Greyhounds: Ballydaly United came third in the Connolly’s RED MILLS Produce Stakes Round 1 Heat 3 (Grade : A0) Flat 525. After a brutal start, he stayed on strongly and gained a lot of ground to take third place three lengths adrift. [see video below]

Athletics: The annual Clara Mountain Run organised by the Irish Mountain Running Association will be held this coming Sunday at 7pm. Registration at the GAA Hall. [Full details on the IMRA website]

Rallying: Charlie Drake had a tough weekend at the ARC Quit Forest Rally over the weekend, lost six minutes with a puncture, a major oil leak, and rear brakes that weren’t working properly conspired to push him down the field.[see the 5 rally videos below]

Athletics: In the Cork BHAA UCC 10k road race (Sun 1st Apr 2012), two Millstreet runners were running for their employers. Out of a field of 513,  Donal Coffey running for Pilz finished in 8th position in a time of 34:01, and Tony Kelleher, running for the CSO finished in 27th in a time of 36:44. GAA Scór: A huge congratulations to the Millstreet GAA Novelty Act who won the Munster Scór Sinsir final in Tempelmore last Saturday night. They will compete in the All-Ireland Final on April 23rd in the INEC in Killarney. Commiserations to the Millstreet GAA Quiz team who came second on the night, and also to John O’Sullivan from St.Johns GAA Club who failed to progress in the recitation.

On Friday March 16th Millstreet Juvenile Club held a table quiz for juveniles between the ages of 9 to 16 . With 25 tables of 4 we were delighted with the turn out. Winners on the night included teams from Kiskeam Knocknagree and Millstreet. Prizes ranged fromLifestyle Sport vouchers to Easter eggs. A special thanks to the sponsors of the night: Super Valu,Centra, The Kelts[Connie and Tom] and Michael Smyth [school of motoring]. Also a huge thanks to the club committe members for all their help  Ciara Hickey, her mom Cris, Kathleen and Connie Linehan,  Muriel Cronin, Carmel Walsh, Niall Buckley, Willie Kiely and our Chairman Joe O Connor. Soccer: County Cup 3rd Round:  Millstreet Celtic 0 Leeside B 2

Greyhounds: Alto Belli, won the third race in Curraheen Park on Thursday night (16th March), is owned and trained by Thomas & Finbarr O’Leary from the Drishane Road. A 330 race, he won by a shoulder in a time of 17:98, despite coming from behind and taking the long way around the bend [video at the bottom]

Edward J Murphy’s Dog Ballydaly United won the A2/A3 Stake semi-final in Clonmel last night (18th March). A 525 in a time of 28.87 by 4 lengths [video below]

Rallying: The West Cork Rally was on over the weekend. Locals taking part were:  John Murphy (Tullig)/Conor O’Flynn 17F in their Escort Mark II (#H09) finished 4th in the historics;  and John O’Sullivan/Denny O’Riordan in their Toyota Corolla (#0130), retired after stage 11. Kevin Crowley was today presented with the 96FM/C03 GAA Sports Star of the Month award for February in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel.

Kevin, from the Millstreet GAA club, was a key member of the Cork Vocational Schools’ senior football team that won the All-Ireland senior title recently, defeating champions Donegal in the final. He also won a Munster Championship with his school, Coláiste Treasa Kanturk, and is a member of the Cork minor football panel.

Horse Racing: Andrias Guerin won his first race over hurdles in the GROLSCH HCP CHASE  5500m at Wincanton (GBR) (3:10pm) on Hobb’s Dream last Friday March 9th. He spent the whole race at the back of the field, made his move with four fences to go, jumped the last in second (photo right), and just pipped it by a head. “Fabulous ride Andrias Guerin” – the commentator [See the video of the race at the bottom of this post] [read an article in the SportingLife.com]

He followed that up the following day with his second win over hurdles in the 5:25 at Chepstow (UK), a 2m 4f race, winning by half a length on “Meet me at Dawn”, sent off at 8/1. He rides again today in the 4:30 at Plumpton, another hurdle … three in a row, what are the chances … [not to be as he was raised 9lbs since his race on friday and fell two from home ... breaking Andrias' collar bone :( ]

• All-Ireland Vocs Schools Junior Football Semi-Final (U16): Boherbue Comp 2-07 Virginia Coll Cavan 1-07.  Paul Sheehan & Ryan Tarrant on the Boher team march on to the final, where they will play Coláiste Cnoc Mhuire Granard (Co.Longford) who beat An Ceathru Rua (Galway) by 2-15 to 0-6. (March 10th). The Final is Saturday next, St. Patrick’s Day, at a venue yet to be confirmed (1pm).

Greyhounds: Edward Murphy’s dog Ballydaly United finished second in a 525 in Clonmel in a time of 29.09  (11th March). Last out of the traps, he was passed all but one down the back straight, but went wide around the last bend and probably ran out of steam.  [race video below]
Brendan O’Shea’s Dog Crossfield Queen got her first win in The Cork GOBA N2-N3 Unraced Stake Final (525) at Curraheen Park on Saturday evening, by six lengths in very good time of 28.77, and took home the big money for the night. [race video below]

With Best of luck to Millstreet and St.Johns GAA Clubs who are taking part in the Munster Scór Sinsir semi-finals in Tallow, Co. Waterford tonight, after they all won Cork County titles two weeks ago in Ovens. Millstreet GAA are represented in the Novelty Act by Stephen O’Riordan, Niamh O’Mahony, James Kelleher, and Rebecca Enright in a hilarious sketch as the Queen tries to land at Cork Airport (photo above left). John Tarrant, Pat Sheehan, and Jerry Doody represent Millstreet GAA in the Question Time, while John O’Sullivan (photo above right) represents St.Johns in the recitation.

Boxing: Seán Óg O’Connor (boxing for Rylane Boxing Club) lost his All-Ireland Boys ’4′ 52Kg Quarter-Final to Conor Burns of the Holy Trinity Boxing Club (Belfast) on a points total of 13-6

Rallying: Charlie Drake was competing in the round 1 of the Australian Rally Championship – Rally Calder. On the first day (Friday) he was ‎1.8 seconds off 3rd, and 17 seconds off the overall lead heading into last stage of the day, where he broke gear linkage in 5th, had some flames from the car, and had to retire :( [see videos of Charlie driving at the 2012 ECB Rally Calder at the bottom of this post]

Between now and the 7th April there will be a daily token printed on page 2 of the Irish Independent/ Sunday Independent. Simply cut out these tokens and give them to any member of our committee.
