“A Rebel’s Cry” – Cork All-Ireland Song by “Loose Connection”

The superby talented Duhallow based “Loose Connection” Band have just released a truly fantastic song entitled “A Rebel’s Cry” in honour of Cork’s All-Ireland Football Championship Match with Down at Croke Park on Sunday, 19th September 2010. This is a splendidly lively and hugely appropriate song with Seán Moylan as main vocalist. It is performed with mighty enthusiasm by the very popular Band. Hopefully it could very well feature on RTE’s “Up for the Match”. Judge for yourself as you can now view the excellent video and hear the brilliant song. Best of luck to Mark Ellis who will play left half back in the Cork Intermediate Hurling team to play Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Final on Saturday (28th August 2010) at 7pm in Thurles.

The banter has been good ahead of the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park today. We’ve a few Jackeens in our midst, and the Dublin flag in the picture above has been lucky to stay in flying for the last few days. There’s a big crowd gone up to Croker for the day, the anticipation is building and the action gets under way in the next few hours time. May the best team win, and may that team be Cork!!

Final score Dublin 1-14 Cork 1-15. Victory for Cork, TBTG . The final is on September 19th.

Beaten by Dromtarriffe

Millstreet Junior Footballers were beaten by Dromtarriffe in the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship tonight in Cullen. Drom’ will hardly ever have a better scoring day, as nearly everything they kicked went over the bar, while most of the Millstreet Kicks ended up either wide or in the goalies arms, in what was a very frustrating evening of football for the Millstreet supporters.

Tadgh Collins got Millstreet off to a great start with a goal in the first few minutes, but Dromtarriffe came back and scored four points to level things up at 1-1 to four points, before a the Dromtarriffe goalie dropped a high ball and left the Millstreet forward with an easy tap in for their second goal. But Drom went quickly up the pitch and got a spare man inside to tuck away a goal. Millstreet tagged on another point before the half, to lead by 2-2 to 1-4 at the break.

At half time the wind direction changed from being across the pitch to being nearly straight down the pitch towards the village, in the favour of Dromtarriffe. They used it well in the second half, playing long accurate balls to their forwards who seemed to score every time they touched the ball from all sorts of angles.

Millstreet never got to grips with the breaking ball in the middle of the field, and once again did not seem to be able for battling in the tight. That breaking ball was the platform that Dromtarriffe used to put over point after point and ultimately kill the match. Millstreet seemed to give the ball away all too easily once they got up the pitch, and their attacks were slow which allowed the Dromtarriffe backs to organised and stop any danger.

To their credit, Millstreet battled away and missed 3-4 goal chances in the last few minutes, hitting the post twice, but it was all too late at that stage as the game finished up with a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-5.

The Iron Man of Millstreet as Michael O Hehir used to say
One who was quite fearless on the field of play.

A likeable character in every way
And as strong as a horse till the years left him slower and gray
For a big man quick on his feet and a marvellous full back
One who often turned defence into attack.

Amongst the departed his last remains do lay
But the legend lives on of the great man today
In gaelic playing parks around Ireland he earned his Renown
And he became famous far from Millstreet Town.

The great Humphrey Kelleher his type are quite rare
In his prime years few with him could hope to compare
The Cork and Millstreet jersey with pride he did wear
But there was far more to the man than being a great football player.

Cork Cruise through

It’s been a good weekend for Cork football fans in Croke Park. The seniors pulled away in the second half to beat Roscommon by 1-16 to 0-10, and now face Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final in three weeks time. While earlier in the day, the minors scored a goal in the last kick of the game to beat Armagh by 3-11 to 0-19.
Millstreet were represented in Croke Park by the Comhaltas Group who provided the musical entertainment at half time in the Cork game (see the pic on the right), just as they did for the National League Final back in April.
But us Cork fans will be very happy that Kerry were dethroned yesterday by Down, and that we won’t have to try to beat them in Croker … that and the face that we won’t have to listen to the Kerry boys and girls for the Summer either
