hope that it wont be long before we can let down our guard and put this worrying  time behind us.

Meanwhile life goes on in our community and we have lots of lovely events to look foreward to. Next Sunday May 28th will see the Grand opening of our newly extended Day Care Centre  on the Clara road at 2pm.  Everybody is invited to come and see  what this wonderful facility has to offer, especially  the elderly people of our community. There will be bouncing castles, facepainting, light refreshments plus a grand tour of the whole place.

I Loved Claraghatlea Then

The Winters were cold and windy and wet
And the fields often gray with frost something i remember yet
And cattle in the farmyard sheds often bellowing for silage or hay
In the place i was raised in from here far away

But i loved Claraghatlea then and i always will
That green old Town-land in view of Clara Hill
Where i would be a stranger to many today
But love of place until death with me will stay

Cork v Tipp: Good luck Mark

A few short years ago we were thrilled when Mark Ellis became the first Millstreet hurler on the Cork Senior Hurling team. Now in command of the centre back spot he is one of the senior players on the team, much is expected of him and others as Cork take on Tipperary today with a host of new players.

Cork beat Tipp in the league earlier in the year, but Tipp are smarting a big defeat in the league final. Expect Mark to drop back in front of his full back to help prevent goals, but it won’t be easy for Cork today against the All Ireland champions.

Munster SHC quarter-final: Tipperary v Cork, Semple Stadium, 4pm. There will be live coverage of the game on RTÉ2 (TV), RTE Radio, C103, Radio na Gaeltachta with updates on Cork’s 96FM, Red FM, Cork GAA website and Twitter page, but nothing beats being there!

Result: Tipperary 1-16 Cork 2-27 🙂 A great game, and Mark played a blinder also. see more below:  [read more …] “Cork v Tipp: Good luck Mark”

“Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm Today on C103

We thank John Greene for the much appreciated advance information on his Radio Documentary this week.  “Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm Today (Sunday, 21st May 2017) on C103 is presented by John.  (S.R.)

Lough Hyne is Irelands first Marine Nature Reserve and one of the most beautiful spots in the country. It’s situated 5 kilometres South-West of Skibbereen, just off the Skibbereen Baltimore road.

The marine lake is connected to the Atlantic Ocean via Barlogue Creek by a narrow channel known as the rapids. The area is a scientists paradise, steeped in history and with more folklore than you can imagine. Its history though is at times tragic, as half the population here died during the famine. Also, Fineen O’Driscoll, the last great O’Driscoll chieftain spent his final days here, destitute and alone in his island castle in the centre of Lough Hyne.
