The Good News on this rather dull Tuesday morning is that Millstreet won a Bronze medal in D category of the National Tidy Towns Competition.  And moved up a further four points to reach 291. Our Town was described as being vibrant and an exciting place to visit. Referring to our newly developed walks they said that few towns have used their natural resources to such good advantage as we have.

Accolades came flowing into Millstreet over weekend in many forms. Our
brilliant  Camogie team won the under 14 Blitz against stiff opposition  by
just one point. While our musicians and dancers brought all Ireland awards
from the Fleadh in Cavin. Chloe Buicke was part of the Boherbue team who
won the dancing and the renowned Linehan’s, Donal coming first on melodeon
and second on the Box, and Conor 2nd in the senior accompaniment guitar.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1077 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this damp but mild Tuesday morning.

Well our Millstreet Summer Horse Show is over and we can clock up yet
another outstanding event in the history of the renowned Green Glens
Complex. There was no mention of the Celtic Tiger, no shortage of entries
and even no shortage of fine weather. On opening day there was a massive
8,000 entries on the books with many more re-entering during the week.

Our Show came fast on the heels of the Dublin Show and the comparisons were
staggering. Stabling alone here was little more than half the cost while
parking of horse boxes which cost €1800 in Dublin were free of charge
here, the list goes on. And prize money just couldn’t be compared. One
man told me he won a competition in Dublin for which he got €150 , a
similar one here was â, €6,000.   Admission was free throughout the five
days and people and families came and enjoyed it all to the full. As well
as the Cian O Connors and Francis Connors and other famous riders who
continue to grace our show.

This is the second week in August and its Showtime in Millstreet . The
five-day Summer Horse show kicks off here on to-morrow  Wednesday the 10th
at the mighty Green Glens Complex. Many new features have been added to the
show-jumping arenas, and the big news is that Noel C has won his long
battle with the Show-jumping Society of Ireland and as a result, they have
suspended the rules which banned members from attending non-affiliated
shows, this  created much furore last year.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1074 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely calm warm Tuesday morning.

The pleasant weather over the weekend gave people of all ages a welcome chance to enjoy the great out of doors. The annual vintage and old time threshing day in Cullen was an outstanding success. Their varied program ensured that there was something there for everyone.

So well done once again to the wonderful Special Needs Association.

In turn they want to thank all those who supported them and helped in any way with their latest fundraiser. The LTV crew were there to record it for your viewing when programs resume in the fall.

Large crowds strolled in the Country Park, while others took on some of our new loop walks.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to news report 1073 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this calm and cloudy Tuesday morning.

Fundraising reached an all-time high here at the weekend when no less than three events were held for the same worthy cause. The late Jerry O Leary fundraising efforts in aid of the Oncology Department of the Cork Universary Hospital opened on Saturday with a coffee morning at the home of his wife Teresa  and her little boy in Rathcoole. Then on Saturday night a monster auction and raffle was held at the Clara Inn with items realising huge prices. This was followed on Sunday afternoon by a monster Vintage run which took off from Drishane Castle. All events only went to show the  high esteem at which trucker, Jerry was  held. A truly outstanding tribute in these recessional times.

I mentioned last week that the Forgotten Maggies would be screened on TG4 tomorrow night,  Wednesday, July 20th  at 9.30 and now I’m reminding you again. Please don’t miss this the Irish Premier of the story of the Laundry Girls and women who suffered so much in silence until their story was told to our own Stephen O Riordan, who Directed and produced the film.It got a standing ovation in New York, and excellent reviews from the Irish Papers as well as the Galway Festival 2009. On TG4 it will be transmitted in English. Starting to-morrow Wednesday night at 9.30.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir  a cairde and welcome to news report 1067 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best .and it’s great to be back with you following my three weeks break. A million thanks to dear Sean Radley for keeping the show on the road during my absence.

Millstreet is still rocking from the wonderful party that was held at the Green Glens last night to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs. Margaret Reen. Our heartiest congratulations goes out to this most gracious of ladies. Up to ten priests helped to concelebrate Mass at the Green Glens including her first cousin , 92 yr old Fr. White who travelled all the way from the far ends of America to be with her and her family and friends for her big night. A wonderful meal was served by the Doody Family of Kingdom caterers.  And at 12 ‘o clock midnight  which marked her actual 100th birthday the crowd of over 500 family and friends gathered round to show their love and esteem for this lovely lady who has been such an icon of love and caring since coming to our town as our chemists , the late Frank Reen’s wife in the early 40s.We wish her many more years of health and Happiness in our midst. Mrs. Reen  who is a great grand mother herself, can recall speaking to her own great grand mother, who was born in 1814, thus covering a staggering 7 generations of her own family.  Look up our website for all the details.

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to News Report 1061 from Millstreet.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this lovely Tuesday morning of Easter Week,

Fine weather prevailed all during Holy Week and our Church ceremonies drew attendances like never before. Our Parish church was crowded at 9pm Holy Thursday, 3pm  Good Friday, and on Holy Saturday both for the Polish Mass in the afternoon  and the Vigil Mass at 9 that night, again on Easter Sunday the crowds came for the 11.30 Mass. And our priests held confessions at every opportunity throughout. Again they were very well attended. Parish Priest Fr. Jack FitzGerald thanked all those who helped in so many ways to make our Easter so meaningful for everyone.

Next Sunday will see the Divine Mercy Devotions in our Parish Church starting with confessions at 2.30 followed by the Chapel of Mercy at 3pm. The Novena which started on Good Friday will end that day. May 1st.

Due to the painting of the Church there will be no choir until further notice.
