There are interviews with the late Ken Brennan and Sgt. Seán O’Sullivan, as well as clips from around town. Click here to watch the video. Also below are some images from the video, with lots of locals recognisable:

The Irish Independent notes today that in 2016, Millstreet had the second highest reliance on the manufacturing industry as an employer in the country:
“… some towns are heavily reliant on just one industry. For example, in seven towns, more than 25pc of the workforce were employed in manufacturing in April 2016 – they include Ballyhaunis, in Co Mayo, where 41.88pc of workers are in the sector, followed by Millstreet, in Co Cork, at 33.92pc…”
From a community perspective, you’d prefer a broader spread of the workforce across industries, because in our case we may be too exposed to a shock to the manufacturing sector. At the same time we’re glad to have Alps, Munster Joinery, and the other smaller manufacturers in the area for the jobs they bring.

“We’re sorry to say that ‘Murphy’s Furniture’ will cease trading in the coming weeks.
After 50 years of trading in the West End, it is with heavy hearts that we made this decision. We are very grateful for the valuable support we have enjoyed over the decades from you, all of our customers, suppliers, and business counterparts. We have greatly enjoyed being part of this network, which has been a happy and rewarding experience for us. We’ll try to thank as many of you as we can in person over the coming months.
Our thanks go in particular to our most trusted, loyal, and hard-working employee and friend, Petra Dietz. Since joining us over three years ago, Petra has brought her enthusiasm and positive disposition to our business.
However, times change, and other interests beckon. As a family we wish to start another tradition, delving into the work of full time farming and breeding pedigree Angus cattle which we’ve been doing on a part-time basis for the past few years.
Our closing down sale will start on Tuesday 5th June. Please continue to check out our website, murphysfurniture.ie, and our facebook page for all of our offerings. We look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks.
While we are sad to be going, it is good to have been here.”
Recent objections to the Energy Storage Facility in Ballydesmond has been making headlines in the news, but few realise that there is a much larger one planned for Caherdowney, which has been in for planning since this January.
Battery storage compounds capture surplus energy from wind farms during times of excess energy (high winds, nighttime) and release it back into the power grid during times of peak consumption.
The planning states: “a battery energy storage facility which will comprise of rechargeable battery units contained within up to 39 no. 40 foot containers on site and the associated development of unit substations, a 110kV substation, security fencing, security cameras, lightning mast, new site roads and the upgrading of the existing vehicular access. The facility will connect into the adjoining Ballyvouskill ESB substation via underground cable. All associated site development, landscaping and boundary treatment works above and below ground.” [read more …] ” 39 battery storage compounds planned for Caherdowney”
