Last weekends Stonethrowers Rally in Tipperary produced some great results for the local crews that made the trip to Clonmel to compete in the one day Event which was the fourth Round of the very Competitive National Championship. T|he Event comprised of a 3×3 Stage format resulting in 9 very challenging Stages laid on by Tipperary Motor Club. There was success for Millstreet’s Sean Moynihan /MacKierans in their Ford Escort Mark 2 who came out on top of the Class 12 Results after leading the Class from the very first stage of the day, while another Local Crew in the form of Colin Philpott/Declan Casey competing in a Suzuki Swift emerged victorious in Class 23,while Derry Long swapped from the driving seat over to the Navigators Seat for this Event and guided Colin Roche in his Toyota Starlet to 1st in Class 11R, the Rally was won by Josh Moffett from Monaghan in a Ford Fiesta WRC who was in turn followed home by Donegal Man Declan Boyle in a similar Car with Moffett having a winning margin of just 7 Seconds after a hard days competition. Roy White was the top Tipperary competitor and he went on to finish 3rd overall also aboard a Fiesta WRC with Dromtarriffe Man James O`Brien as usual occupying the Co-Drivers Seat for White, so another good weekend was had for all the local Competitors who were competing in Clonmel. Round 5 of the National Championship will take place in Sligo on next Sunday August 19th.

Local Rally Competitors Derry Long along with his Co-Driver Declan Casey who both hail from Kilcorney competed in the hotly contested Junior Category of the Donegal Rally over the weekend, the Crew were competing in a Honda Civic and at the end of the Event they finished a very strong 6th overall and 3rd in Class, there was some strong competition in the Junior Rally and this result now puts Derry Long into second place in the Junior Section of the Irish Tarmac Championship which he is contesting, the result is all the more creditable given that this was the first time the Crew made the long Journey to Donegal for to compete in the Rally which for Junior Competitors comprised of 3 tough challenging Stages repeated twice which included the famous Fanad Head and Atlantic Drive Tests on the final day of the 3 day Event on Sunday, the Junior Section was won by Jason Black in a Toyota Starlet who pushed Jordan Hone in an Opel Adam into 2nd place by just 1.9 seconds at the end, other local interest was in the form of Ballydaly Man Liam Moynihan who was co-driving for Desi Henry in an R5 Skoda, they were running strongly in the early stages of the Main Rally but had to retire due to a Technical Problem, the Rally was won by Donegals Manus Kelly for the 3rd year Running in a Subaru Impreza WRC who was followed home by Sam Moffett in 2nd place in his R5 Fiesta who finished ahead of his Brother Josh Moffett in 3rd place in a similar Car,this result means that Josh Moffett retains the overall lead in the Tarmac Championship.(Photos by Alan Noonan and Declan Casey)
There was success for 2 local Crews last weekend at the Killarney International Rally of the Lakes which was the 3rd Round of the Irish Tarmac Championship,Sean Moynihan driving his Ford Escort Mk2 co-driven by Liam Brennan came out on top of Class 12 and finished in 9th place overall in the National Rally, this was a repeat performance from the Crew when they achieved an identical result 12 months ago on the 2017 Event, there was also success for Denis O`Brien co-driven by Michael O`Riordan in there Opel Corsa who had a great Rally and at the end of the 2 day Event they had a convincing win in Class 10 and like Sean Moynihan this was also a repeat of there success on this Rally having also won Class 10 on the Event 12 months ago,Derry Long/Denny O`Riordan had a great Run in the Junior Rally to finish 8th overall and 5th in Class while Pat Sheehan in his Renault Clio had had no luck this time and retired after 6 Stages while performing strongly in his Class,Victory went to Donegals Manus Kelly in a Subaru Impreza WRC with Robert Barrable finishing behind in 2nd place in his Ford Fiesta R5 with Desi Henry who was co-driven by Ballydaly Man Liam Moynihan finishing in a fine 3rd place overall in there Skoda Fabia R5,the Rally was held in mostly favourable Weather Conditions over the 2 days and used some famous Stages like Molls Gap,Healy Pass and Caragh Lake. Last weekends West Cork Rally produced some great results for some of our local crews that made the trip to Clonakilty to compete in what was a very tough and challenging Event, there was Success for Mike P Kelleher/Eoghan McCarthy who emerged victorious in Class 10 in there Mark2 Escort, there were also some great performances from other local Crews including