Following 6.30 p.m. Mass at St. Patrick's Church, Millstreet this New Year's Eve, Millstreet Pipe Band welcomed in the New Year as it has for many years by giving a most enjoyable musical recital on the Church Grounds which was much appreciated by the many people who had been attending Mass. Over the past six decades, Millstreet Pipe Band have performed the width and breadth of Munster and further afield, having commenced from humble beginnings in 1951 in the Minor Row Hall.

Their predecessors in town included a brass band, founded in 1881 by a German, Jackabo Wytz. A series of other bands followed over the next number of decades. but their lifespans were short before the seeds of the Millstreet Pipe Band were sown.

It certainly was a wonderful night to remember at the Dromhall Hotel in Killarney on Saturday, 26th March 2011 when Millstreet Pipe Band celebrated its 60th Anniversary in a truly grand style.   The occasion was superbly co-ordinated by various members of the renowned Band.   Marie Twomey had prepared a magnificent audio-visual presentation on the history of the famous Band.    Here we invite you to view a selection of images we took on the splendid occasion when excellent speeches were made by Tim O’Shea, Brendan O’Sullivan and Liam Coffey while John Hickey and Marie Twomey acted as marvellous MCs and called upon the various Band Members to accept a very beautiful memento of Artwork on Slate (created by Kate O’Keeffe).   Eily Buckley and Margaret Bourke made a presentation on behalf of Millstreet Community Council.    ”The Kelt” (Connie Linehan, Tom Flahive & Pat Bucke) provided a fantastic  night of wonderful music and dance.  Fr. Paddy O’Byrne and Fr. John Fitzgerald, P.P. said Grace before and after the delicious meal.   John Tarrant covered for the Press while Brendan Murphy recorded for LTV2.  Definitely a night to remember.   Sincere Congratulations to Millstreet Pipe Band and every success in the years ahead.     You have always brought such a wonderful sense of occasion to so many varied and historic events.  (S.R.)

Liam Coffey & Tim O'Shea cut the special Millstreet Pipe Band 60th Anniversary Cake at the hugely successful Function held at the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney on Saturday, 26th March 2011. Tim and Liam are the two longest serving members of the renowned Band. Lots more pictures to follow later.

This Patrick’s Day marks 60 years playing in the Millstreet St.Patricks Day Parade, and that 60 years is a huge achievement because it is 60 years of unbroken service, the kind of which is rarely seen these days.

There are two members of the first Se.Patricks Day Parade still playing in the band for the 60th Parade this year. Is this a record, for 60 years of unbroken service?

What a truly magnificent record for Millstreet Pipe Band which today led the Millstreet St. Patrick's Day Parade for the amazing 60th time! Sincere congratulations from everyone with special mention to Tim O'Shea and Liam Coffey who have been with the renowned Band all through those six decades!

The Kennelly Archive represents a lifetime of work by Padraig Kennelly and his wife Joan, bore out of a passion for photography, that has culminated in an in-depth pictorial record of Co. Kerry. They have now digitized the negatives of the photography which appear on their website kennedyarchives.com.

Fortunately, he visited Millstreet a few times in the late 50s and 60s, attend a dance in the Star Ballroom, The Pipe Band Festival of 1958 and a few more visits. In total there are 143 photos in the collection which were taken in Millstreet, and amongst them some wonderful photos of people from the time. Many are still with us, some are no longer

May 1960 – A dance at the Star Ballroom in Millstreet – (94 photos) – “oh, the style, the style.”

May 1958 – The Pipe Band Festival (35 photos). As a part of The Tostal, organised to try and revive the Irish Language at the time, with different competitions held around the country.

August 3rd 1966 – A lorry full of bricks crashed into a house at the Bridge in Millstreet. (6 photos). Pat O’Mahony’s house of the time.

20th February 1966; The Padraig Pearse Harp, from his School, St Enda’s, which was presented to Drishane Convent, Millstreet. (3 photos)