Darren Cremin/Liam Dennehy who finished 2nd in Class 11F, Denis O`Brien/Ryan O`Brien Opel Corsa who finished 4th in Class 10 who in turn were followed home by Kevin Hickey/Derry Healy in there Ford Escort with 5th in Class 10, and Denis Buckley/Jason Buckley who finished 7th in Class 10,unfortunately there was no luck for Don Moynihan/Kevin Murphy Ford Escort who were back after a long lay off from the Sport but retired with Mechanical Woes on Sunday while luck also deserted Derry Collins/Stephen Collins in there Class 9 Vauxhall Nova, and Derry Long/John Joe Williams in the Junior Section who both failed to make the finish, also local Co-Driver Declan Casey was calling the notes for Cavan Man Kevin Cole in a Ford Escort but luck also deserted them when they retired on Sunday with Mechanical Problems. The Event was won by Donagh Kelly/Conor Foley in there Ford Focus WRC who took a record breaking fifth consecutive victory, Josh Moffett/Andy Hayes Ford Fiesta were second overall and won the hotly contested R5 catagory,Gary Kiernan/Ryan Moore in there Proton won the National Section,Owen Murphy won the Historic section in his Talbot Sunbeam and Gary McNamee in his Honda Civic was the top Junior Competitor.Frequent changeable weather during the Event made for very challenging driving conditions with very Cold Conditions and even some Snow making the going quite interesting but as always Cork Motor Club led by Greg McCarthy and his hard working Team which included Danny Creedon/Michael O`Riordan Subaru and Conor Falvey Porsche performing 00 Sweeper Duties along the Route Ran a Top Class Rally which was enjoyed by both Competitors and Spectators alike.

The recent Cork 20 Rally produced mixed results for some of our local crews that made the short trip to Macroom which is now the new Home for the Rally to compete in what was a very tough and challenging Event, Saturdays stages were in the Kilmichael, Inchigeela and Kilnamartyra areas while the stages on Sunday were more Local to Millstreet with the Butter Road, Mushera and Mullaghanish stages all being used, the weather was sometimes very mixed particularly on the Saturday Morning loop and this made driving conditions quite challenging for all the Crews which as a result brought quite a few retirements along the way, from a Millstreet point of view there was a good battle in Class 10 with only just over 18 sec covering the top 3 Crews in the Class with Bandons Victor Beamish in an Vauxhall Nova topping the Class with our local crews filling the next 4 places with Denis O`Brien/Ryan O`Brien Opel Corsa finishing just 14.7 sec behind while 3rd in the Class were Kevin Hickey/Derry Healy Ford Escort Mark 1 a further 4 seconds back, rounding off the Top 5 in Class 10 were Sean Moylan/Denny O`Riordan in a Peugeot 306 who were followed home in 5th by Mike P Kelleher/Iarla McCarthy in there Mark 2 Escort,Sean Moynihan/Liam Brennan in another Mark 2 Escort took 3rd in Class 12 and as a result are Class 12 Champions in both the Irish Tarmac Championship and also in the Southern 4 Rally Championship as well in what has been a remarkable year for the talented Young Man from Millstreet,Todd Falvey/Andrew Cronin in there Porsche 911 were 3rd overall in the Historic Section and finished first in Class C1 while John Murphy/ Eoghan McCarthy finished 5th in Class 20 with there Subaru Impreza, unfortunately there was no luck for Dan Kelleher/Gavin Downey Ford Escort Mark 2,Denis Buckley/Declan Casey Ford Escort Mark 2 and John O`Sullivan/Derry Long Ford Fiesta who all failed to finish what was a very tough Rally. The Event was won by Sam Moffett in his Ford Fiesta who by just starting the Rally finished off a remarkable year by winning the Irish Tarmac Championship to add to his National Tarmac and Forestry Titles he already has under his belt as well from the 2017 Season, while Josh Moffett Ford Fiesta crashed out on the last stage while fighting for the lead with his older Brother which left Alastair Fisher in his Fiesta finishing in the runner up spot while Kevin Eves co-driven by Macroom Man William Lynch won the National Rally in his Toyota Corolla and also the Tarmac Championship Title in the National Section as well in the process,Keith McIvor won the Historic section in his Ford Escort while Jenna McCann was the top Junior Competitor and as a result clinched the Junior Tarmac Championship in Cork,Munster Motor Club led by Paul Browne and his hard working Team laid on a very challenging Route with top class stages used that provided tough driving conditions which were enjoyed by both Competitors and Spectators alike, out of the 104 Crews listed to start the Event 63 Crews made it back to the finish on Sunday Evening in Macroom.
